The Fabelmans - Film Review [ESP|ENG]

Amo el cine, me gusta ir a las salas de cine y disfrutar de una buena historia, de sorprenderme de ver impresionantes escenas, buenas actuaciones, la música que acompaña a esas producciones, el sentir empatía por personajes sin importar si son héroes o villanos, me gusta ver cómo una historia puede ser relatada con diferentes puntos de vista, sin importar el género que la caracteriza o si es una historia de ficción o basada en la vida real y es que el cine tiene el poder de alcanzar a cualquier persona porque para los gustos de cada quien siempre hay una historia que ver. En esta publicación hago reseña en un film el cual es un homenaje al poder del cine y que es una historia de ficción basada en las tempranas vivencias de uno de los mejores directores del mundo.

I love movies, I like to go to the movie theaters and enjoy a good story, to be surprised to see impressive scenes, good performances, the music that accompanies these productions, to feel empathy for characters no matter if they are heroes or villains, I like to see how a story can be told with different points of view, regardless of the genre that characterizes it or if it is a fictional story or based on real life and is that cinema has the power to reach anyone because for the tastes of each person there is always a story to see. In this publication I review a film which is a tribute to the power of cinema and is a fictional story based on the early experiences of one of the best directors in the world.

Desde muy temprana edad he visto muchas películas dirigidas por Steven Spielberg, películas llenas de aventuras protagonizadas por maravillosos personajes en dónde la curiosidad, la necesidad de descubrimiento hace que los protagonistas tengan experiencias que va mucho más del entendimiento humano; esto lo digo porque los primeros films que vi de este director fue "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial", "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" y una de las trilogías del cine que más me gusta de ver, esas son los tres primeros films de "Indiana Jones"; a esas producciones debo nombrar a uno de mis films favoritos y es "JAW" el cual es una mezcla de terror y aventura donde el antagonista es uno de los mejores personajes del cine; nombró estás películas porque son las que fueron importantes en mi infancia y parte de mi adolescencia y me enseñaron de lo buen relator que es este director que en esta oportunidad, decide hacer un homenaje a la influencia que tuvo en su vida para tomar la decisión de dedicarse por completo al mundo del cine y por eso creó está historia en dónde enfoca sus experiencias en su infancia y adolescencia en una familia la cual decidió llamarla "The Fabelmans" y la cual todo está relatado desde el punto de vista de "Sam Fabelman" primeramente un niño y después adolescente que desde el uso de su cámara de video podrá captar momentos divertidos, tristes que le ayudarán a crecer hasta el momento de alcanzar su ansiado sueño.

From a very early age I have seen many films directed by Steven Spielberg, movies full of adventures starring wonderful characters where curiosity, the need for discovery makes the protagonists have experiences that go far beyond human understanding; I say this because the first films I saw of this director was "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial", "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" and one of the trilogies of cinema that I like to see the most, those are the first three films of "Indiana Jones"; to those productions I must name one of my favorite films and that is "JAW" which is a mixture of horror and adventure where the antagonist is one of the best characters of cinema; I name these films because they are the ones that were important in my childhood and part of my adolescence and taught me how good a storyteller is this director who in this opportunity, decides to pay tribute to the influence he had in his life to make the decision to devote himself completely to the world of cinema and therefore created this story where he focuses his experiences in his childhood and adolescence in a family which decided to call it "The Fabelmans " and which everything is told from the point of view of "Sam Fabelman" first a child and then a teenager who from the use of his video camera can capture funny moments, sad that will help him grow up to the time to achieve his long-awaited dream.

Lo importante de este film es la demostración de amor que tiene Spielberg a su profesión; sé que en esta historia presenta ficción, pero estoy completamente seguro que hay veracidad en muchas otras cosas como por ejemplo el verdadero motivo del porqué quiere ser director de cine; esto es algo que permite a Spielberg demostrar un punto de vista desde el trabajo de un joven que siempre quiere crear impacto con sus pequeñas películas, la influencia que tiene en motivar desde sus sentimientos a otros sean actores o espectadores para que sienta lo que él quiere expresar con sus historias y por supuesto eso lo logra en muchas escenas, maravillosas tomas que le dan un gran valor al film.

La historia en su es un fascinante coming of age, el relato de un joven que busca confort y a la vez conectar con otras personas desde el uso de su cámara; esto ocurre desde el primer momento dónde usa a sus pequeñas hermanas como sus primeras actrices y después un grupo de amigos que lo ayudarán en recrear historias llenas de aventuras y es que en esta historia, la obsesión que demuestra el protagonista por el cine le hace experimentar muchas cosas, como es el amor, la tristeza, la amistad, la decepción y algo muy importante, la madurez. Esta historia escrita por el mismo Spielberg y por Tony Kushner, escritor que ha trabajado con Steven en otras oportunidades; realizan un gran homenaje al cine y a la familia del director, eso es algo que me pareció genial porque se nota lo agradecido que es por todas las personas que se encontró en su camino y que de una manera u otra influyeron en su vida.

The important thing about this film is the demonstration of love that Spielberg has for his profession; I know that in this story he presents fiction, but I am completely sure that there is veracity in many other things such as the real reason why he wants to be a film director; this is something that allows Spielberg to show a point of view from the work of a young man who always wants to create impact with his small films, the influence he has in motivating from his feelings to others whether they are actors or spectators to feel what he wants to express with his stories and of course he achieves that in many scenes, wonderful shots that give a great value to the film.


The story is a fascinating coming of age, the story of a young man who seeks comfort and at the same time connect with other people from the use of his camera; this happens from the first moment where he uses his little sisters as his first actresses and then a group of friends who will help him to recreate stories full of adventures and in this story, the obsession that the protagonist shows for cinema makes him experience many things, such as love, sadness, friendship, disappointment and something very important, maturity. This story written by Spielberg himself and by Tony Kushner, a writer who has worked with Steven in other opportunities; they make a great tribute to cinema and to the director's family, that is something that I thought was great because you can see how grateful he is for all the people he met in his way and that in one way or another influenced his life.

La actuación de Michelle Williams cómo "Mitzi Fabelman", es muy buena, podrá en algún momento sentirse sobreactuado, pero creo que esa era la idea por todo lo que debe vivir ese personaje; creo que su actuación representa muy la imagen de la esposa perfecta para esa época, pero también demuestra la necesidad de la libertad y sí, en momentos la sentí como alguien egoísta aunque por como está escrito su personaje y también uno de los temas principales de la historia, el cual es el de hacer lo imposible para alcanzar los sueños. Si considero que el personaje de Mitzi es el reflejo esperado de la mujer, madre y esposa para esa época, creo que la interpretación de Paul Dano cómo "Burt Fabelman" es igual de perfecto, es el hombre que ama a sus hijos, que ama a su esposa, pero parece que ama más a su profesión y eso lo aleja de todo; es un personaje calmado, pero que por ser la cabeza de familia busca imponer sus ideas y eso hace difícil todo; a pesar de aparecer brevemente en la historia, diré que me gustó su trabajo. Con respecto a Gabriel LaBelle cómo "Sammy Fabelman", es claramente un personaje que muestra características tanto de su madre como de su padre y justamente con la relación que tiene entre ambos es donde se siente más identificado con su madre porque al final es la que siempre está presente, pero eso no evita de que ame a ambos; me pareció excelente la actuación de este joven actor porque representa muy bien lo que alguien con inteligencia, determinación y actitud puede lograr en un mundo donde en momentos la llamada "Ley del más fuerte prevalece" y es que al no contar con la fuerza y la altura, será el momento de usar otras virtudes para hacer frente a la vida; esas características le dará fuerza para sumergirse en la obsesión de crear arte y de aprender mucho más para ser considerado en algún momento como el mejor.

The performance of Michelle Williams as "Mitzi Fabelman", is very good, it may at some point feel overacted, but I think that was the idea for everything that character must live; I think her performance represents very much the image of the perfect wife for that time, but also shows the need for freedom and yes, at times I felt her as someone selfish although by the way her character is written and also one of the main themes of the story, which is to do the impossible to achieve dreams. If I consider that Mitzi's character is the expected reflection of the woman, mother and wife for that time, I think that the interpretation of Paul Dano as "Burt Fabelman" is just as perfect, he is the man who loves his children, who loves his wife, but it seems that he loves more his profession and that takes him away from everything; he is a calm character, but because he is the head of the family he seeks to impose his ideas and that makes everything difficult; in spite of appearing briefly in the story, I will say that I liked his work. Regarding Gabriel LaBelle as "Sammy Fabelman", he is clearly a character that shows characteristics of both his mother and his father and precisely with the relationship he has between them is where he feels more identified with his mother because in the end she is the one who is always present, but that does not prevent him from loving both of them; I found the performance of this young actor excellent because he represents very well what someone with intelligence, determination and attitude can achieve in a world where at times the so-called "Law of the strongest prevails" and that is that by not having the strength and height, it will be time to use other virtues to cope with life; these characteristics will give him strength to immerse himself in the obsession to create art and learn much more to be considered at some point as the best.

Si mañana o en los próximos días Steven Spielberg anuncia su retiro y The Fabelmans se convierte en su último film, personalmente no tendría ningún problema en aceptarlo; este homenaje a su madre, a su padre, su familia y amigos que le influyó a aceptar su vocación y luchar para convertirse en uno de los mejores directores en el mundo del cine es maravilloso, es divertido, conmovedor, correcto; demuestra que a pesar de tener facilidades, no hay duda de que sin el apoyo de quien lo ama y cree en él, seguramente no hubiera conseguido nada de lo que ya tiene y eso convierte a esta historia en una que espero sea otro elemento motivador para quién decida ser un futuro director, guionista, actor porque está historia demuestra la importancia y el poder de hacer cine y esto es otro factor importante del film que aparte del homenaje familiar, también demuestra lo que se puede transmitir una serie de imágenes en movimiento, que acompañada de una buena narrativa, buenas actuaciones y una música cautívente, podrá hacer que al finalizar la proyección podamos experimentar diferentes sentimientos y eso es en parte lo que significa el cine.

If tomorrow or in the next few days Steven Spielberg announces his retirement and The Fabelmans becomes his last film, I personally would have no problem accepting it; this tribute to his mother, his father, his family and friends who influenced him to accept his vocation and strive to become one of the best directors in the world of cinema is wonderful, it's funny, it's touching, it's right; It shows that despite having facilities, there is no doubt that without the support of those who love him and believe in him, surely he would not have achieved anything of what he already has and that makes this story one that I hope will be another motivating element for those who decide to be a future director, screenwriter, actor because this story demonstrates the importance and power of filmmaking and this is another important factor of the film that apart from the family tribute, it also shows what can be transmitted by a film, also demonstrates what can be transmitted by a series of moving images, accompanied by a good narrative, good performances and a cautious music, can make that at the end of the projection we can experience different feelings and that's what cinema is all about.
