Live to Game to Game to live?

I having been playing games for a long long time in my life.

  • Arcade games: Ninja Turtle, Simpson, Daytona
  • Computer CD games: Final Fantasy, Fifa,
  • Gameboys: Pokemon, Mortal Combat
  • Playing the neopets Altador tournament for 16hrs/day,
  • maplestory 6-8hrs of grinding in a location just to get 1 level up
  • Counter strike
  • Dota: custom game on Warcraft 3
  • Mobile Games

It is quite exciting to see how the gaming evolves as it moved from arcade to home console to handheld to social to online to mobile. I still can remember Nintendo said before that they would not be going into mobile gaming, but yet now we have pokemon go and Super Mario Run etc. Despite years and years of gaming revolution, they all have one thing in common: They want to make money out from the consumers/gamers. In fact, many gaming companies had been banning accounts if they realise that you are trying to make money out of their games like buying/selling ingame currencies/items/accounts through 3rd party channels etc.

However, in the recent years, changes to the gaming community had been so huge that more and more people are no longer can ignore gaming.

  1. Dota 2 started off with the grand scheme to conduct one of the 1st million dollar tournament. Suddenly, people realise that there is a possibility to be full-time gamers and has income on par with professional. Things did not stop here and more games start to offer million dollar prizes. This year, Dota 2 put up $40mil as tournament prizes. This is crazy!

In the past, maybe not being top few is not that big of a deal anyway. Haha.
  2. Youtube, Twitch and other platforms allow people to make money just by streaming their gameplay. I still remember how Pewdiepie making millions within a year. Even the "boring"(as some of you may said it, but hey, I am a fan of Othello) International Chess, Alexandra Botez was able to bring in 6-digits a year.
  3. Crypto allows the tokenize of gaming assets. With games built on the blockchain, players realise that they fully own the ingame assets. And because of that, it is no longer just transaction between the individual players and the company, but we could also transact among players. As such, blockchain gaming distribution the power of making money between players and company. And because of that, it creates a whole new mode called Play2Earn where there are people who are playing the game just to earn money.

Splinterlands is a popular Play2Earn game. For example, the developers are aware that players are hungry for new cards, so they could charge the new edition: Chao Legion Pack for as high as $20-$25 dollars per pack and there will be many people buying. Yet, they rewards the loyal players with ingame assets with airdrop vouchers and make it a need to have a voucher in order to buy 1 pack. As the voucher is an asset on the blockchain, one can easily move the voucher from ingame to 3rd party app/platforms like hive engine to sell their voucher. Currently, one voucher was sold for $18.55. So now, instead of the company earned $22.50 from the buyers, $18.50 goes to the holder of vouchers which they got it for free and only $4 goes to the company. It is quite insane to think that, it is actually possible that people are actually making more money than the company.

What a good time to be in! And I believe Play2Earn will continue to encourage more games and more players to onbard.
