Last Saturday, we decided to pick up a friend in the popular community of Los Dos Ríos in the Montes Municipality. We agreed to fill up my brother-in-law's car with gas and leave around 10:00 a.m.

El sábado pasado decidimos recoger a un amigo en la popular comunidad de Los Dos Ríos, en el municipio de Montes. Acordamos llenar el tanque del auto de mi cuñado de gasolina y salir alrededor de las 10:00 a. m.

Since we weren't in a hurry, we drove at a leisurely pace, stopping wherever we thought it would be worthwhile. Initially, we had planned to stop in Aricagua, a town with a spectacular waterfall, but the bridge collapsed during the last flood, and we couldn't cross. So, we'll have to wait for another time.

Como no teníamos prisa, condujimos tranquilamente, parando donde nos pareció interesante. Inicialmente, habíamos planeado parar en Aricagua, un pueblo con una cascada espectacular, pero el puente se derrumbó durante la última crecida y no pudimos cruzar. Así que tendremos que esperar a otra ocasión.

The town we did visit was San Lorenzo, which is just a few minutes from Cumanacoa and is known for its mountain climate, lush green landscapes, and agricultural and livestock production. From the road, we could see not only the scenery and wildlife but also the rivers and streams that flow through the town.

El pueblo que sí visitamos fue San Lorenzo, a pocos minutos de Cumanacoa, conocido por su clima de montaña, sus exuberantes paisajes verdes y su producción agrícola y ganadera. Desde la carretera, pudimos apreciar no solo el paisaje y la fauna, sino también los ríos y arroyos que atraviesan el pueblo.

Our intention was to visit the Cruz Quinal musician's house museum, but we were told it was closed. We decided to take a stroll around the main square and take some photos. Despite the time, around noon, there were children playing, people doing sports, and many people sitting and chatting.

Nuestra intención era visitar la casa-museo del músico Cruz Quinal, pero nos dijeron que estaba cerrada. Decidimos dar un paseo por la plaza principal y tomar algunas fotos. A pesar de la hora, alrededor del mediodía, había niños jugando, gente haciendo deporte y mucha gente sentada charlando.

As in most towns throughout Venezuela, the main square is Plaza Bolívar, built in honor of the father of the nation and Liberator of almost all of America, Simón Bolívar. This square is located right in the center of San Lorenzo and is the heart of the community, as it serves not only for gatherings and meetings, but also for patron saint festivals and folkloric events.

Como en la mayoría de los pueblos de Venezuela, la plaza principal es la Plaza Bolívar, construida en honor al padre de la nación y libertador de casi toda América, Simón Bolívar. Esta plaza se encuentra en pleno centro de San Lorenzo y es el corazón de la comunidad, ya que sirve no solo para reuniones y encuentros, sino también para fiestas patronales y eventos folclóricos.

Right across from Plaza Bolívar is the Church of San Lorenzo Mártir de Caranapuey, built at the end of the 18th century. This structure, although old, maintains the typical colonial facade of churches from that era. It must be said that, as happened with many of the churches in this area, the church of San Lorenzo was also burned down in 1817 to prevent the advance of the patriots in the war.

Justo enfrente de la Plaza Bolívar se encuentra la Iglesia de San Lorenzo Mártir de Caranapuey, construida a finales del siglo XVIII. Esta estructura, aunque antigua, conserva la típica fachada colonial de las iglesias de esa época. Cabe mencionar que, al igual que sucedió con muchas iglesias de esta zona, la iglesia de San Lorenzo también fue incendiada en 1817 para impedir el avance de los patriotas en la guerra.

After that, the local residents themselves took charge of remodeling it, but it was in 1990 that the government of the time undertook the important restoration and rescue of this church. However, due to the earthquake that struck Sucre state in 1997, the church suffered further damage, and the walls cracked. This church was declared a National Historic Monument in 1960.

Posteriormente, los propios residentes locales se encargaron de su remodelación, pero fue en 1990 cuando el gobierno de entonces emprendió la importante restauración y rescate de esta iglesia. Sin embargo, debido al terremoto que azotó el estado de Sucre en 1997, la iglesia sufrió más daños y sus muros se agrietaron. Esta iglesia fue declarada Monumento Histórico Nacional en 1960.

Across the street, right next to the San Lorenzo Mártir Church, are the ruins of the old San Lorenzo Mission. As with most churches built by the Capuchins, the missionaries' house was located next to this church, serving not only as a home for the friars but also as a place for the sick.

Al otro lado de la calle, justo al lado de la Iglesia de San Lorenzo Mártir, se encuentran las ruinas de la antigua Misión de San Lorenzo. Como en la mayoría de las iglesias construidas por los capuchinos, la casa de los misioneros se ubicaba junto al lado, sirviendo no solo como hogar para los frailes, sino también como lugar para los enfermos.

After spending some time in San Lorenzo, it was time to continue our journey: Los Dos Ríos awaited us. Just like the entrance, the exit was lined with lush crops and towering trees, giants swaying in the breeze, which smelled of greenery and damp earth. Without a doubt, beauty lies in the moment, and as the great poet Pessoa said: "There is enough beauty in being here and nowhere else."

Tras pasar un tiempo en San Lorenzo, era hora de continuar nuestro viaje: Los Dos Ríos nos esperaba. Al igual que la entrada, la salida estaba bordeada de exuberantes cultivos y árboles imponentes, gigantes que se mecían con la brisa, cuyo aroma perfumaba la vegetación y la tierra húmeda. Sin duda, la belleza reside en el momento, y como dijo el gran poeta Pessoa: "Hay suficiente belleza en estar aquí y no en otra parte".
