One of the things you absolutely must do if you ever have the good fortune to visit Río Caribe is to visit one of Venezuela's most beautiful, lush, and pristine beaches: Playa Medina. Recognized by experts as having a perfect marine ecosystem, it's ideal for ecotourism.

Una de las cosas que no te puedes perder si tienes la suerte de visitar Río Caribe es ir a una de las playas más hermosas, exuberantes y vírgenes de Venezuela: Playa Medina. Reconocida por los expertos por su ecosistema marino perfecto, es ideal para el ecoturismo.

If you don't have your own vehicle, no problem. You can take a pickup truck from the town of Río Caribe to the beach. The fare is less than a dollar, and they drop you off about half an hour from the beach. There, you'll find motorcycle taxis that travel to Playa Medina and Puipuy. We paid $5 per person, and they took us there and picked us up.

Si no tienes vehículo propio, no hay problema. Puedes tomar una camioneta desde Río Caribe hasta la playa. El pasaje cuesta menos de un dólar y te deja a media hora de la playa. Allí encontrarás mototaxis que van a Playa Medina y Puipuy. Nosotros pagamos $5 por persona y nos llevaron y nos recogieron.

Playa Medina is unmistakable because the entire entrance is lined with tall palm and coconut trees. Its golden sand and turquoise sea create an idyllic and wild landscape. The palm-thatched huts and food stalls, all built in the same style and with the same materials, blend perfectly into the surroundings.

Playa Medina es inconfundible, ya que toda la entrada está bordeada de altas palmeras y cocoteros. Su arena dorada y su mar turquesa crean un paisaje idílico y salvaje. Las chozas de palma y los puestos de comida, todos construidos con el mismo estilo y materiales, se integran perfectamente en el entorno.

I remember the first time I visited Playa Medina, many years ago, it was because a Spanish biologist friend told me that, as a researcher, he could vouch for the perfect marine ecosystem of Playa Medina. Years after that first visit, I can confirm that it's a perfect oasis for relaxation.

After renting a thatched-roof hut for $10 and taking several dips in the sea, which immediately recharged our batteries, we dedicated ourselves to photographing the surroundings. One of the most noticeable things about this beach is its prohibition on playing music. It's no secret that most Venezuelans like to bring sound systems and blast music, disrespecting not only the environment but also other tourists.

Tras alquilar un toldo con techo de paja por 10 dólares y darnos varios chapuzones en el mar, que nos recargaron las pilas al instante, nos dedicamos a fotografiar los alrededores. Una de las cosas más llamativas de esta playa es la prohibición de poner música. No es ningún secreto que a la mayoría de los venezolanos les gusta traer equipos de sonido y poner la música a todo volumen, faltando al respeto no solo al medio ambiente, sino también a los demás turistas.

Another thing that pleasantly surprised me was the variety of food offered on this beach. Vendors approach your thatched-roof hut and offer you what's on the daily menu. Almost all of them have a seafood menu, although they mentioned they also had chicken and beef. We had mussel empanadas that cost a little over $2, two dozen delicious, plump, large mussels for $2, and fried fish for $7. Everything was fresh and delicious.

Otra cosa que me sorprendió gratamente fue la variedad de comida que se ofrece en esta playa. Los vendedores se acercan a tu cabaña y te ofrecen el menú del día. Casi todos tienen un menú de mariscos, aunque mencionaron que también tenían pollo y carne de res. Pedimos empanadas de mejillones que costaron poco más de 2 dólares, dos docenas de mejillones grandes, deliciosos y jugosos por 2 dólares, y pescado frito por 7 dólares. Todo estaba fresco y delicioso.

The only problem I noticed was the poor internet signal and weak connection. If your idea is to disconnect from the internet and forget about your cell phone, this place is perfect, but this is a problem when it comes to paying, since if you don't have cash, it can be frustrating trying to make a simple banking transaction over and over again. So my recommendation is that you bring cash or a phone with excellent internet service.

El único problema que noté fue la mala señal de internet y la conexión débil. Si tu idea es desconectarte de internet y olvidarte del celular, este lugar es perfecto, pero esto es un problema a la hora de pagar, ya que si no tienes efectivo, puede ser frustrante intentar hacer una simple transacción bancaria una y otra vez. Así que mi recomendación es que lleves efectivo o un teléfono con excelente servicio de internet.

At the end of the afternoon, the motorcycle couriers came to pick us up, as we had arranged. While we were packing up our things, we couldn't miss one last look at one of the most pristine beaches in my country. The fact that it's so secluded makes it a true hidden gem of the Caribbean and the incomparable Paria Peninsula.

Al final de la tarde, los chicos en moto vinieron a recogernos, como habíamos acordado. Mientras recogíamos nuestras cosas, no pudimos resistir la tentación de echar un último vistazo a una de las playas más vírgenes de mi país. El hecho de que sea tan apartada la convierte en una verdadera joya escondida del Caribe y de la incomparable Península de Paria.
