A tour of the Cruz Salmerón Acosta House Museum

Those of us living in Cumaná speak of and look toward the "Other Coast"—that strip of land visible across the sea where many towns are located, including Araya and Manicuare. You can reach the other coast by land, though the journey takes a long time, or by sea. We chose the latter to travel to Manicuare. The trip takes about 30 minutes by boat—specifically a peñero—departing from the Cumaná maritime terminal.

Upon arrival, we decided to walk along the first of Manicuare’s two main streets and head to the house-museum of the great poet from Sucre—and native of Manicuare—Cruz Salmerón Acosta. We were accompanied that day by Mr. Julio, one of the caretakers of the poet's home and museum. However, if you visit, you will surely find the house quickly, as the entire town is eager to offer guidance and assistance.

At the end of that main street, on a small rise, stands the poet's house, and below—at the foot of the rise—lies the museum. Since Mr. Julio holds the keys to both places, we were able to go inside and see them. It was my first time visiting Cruz Salmerón Acosta's house, and naturally, knowing the story of his tragic life and death makes the experience of seeing the house all the more striking.

The small, humble bahareque house has undergone some changes, yet it retains many features of the original structure. For those unfamiliar with the life and death of Salmerón Acosta, he is known as "the poet of martyrdom"—a title stemming from his early diagnosis with leprosy, a disease that defined his life and left him completely isolated. In fact, he is also known as "the recluse of the Manicuare heights." There, among the items found in the house, the small bed and the cement tub stand out; the latter is designed to resemble the one used to bathe or wash the poet, who required special care due to his illness.

Inside the museum—which is spacious, high-ceilinged, and well-ventilated—we find a display of local pottery, as Manicuare is considered a town where the ceramic tradition has endured over time. Most of these pieces are created by women known as "Las Loceras de Manicuare."

Likewise, framed letters and awards received by Cruz Salmerón Acosta, along with various poems he wrote during his lifetime, are displayed on the museum walls. Some of the texts are originals, while others are transcriptions or photocopies.

One striking feature is the life-size cardboard cutout of Cruz Salmerón Acosta located at the entrance. There is also an image of a dog—a reminder of one of his poems in which he recounts how a dog accompanied him during the exile necessitated by his illness, serving as a true friend.

During our visit, Mr. Julio not only acted as our guide but also shared part of the story of Salmerón Acosta, recounting anecdotes that aren't found in literature or history books but are well-known to the local people. As Mr. Julio told us about the poet's life experiences, we could see just how proud the people of Manicuare are of Cruz Salmerón Acosta.

Without a doubt, one of the most beautiful things about this spot is the view itself. From both the house and the museum, you can see the blue of the sky and the blue of the sea merging into one.

Sometimes, the value of a place lies not in its material possessions, but in the sentimental significance it holds for so many. When we look at the landscape surrounding this house—at the clear, blue horizon—we realize that only from such a beautiful spot could a man condemned by illness create poetry. Only with a view like this could the famous poem "Azul" have been written, and a sigh breathed for a love that was far away.

I don't always carry glasses,😎 Ed. This is a very humble house-museum, just like the life this poet led. Are you back in the US? Sending you a hug.

taking a boat ride across the water sounds like a great way to start a trip. learning about the poet's life and seeing his actual home must have made the history feel so real

Exactly. The very precariousness of the place made us imagine everything the poet experienced in his time—especially given that he had leprosy. Best regards.

I loved that you took this tour of the Cruz Salmerón Acosta Museum. I visited it 40 years ago, and it’s in even better condition now. I’m from the East and live in Cumaná. I hope you have a wonderful day.
