Speaking of the World Cup, I was watching the game between Argentina, my favorite team, and Egypt the other day. It was one of the most surprising matches I've seen in this tournament. After being down 2-0, Argentina managed to come back and win in the 78th minute, with less than 20 minutes left in the game. The final score was 3-2 in favor of the South American team.

Beyond the number of videos and comments circulating online criticizing Argentina, Messi, FIFA, and even the referees, I was struck by the number of videos that used this match to discuss life philosophies, attitudes, and examples we should keep in mind.

In essence, the videos discussed how our defeatist, pessimistic, and negative mindset sometimes prevents us from moving forward, from winning, and even leads to defeat before the fight even begins. They pointed out how many of us, faced with adversity, choose to throw in the towel, accept defeat, and sit idly by, imagining that winning is not only an uphill battle but impossible.

These videos made me reflect and examine myself to see if I'm one of those who give up prematurely or one of those who fight until the final whistle. And while there have been battles in which I've been defeated, I've never had a submissive or surrendered attitude.

As a Venezuelan, for example, for over 26 years I have voted, marched, and protested to get rid of this government. Not even when I knew my life was in danger or that my country's National Electoral Council (CNE) was in favor of the regime did I stop acting against this vile government.

As the aunt of a nephew who died at 18 from bone cancer, I never let the fatalistic diagnosis weaken my will, steal my hope for a miracle, or paralyze me with fear. On the contrary, that diagnosis made clear to me the magnitude of the monster I had to face and how much I had to do to defeat it. That's why if I had to run, I ran at full speed; if I had to get up early, I didn't sleep; if I had to go up and down stairs feeling like I had no strength left, I did it, even if I had to crawl. Sometimes, the only thing you can do is fight, and you must do it as if your life depended on it.

So yes, I like that saying about life: maybe it's the 78th minute, but the game isn't over yet. Maybe I'm losing the battle, but I'm not going to give up the victory so easily. It's not even about having a champion's mentality, because you know that sometimes you lose; the idea is not to have a mindset of surrender, of resignation. To know that as long as the game isn't over, we can win. And when I talk about the game, I'm talking about life....
