Era invierno y había comenzado la guerra. Yo era apenas un niño que no sabía y no entendía lo que estaba pasando. Solo recuerdo que una madrugada mi madre me tomó entre sus brazos, tomó una pequeña maleta y tomamos un auto que nos llevó a la estación del tren. It was winter and the war had begun. I was just a child who did not know and did not understand what was happening. I only remember that one early morning my mother took me in her arms, took a small suitcase and we took a car that took us to the train station. There, my mother sat me on her lap and asked me to sleep while the train started its march and she watched through the window.

En un instante del camino, escuchamos una explosión. Me desperté sobresaltado y mi madre me tenía abrazado con fuerza. Recuerdo los latidos acelerados de mi madre, sus manos frías alrededor mío y la palidez de su cara. Ella tenía los ojos abiertos y vi hacia dónde miraba: unos hombres vestidos con uniforme venían por el pasillo de tren revisando la documentación de todos los pasajeros.

At one point along the way, we heard an explosion. I woke up startled and my mother was holding me tightly in her arms. I remember my mother's racing heartbeat, her cold hands around me and the pallor of her face. Her eyes were open and I saw where she was looking: men in uniform were coming down the train aisle checking the papers of all the passengers.

En eso el tren se detuvo y los ojos de mi madre se salieron de las órbitas porque uno de los uniformados llegó a su lado y le extendió la mano. Sentí que el corazón de mi madre dejaba de latir y me apretaba más fuerte contra su pecho. No entendí lo que el hombre decía, tampoco lo que decía ella. Solo veía sus rostros y me daba cuenta que en el de mi madre había rabia y dolor, no miedo.

At that moment the train stopped and my mother's eyes popped out of their sockets because one of the uniformed men came to her side and held out his hand. I felt my mother's heart stop beating and she squeezed me tighter against her chest. I didn't understand what the man was saying, nor what she was saying. I could only see their faces and I realized that my mother's face was full of anger and pain, not fear.

El hombre entonces me miró y yo, aunque tenía miedo, lo miré de frente sin soltar ninguna lágrima ni hacer ningún movimiento. El hombre se marchó y escuché que mi madre suspiraba y que su corazón volvía a latir. Los hombres se bajaron y el tren continuó la marcha. Cuando vi el rostro de mi madre, estaba sonriendo: era una risa de alegría que no olvidé jamás. Después de eso, me recosté en el pecho de mi madre y me dormí con los armoniosos latidos de su corazón.

The man then looked at me and I, even though I was afraid, looked him straight in the face without shedding any tears or making any movements. The man left and I heard my mother sigh and her heart beat again. The men got off and the train continued on. When I saw my mother's face, she was smiling: it was a laugh of joy that I never forgot. After that, I lay down on my mother's chest and fell asleep to the harmonious beating of her heart.
