Peace is everyone's task

September 21 was International Peace Day, and what better way to celebrate it than to reflect on the relevance of the pursuit of peace today and how, by joining forces, we can achieve it.

It is no secret that Venezuela, my country, has been going through a process of confrontation for more than 25 years, not only with other countries but also among ourselves, its citizens: between neighbors, friends, and even family members. A confrontation that, at a certain point, brought rivalries, separation, and even death. Currently, although the seed of enmity remains sown in the souls of many, we observe that for the majority, the desire to live in peace, harmony, and concord prevails. We are tired of hatred, resentment, and wars.

In one of my past writings, I talked about how I drifted apart from a former teacher, who was almost like a father to me, just because he was a Chavista and I am from the opposition. That simple detail caused our friendship to suffer a major break, and we even stopped talking for a long time. That unusual event was enough for me to reflect on what was more important to me: losing friendships over absurd wars or maintaining peace even if it means keeping silent?

That is why for a long time, because I have Chavista friends, I try to keep political conversations separate from my encounters with them. Any negative comment or criticism of this government, I make it respectfully, without offending or generalizing, without mocking, with the appropriate dosage of tone and pace. Likewise, I demand the same treatment from my friends. I do not allow mockery, inappropriate words, or anyone trying to impose anything on me, and from that mutual respect, from that need to stay united, we have managed to build bridges that let the river of harmony flow smoothly.

Just as I am with my friends, I am the same at home. I know perfectly well the boundaries between my needs and the interests of those around me, and I do not cross those boundaries. I respect, trust, and support. My loved ones, also aware of the spaces each person occupies, treat others with love, without offense, without aggression. Never, ever, will they see me raise my voice with rudeness or insults, or verbally or physically attack someone just because a cashier made a mistake or the bus driver dropped me far from my stop, or because I didn’t like what someone did. I try to remain calm because I do not give my inner peace to anyone.

It is not about staying silent in the face of injustice or not defending oneself from wrongdoers. No. It is knowing that if we respond in the same way, it is like adding fuel to the fire. There is a way to speak, to say things, to lower the tone, to be appropriate. 'I need you to stay calm so we can talk.' Then, only if the other person is willing to lower their arms, can we have a dialogue.

I believe that everyone’s help is needed to achieve peace, including inner peace. We are social beings and do not live in a bubble; what surrounds us affects us, even if we cultivate our self-love. If I, you, others, and everyone aim to meet each other, live in harmony, and be calm, nothing will stand in the way of that ideal state. So a task for everyone is, before responding to hurt, to shout, or any confrontation, to inhale and exhale, count to ten or even a hundred. In any kind of war, bet on peace. That will be the greatest victory.
