Nobody here hears the dogs barking
From the trucks, about fifty soldiers came down. Maybe more. There were more soldiers there than the last time the hill collapsed and we called for help because the houses were walled up with mud and debris. On that occasion we called the firemen, the people from the mayor's office and we even went to the radio station to file a report. They only sent ten soldiers, almost children, to help us. When they arrived, we had already done part of the work ourselves, and the only thing they did was to stand still with their long guns.
There were the dogs barking like crazy. The soldiers all went to the house of Fidel, a young university student, bearded and thin, who always spoke ill of the government. In that house, the most ramshackle of all, the dogs spent the night every day. There was no one there to scare them away, to get rid of fleas, or to bathe them. It was as if they were in the street: without owner or government. The military surrounded Fidel's house, they murmured among themselves and the dogs kept barking, jumping from one side to the other. There were no shots, only the sound of boots on the dry bushes as they walked.
They went for reinforcements. If before there were fifty, now a hundred soldiers came down. They had their faces covered and long guns. They were on the prowl for two hours, and for two hours the dogs barked too much. Suddenly we heard the silence in the night and we sensed that they were gone. It was not long before the sun would be up and many of us, late at night because of the noises, fell asleep, perhaps calmly, safely, with the peace of mind that the silence of the dogs gave us.
That is why today, when the shots rang out, we opened our eyes in surprise, terrified, not knowing what to do. By inertia, we jumped up and looked out of the windows and saw how the military took Fidel away. He looked so weak, so small, and the military with their weapons, their uniforms and their war helmets, so fierce. No one had heard the dogs barking, not even Fidel who had also fallen asleep. The silence of the dogs had calmed us. We did not know that the government had also put an end to the dogs, that with their weapons, just as they had done with us, they had provoked their silence.
Until a future story, friends

This is a wonderful tale with a lot of political intrigue
I really like the important role that the dogs play in the story. They're like guardians of the people. Well done!
Exactly! Sometimes, animals are able to announce danger. Thank you for your support and comment. Regards
I really liked this story, very pleasant to read and I also liked that fantastic realism that is contained about the power of sensing an uncertain future that dogs can sense.
Thanks for sharing.
Good day.
Animals have that power and so do some people. Greetings
