Last weekend, we headed to Caripe, a town in Monagas state located about two and a half hours from my home in Cumaná. We rented a car for the round trip at a cost of $40—a price we found excellent—and set off at 9:00 a.m. along the Cumaná-Cumanacoa highway.

El fin de semana pasado fuimos a Caripe, una localidad del estado Monagas situada a unas dos horas y media de mi casa en Cumaná. Alquilamos un coche para el viaje de ida y vuelta por 40 dólares —un precio que nos pareció excelente— y salimos a las 9:00 a. m. por la carretera Cumaná-Cumanacoa.

One of the area's main attractions is its lush vegetation and cool climate. As we made our way into Monagas state toward Caripe, we saw towering mountains, dense green foliage, and even mist—especially since we were traveling early in the day. Although our primary destination was the Caripe tourist lookout, we couldn't pass up the chance to stop and visit one of the most famous churches in both Caripe and Venezuela: the San Agustín Church.

Uno de los principales atractivos de la zona es su exuberante vegetación y su clima fresco. Mientras nos adentrábamos en el estado Monagas rumbo a Caripe, vimos montañas imponentes, un denso follaje verde e incluso neblina, sobre todo porque viajábamos a primera hora de la mañana. Aunque nuestro destino principal era el mirador turístico de Caripe, no podíamos dejar pasar la oportunidad de detenernos a visitar una de las iglesias más famosas tanto de Caripe como de Venezuela: la iglesia de San Agustín.

We got out and spent some time at the church, which is located in the San Agustín district of Caripe. It is renowned for having a façade and side walls completely covered in ivy—planted by local residents—giving it a unique appearance that has turned it into a major local tourist attraction. Everyone who visits makes sure to take a photo in front of it.

Nos bajamos y pasamos un rato en la iglesia, situada en el sector San Agustín de Caripe. Es conocida por tener la fachada y los muros laterales completamente cubiertos de hiedra —plantada por los propios vecinos—, lo que le confiere un aspecto único que la ha convertido en un importante atractivo turístico local. Todo el que la visita se asegura de tomarse una foto frente a ella.

Built in 1972 through the efforts of the local government and community donations from San Agustín residents, this Catholic church is also known as the "Ivy Temple." The ivy covering it was brought from Italy—which is why it is little known—and many people from other states come to this church to get married. Also, surrounding the church, you can find stalls selling fruits and vegetables, as well as the famous strawberries with cream—a signature Caripe dessert that you simply must try if you are ever in the area.

Construida en 1972 gracias a los esfuerzos del gobierno local y a las donaciones de los habitantes de San Agustín, esta iglesia católica es conocida también como el "Templo de la Hiedra". La hiedra que la cubre fue traída de Italia —razón por la cual es poco conocida— y muchas personas de otros estados acuden a esta iglesia para casarse. También, en los alrededores de la iglesia se pueden encontrar puestos de venta de frutas y verduras, así como las famosas fresas con crema, un postre emblemático de Caripe que simplemente hay que probar si se está por la zona.

This is the third time I have visited this church—the first two times were a long time ago—and I have never found it open. I know from information online that inside there are images of the Divine Child, the Nazarene, Saint Jude Thaddeus, the Divine Shepherdess, the Immaculate Conception, the Mystical Rose, and, of course, Saint Augustine of Hippo, but I have never been able to see them in person. I do not know if it has specific opening hours or if it only opens seasonally. It was noon on a Sunday when I visited; perhaps they only open for morning and afternoon Mass.

Esta es la tercera vez que visito esta iglesia —las dos primeras fueron hace mucho tiempo— y nunca la he encontrado abierta. Sé, por información en línea, que en su interior hay imágenes del Divino Niño, el Nazareno, San Judas Tadeo, la Divina Pastora, la Inmaculada Concepción, la Rosa Mística y, por supuesto, San Agustín de Hipona, pero nunca he podido verlas en persona. No sé si tiene un horario de apertura específico o si solo abre por temporadas. La visité un domingo al mediodía; tal vez solo abran para las misas de la mañana y de la tarde.

You wouldn't believe the number of people who arrived to take photos while we were there; at one point, we even had to wait in a short line just to get a picture at the church entrance. I feel this place is unique because of its façade, which explains why tourists from all over the country visit—not to go inside, but to snap a photo out front. Online, it is said that every ivy plant people sowed represents a miracle and a promise; the story goes that, rather than merely building it, people planted the church there with faith and love. Undoubtedly, this is a Venezuelan landmark that—despite its simplicity—has become an iconic destination within tourist, historical, and religious circles, and it is a place you simply must visit.

No creerías la cantidad de gente que llegaba a tomarse fotos mientras estábamos allí; en un momento dado, incluso tuvimos que hacer una pequeña fila solo para conseguir una foto en la entrada de la iglesia. Considero que este lugar es único gracias a su fachada, lo que explica por qué lo visitan turistas de todo el país: no para entrar, sino para tomarse una foto frente a ella. Se dice que cada planta de hiedra sembrada por la gente representa un milagro y una promesa; cuenta la historia que, más que simplemente construirla, la gente plantó la iglesia allí con fe y amor. Sin duda, se trata de un lugar emblemático de Venezuela que —pese a su sencillez— se ha convertido en un destino icónico en los ámbitos turístico, histórico y religioso; es, sencillamente, un sitio que debes visitar.
