One of the towns I visited recently, belonging to the Montes Municipality in Sucre State, was Arenas. This small town is located just before the Cumanacoa Valley and can be reached by land, either in your own car or by public transportation.

Una de las localidades que visité recientemente, perteneciente al municipio de Montes en el estado Sucre, fue Arenas. Este pequeño pueblo se ubica justo antes del Valle de Cumanacoa y se puede llegar por tierra, ya sea en auto o en transporte público

When you arrive in town, a little past the gas station, the first thing you see, and perhaps the most striking feature, is the main square, where the Church of Our Lady of Candelaria, the patron saint of Arenas, is located.

Al llegar al pueblo, un poco después de la gasolinera, lo primero que se ve, y quizás lo más llamativo, es la plaza principal, donde se encuentra la Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria, patrona de Arenas.

As in most Venezuelan towns, the main squares serve as gathering places for the community, so there are benches everywhere where people meet, chat, or watch the day go by. Here, there are many leafy trees, silent witnesses to the climatic changes in this area, ranging from intense heat waves to terrible storms that have devastated everything.

Como en la mayoría de los pueblos venezolanos, las plazas principales sirven como puntos de encuentro para la comunidad, por lo que hay bancos por todas partes donde la gente se reúne, conversa o simplemente observa el paso del día. Aquí abundan los árboles frondosos, testigos silenciosos de los cambios climáticos de la zona, los cuales van desde intensas olas de calor hasta terribles tormentas que han devastado todo.

This spacious and well-maintained Plaza Bolívar, located in the heart of town, not only features a bust of Bolívar, but also playgrounds, the town's church, and free high-speed internet access. For those who don't know, most towns have a Plaza Bolívar, a tribute to the Venezuelan Liberator and hero, Simón Bolívar.

Esta espaciosa y bien cuidada Plaza Bolívar, ubicada en el corazón del pueblo, no solo cuenta con un busto de Bolívar, sino también con parques infantiles, la iglesia del pueblo y acceso gratuito a internet de alta velocidad. Para quienes no lo sepan, la mayoría de las ciudades de Venezuela tienen una Plaza Bolívar, un homenaje al Libertador y héroe venezolano, Simón Bolívar.

This plaza is strategically located because you can not only see the various cars entering and leaving the town or passing through on their way to Cumanacoa, but you also see inns, cockfighting arenas, and cultural centers surrounding the plaza.

Esta plaza tiene una ubicación estratégica, ya que desde allí no solo se pueden observar los diversos vehículos que entran y salen del pueblo o que lo atraviesan camino a Cumanacoa, sino también las posadas, las plazas de gallos de pelea y los centros culturales que la rodean.

The main streets of this town are Bolívar Street, Candelaria Street, and Andrés Eloy Blanco Street. In my childhood, I remember going to the patron saint festivities in Arenas and seeing how its streets and main plaza filled with colorful decorations and festive music.

Las calles principales de este pueblo son la calle Bolívar, la calle Candelaria y la calle Andrés Eloy Blanco. De niña, recuerdo haber asistido a las fiestas patronales de Arenas y ver cómo sus calles y la plaza principal se llenaban de coloridas decoraciones y música festiva.

But if there is one thing that stands out and fills the inhabitants of Arenas with pride, it is their church, which was built between 1777 and 1782. This church suffered a fire in 1817, which destroyed its wooden roof. It was later restored between 1974 and 1975. This church was declared a National Historic Monument in 1960.

Pero si hay algo que destaca y llena de orgullo a los habitantes de Arenas, es su iglesia, construida entre 1777 y 1782. Esta iglesia sufrió un incendio en 1817 que destruyó su techo de madera. Posteriormente fue restaurada entre 1974 y 1975. Esta iglesia fue declarada Monumento Histórico Nacional en 1960.

That day, since we arrived at midday, the church was closed. However, a staff member saw us taking photographs and asked if we were interested in seeing the inside of the church. They opened it, and we were able to appreciate the simple beauty of this place, which inspires so much pride among the residents of Arenas.

Ese día, como llegamos al mediodía, la iglesia estaba cerrada. Sin embargo, un miembro del personal nos vio tomando fotografías y nos preguntó si nos interesaba ver el interior de la iglesia. La abrieron y pudimos apreciar la sencilla belleza de este lugar, que inspira tanto orgullo y veneración entre los residentes de Arenas.

The patron saint of Arenas is Our Lady of Candelaria, so February 2nd is the town's patron saint festival. During this festival, tourists and locals alike take to the streets to celebrate the Virgin. There are usually religious activities, but also games, food and drink vendors, live music, and the crowning of the festival queen.

As I was leaving Arenas, I remembered the many legends I've heard about this church and this town. The one I remember most vividly is the one that says no one can sleep in this church because at night you can hear the galloping of horses and people fighting as if it were the Battle of Independence.

Como ya les decía, la patrona de Arenas es Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria, por lo que el 2 de febrero se celebra la fiesta patronal del pueblo. Durante esta fiesta, tanto turistas como lugareños salen a las calles para celebrar a la Virgen. Suele haber actividades religiosas, pero también juegos, puestos de comida y bebida, música en vivo y la coronación de la reina de la fiesta.

Al salir de Arenas, recordé las numerosas leyendas que he oído sobre esta iglesia y este pueblo. La que recuerdo con más claridad es la que dice que nadie puede dormir en esta iglesia porque por la noche se oye el galope de los caballos y a la gente luchando como si fuera la Batalla de la Independencia.
