Hello, Hivers, I hope you are doing well. Today I bring you a work that, personally, moved me to tears: Blue Eyes Black Hair Blue Eyes, by the French writer Marguerite Duras. It had been a long time since I had read a book and I found this copy, at first it didn't catch my attention and it was hard to read the first few pages, but after a few more chapters, I couldn't stop. It is enigmatic, dark, complicated and extremely heartbreaking. The details are so many that if you don't pay attention, you can easily get lost.

It's about the lost love of two characters, without origin or name, totally unknown to each other, but sharing a mutual desire: the love of a young man. For sure, I could not understand very well if this young man or woman, it has so many metaphors that I lost that detail and in the end I was left with the doubt. The most spectacular thing about this fact is that none of these three characters know each other. The strange agreement that "He" proposes to "She", is based on both of them accompanying each other in their unbearable pain for losing that fleeting love that burned their souls, they accompany each other faithfully night after night to drown their sorrows in suicidal delusions. There is no contact, he does not desire any woman, but she tries to change that idea even if it is in vain and, lost in her total depression, she continues her pact until the end. After a while they both discover that their sadness comes from the same person, they both fell in love with the same young man, and the most painful thing for them is that they never got to meet him. They wait vaguely for their ship to return and be lucky enough to cross paths again before the dreaded but long awaited end for both of them: death.

The presentation of this entire work is extraordinary; how it goes detailing each space of that deplorable room; how the emotions of each of them could be transmitted to the reader; everything can be complicated from one second to another between the explosive personalities of both of them. At the same time, all these events are described as if it were a play, that added another plus of emotions, you can easily place yourself in each scenario. Every emotion you can really feel as if it was happening to our skin, that's why I couldn't stop crying, so I don't recommend reading it if you have just ended a relationship or you are going through depression, it makes you want to jump into the nearest car and go with "Him" and "Her". This book I finished reading, last year and it's only now that I dare to remember everything and write about it, it's reliving that unrequited love of these two people and suffering with them again. I loved it. I highly recommend, read it with a good rum, (if you smoke) with a good box of cigars and lots of tissues, the emotional charge you haven't felt before, will come through in spades.

What a beautiful sounding book; to wonder - was the young man they were both connected to a 'concept' or himself a metaphor for the ideal love?

Very interesting question. It could be the idealization of romantic love to which we have become accustomed and the sadness for not having achieved it. Or, it could even be a metaphor for suicide seen in the romantic way; there are those who give themselves to death with such conviction and naturalness, that they seem to love the idea (hence the young man with black hair and blue eyes, he could be the personification of death). I invite you to read it and let me know what you think.
