A few days ago I was having a conversation with my husband, and among many things, he was asking me something: Since when did I not feel the festive spirit of Christmas? I honestly don't remember when was the last time I got excited about Christmas. A few years ago, when grandma died, I spent Christmas with my godmother, but I went into depression in the middle of the gathering and had to be taken home, and still my family spent it "united and happy"... that was the last time we would all be together, more than ten years ago. All in all, that wasn't what made me dislike Christmas, I still wanted to decorate the house and I was excited to think what a wonderful dinner we would have, even though I knew everyone wouldn't be coming like they used to. Suddenly, I don't remember anymore. The last time we decorated the house I don't remember, I know it was years after Grandma, but I don't know exactly when. After that time, I have no memory of feeling anything special at Christmas, I guess you could say I became a Grinch.

If we think about it a little bit (Hey!, that's my perspective), why only celebrate on certain dates, celebrate what? I won't get into the religious stuff because it's deep water that I'm always looking to drown in. It is supposed to celebrate love and union, but (I know that not in all cases) months ago not even a phone call, a support, a gesture of affection... something that could really be celebrated on these dates. I see it as an act of obligation, something out of mere commitment. The talks are always the same and end the same way. As the years go by, I've noticed that it's getting worse and worse.

Last year, we helped an aunt (one of the few who understands what I go through) to decorate her house and make hallacas (typical dish of my country), but due to family conflicts I decided not to attend the Christmas gathering and I still maintain that it was the best thing I could do. My husband and I spent it alone at home, bought some knick-knacks and watched movies; almost at the end of the night, my uncles invited us to receive Christmas with them. My mind was in a strange state between peace, happiness and remorse, but it was really for the best because by the 31st, it would be the straw that broke the camel's back. That night became excessively awkward, little conversation, tares were the topping of the drinks, and hugging a wall for the new year was warmer and more sincere.

This year I find myself at the same crossroads and since October (which was the last family gathering) my stomach was already in knots. As the day approaches, there is only one thing on my mind: to run as far away as possible in an absurd attempt to continue to save my mental and emotional peace. But this is a huge internal conflict for me: on the one hand what I have already told you, the engagement; on the other hand I don't know if it would be the last Christmas with my grandfather in life; and ultimately, I don't think I could stand another family reunion, the last one this year was the last straw that broke the camel's back of how horrible and disastrous it was. I am still thinking about what I will do, I am looking for any excuse to say I will not go, although the decision has been made.

Everything I do to improve my mind and my mood, falls apart in instants and all kinds of negative feelings invade me. The thought of confronting my family is just a scenario in my mind because I have never had enough strength to do it, I just turn away and even then I am already the enemy. The internal and constant struggle hurts immensely, I do not wish it on anyone, but I know that I am not wrong for making such a drastic decision; although at times I collapse, I try to convince myself that I am doing it for my well-being. Making others understand this often puts me in a role in which I am the bad and selfish one, without them seeing their own mistakes. That is so typical in the family, everyone has very good voices to accuse, criticize and judge others, but as soon as someone thinks differently, the crazy and wrong one is you. I will not continue participating in these meetings full of toxicity and fictitious affection.

Hola 😊/

¡No estamos solos!

Te entiendo totalmente, no vayas a intoxicarte a ningún sitio aunque quienes estén sean familia. No te sientas culpable, no lo eres. Sé feliz.
