Hi guys, I hope you are feeling well. As yesterday was a very rainy and cold day, I felt like watching a little movie, and between searching and searching, I found this one. I had already seen it once on TV, but it was already started, so I took advantage of the internet and watched it again. It's Dallas Buyer Club (or by its Latin translation: El Club de los Desahuciados) by Canadian director Jean-Marc Vallée (he has made a lot of movies with good reviews, but I haven't seen them), and Matthew McConaughey as our protagonist.

More or less similar to my previous review (actors stepping out of their roles a bit), this time we don't see a handsome and romantic Mattie, but a very destroyed (both in health and in his physique), very despot and arrogant one. We also find the participation of a Jared Leto very... transformed and dedicated to his role, which I loved (I'll tell you why at the end).

Hola, chicos, espero se encuentren muy bien. Como ayer fue un día muy lluvioso y con full frío, me dieron ganas de verme una peliculita y entre buscar y buscar, encontré esta. Ya la había visto una vez en la tele, pero ya estaba empezada, así que aproveché las bondades del internet y la volví a ver. Se trata de Dallas Buyer Club (o por su traducción al latino: El Club de los Desahuciados) del director canadiense Jean-Marc Vallée (ha hecho un montón de películas con buenas críticas, pero no las he visto), y Matthew McConaughey como nuestro protagonista.

Más o menos parecida a mi reseña anterior (actores saliéndose un poco de su rol), en esta ocasión no vemos a un guapo y romántico Mattie, sino a uno muy destruido (tanto en salud como en su físico), muy déspota y arrogante. También nos encontramos con la participación de un Jared Leto muy… transformado y entregado a su papel, lo cual me encantó (al final les comento porque).

We are set in Texas, in the 80's, where unbridled sex abounds, drugs on every corner, lots of rodeo bulls and AIDS abounds, as well as ignorance. Ron (Matthew) is an inveterate womanizer who swindles on rodeo bets to afford his drugs and alcohol. One day, by accident, he discovers he has HIV. So far, you could say that it's a strong plot but without much fabric, but let's remember that we are in a place and at a time when the health system was scarce, and pharmaceutical companies were doing their best to sell their products. This is where it all begins.

Nos situamos en Texas, en los años 80, donde abunda el sexo desenfrenado, drogas en cada esquina, muchos toros de rodeo y el SIDA abunda, así como la ignorancia. Ron (Matthew) es un mujeriego empedernido que estafa en apuestas de rodeo para poderse costear sus drogas y alcohol. Un día, por accidente, descubre que tiene VIH. Hasta ahí, se puede decir que es un argumento fuerte pero sin mucha tela, pero recordemos que estamos en un sitio y en una época en donde el sistema de salud era escaso, y las empresas farmacéuticas hacían de las suyas por poder vender sus productos. Aquí es donde comienza todo.

When diagnosed with the virus, he is given at most 30 days to live and, Ron goes into deep denial, it was assumed that those who got it were "faggots" and he was a "vagina addict" (that's what I meant ignorance abounded). When he saw that the symptoms were getting worse, he began to do some research and realized that it was true, he was dying and he had to do something about it. He asked to enter the testing program for a new medication but was not admitted because he did not meet the profile (anyone would think that having HIV would get him into a medication program for the virus, but no), so he managed to get the medication illegally. Obviously, not being under control and continuing to lead his "normal life" brought him more problems and he is again admitted to the hospital where he is not even given hope and is again denied admission to the program. There he meets Rayon (Jared), a transsexual addict who also has the virus. Tired of not being given a solution, Ron chooses to go to Mexico to find a "specialist" doctor; there he discovers that the medication he was taking (plus the drugs), developed AIDS and had him one step away from death. Together with the doctor, he did research on a treatment that would help him and be able to return home, but not without first arming himself with a shipment of the treatment to be able to sell it (because he was sick, but he never stopped being shameless).

¡No hay nada que pueda matar al este maldito!

Al ser diagnosticado con el virus, le dan como mucho 30 días de vida y, Ron entra en negación profunda, se supone que a los que les daba eso eran “maricones” y él era un “adicto a la vagina” (a eso me refería a que abundaba la ignorancia). Al ver que los síntomas iban agravándose, empieza a investigar al respecto y se da cuenta de que sí era cierto, estaba muriendo y tenía que hacer algo al respecto. Pide entrar al programa de prueba de un nuevo medicamento pero no lo admiten por no cumplir con el perfil (cualquiera pensaría que con tener VIH podría entrar a un programa de medicación para el virus, pero no), por lo que se las arregla para conseguir la medicación ilegalmente. Obviamente, al no estar contralado y seguir llevando su “vida normal”, le trajo mayores problemas y es nuevamente internado en el hospital donde ni le dan esperanzas y le vuelven a negar la admisión al programa. Ahí conoce a Rayon (Jared), un adicto transexual que también tiene el virus. Harto de que no le dieran una solución, Ron elige irse a México a buscar un médico “especialista”; allá descubre que la medicación que estaba tomando (más las drogas), le desarrollaron el SIDA y lo tenía a un paso de la muerte. Junto al médico, hizo investigaciones sobre un tratamiento que le ayudara y poder regresar a casa, no sin antes armarse de un cargamento del tratamiento para poderlo vender (porque sí enfermo, pero nunca dejar ser un sin vergüenza).

Once back home, he forms an alliance with Rayon to be able to sell the drugs, but then Ron realizes that it is better to "give them away" as long as people pay a monthly membership. Ron has researched all the treatments, the pros and cons, and realizes that the medication program he wanted to get into is actually making the infected sicker (it was actually a high dose poison that they were putting in) and they keep doing "tests" until they get the dosage right; but this is not told to the patient or family members, for them it's all working great. Because it is such a segregated state with high rates of contagion, it turned out to be the ideal place to set up their experiments at the expense of people's lives. This caused an endless war between Ron and the FDA, even when he was showing them his research and living proof that the treatment he was offering did work.

Ya estando de regreso a casa, se forma alianza con Rayon para poder vender los medicamentos, pero luego Ron se da cuenta que es mejor “regalarlos” siempre y cuando las personas paguen una membresía mensual. A todas estas, Ron ha investigado sobre todos los tratamientos, los pros y contras, y se percata de que el programa de medicación al que quería entrar, ciertamente lo que está logrando es enfermar más a los infectados (en realidad era un veneno en altas dosis como lo estaban colocando) y siguen haciendo “análisis” hasta lograr la dosis correcta; pero esto no es dicho ni al paciente ni a los familiares, para ellos todo está funcionando de maravilla. Por ser un estado tan segregado y con altos índices de contagios, resultó ser el espacio idóneo para montar sus experimentos a costa de la vida de personas. Esto ocasionó una guerra interminable entre Ron y la FDA, aun cuando él les mostraba sus investigaciones y siendo prueba viviente de que el tratamiento que él estaba ofreciendo sí funcionaba.

When everyone found out that Ron had AIDS, he was segregated from his group, even being labeled a homosexual. He, every male vernacular, always hated and mocked gays; even when he was first diagnosed, he still disliked them, only Rayon managed to open his eyes because they obviously needed them to be able to do business. Rayon became a support for Ron and vice versa, even though Ron would never accept it and tell him so. Even though he knew Rayon was hopeless, he was still on drugs and might not survive, he treated him better than any other homophobic man; they were like brothers, they picked on each other but always supported each other. And that was what Rayon was looking for, a little acceptance and appreciation in his shattered world even though he struggled to decorate it and make it shine.

Al todos enterarse que Ron tenía SIDA, fue segregado de su grupo, hasta lo pusieron como homosexual. Él, todo macho vernáculo, siempre odió y se mofaba de los gays; incluso al principio de ser diagnosticado, seguía repudiándolos, solo Rayon logró abrirle los ojos porque obviamente necesitaban de ellos para poder levantar el negocio. Rayon se volvió un apoyo para Ron y viceversa, aunque Ron nunca lo aceptara y se lo dijera. Aunque él sabía que Rayon no tenía remedio, seguía drogándose y que quizás no sobreviviría, lo trató mejor que cualquier otro hombre homofóbico; eran como hermanos, se metían uno con el otro pero siempre se apoyaban. Y eso era lo que buscaba Rayon, un poco de aceptación y aprecio en su mundo hecho trisas aunque él luchara por decorarlo y hacerlo brillar.

Much changed in Ron's personality while he was helping others, he no longer sought to live for himself alone, but to fight for the lives that now depended on him. He didn't die at 30 days as he had been told, but at 7 years. I don't say that as a spoiler (as if I haven't thrown out enough already), it's reality, this story really happened. Matthew and Jared's preparation to pull off such a flawless performance was arduous. I read somewhere that Matthew lost more than 20 kilos in a few months; Jared lost about 20 to 15 kilos, plus he took the role so seriously that he spent months acting as a woman to make the role come out as natural as possible, and he succeeded. Matthew played the Texan himself better than many I've seen, the suffering and desperation was easily conveyed making you believe he was really going through it (starving, kind of made it easy for him). The sweetness Jared showed, I found so tender, wanting to live but unable to stop being an addict, knowing the consequences and still seeking to be the most beautiful thing, it was heartbreaking. So if you ask me, I will answer as I always do: "If you haven't seen it, see it, and if you have seen it, see it again, you can't miss it at all."

Mucho cambió la personalidad de Ron mientras estaba ayudando a los demás, ya no buscaba vivir solo por él, sino por luchar por las vidas que ahora dependían de él. No murió a los 30 días que le habían dicho, sino a los 7 años. No lo digo como spoiler (como si ya no he tirado suficientes), es la realidad, esta historia pasó realmente. La preparación de Matthew y de Jared para lograr una actuación tan impecable fue ardua. Por ahí leí que Matthew rebajó más de 20 kilos en unos pocos meses; Jared perdió cerca de 20 o 15 kilos, además de que se tomó tan en serio el papel que duró meses actuando como mujer para que el papel saliera de lo más natural y lo logró. Matthew encarnó al propio texano mejor que muchos que he visto, el sufrimiento y desespero se transmitía fácilmente haciendo creer que estaba pasando por eso de verdad (muerto de hambre, como que se le hizo fácil). La dulzura que mostró Jared, me resultó tan tierna, queriendo vivir pero sin poder dejar de ser un adicto, sabiendo las consecuencias y aun buscando ser lo más hermoso, era desgarrador. Así que si me preguntan, les responderé como siempre: “Si no la han visto, véanla, y si ya la vieron, vuélvanla a ver, no tiene pérdida de nada”.
