We Swallow Life: Swallow (2019) + Analysis.
I don't know how it's possible that I didn't know about this movie until I saw it on Instagram, as soon as I saw what it was about, I ran to find it. Although I admit it took me a while to process it, because the subject matter it touches on resonates a lot personally, and yet it still didn't fail to shock and please me. Swallow is a psychological thriller, directed and written by French director Carlo Mirabella-Davis. The main role, goes to the hand of the beautiful Haley Bennett, although I have seen her in few productions, her participation in The Girl on the Train (2016) was very good.
No sé cómo es posible que no supe de esta película hasta que lo vi en Instagram, apenas vi de qué se trataba, corrí a buscarla. Aunque admito que tardé un poco en procesarla, porque el tema que toca resuena mucho en lo personal, y aun así no dejó de impactarme y gustarme. Swallow se trata de un film de suspenso psicológico, dirigido y escrito por el director francés Carlo Mirabella-Davis. El papel principal, va de la mano de la hermosa Haley Bennett, aunque la he visto en pocas producciones, su participación en La Chica del Tren (2016) fue muy bueno.
Argument.
Hunter is a typical housewife with (seemingly) the life she's always dreamed of, yet ideas begin to creep into her mind that put her life in grave danger.
Argumento.
Hunter es la típica ama de casa con (aparentemente) la vida que siempre había soñado, aunque en su mente comienzan a llegar ideas que ponen su vida en un grave peligro.
Nothing is what it seems.
Hunter's life, beyond seeming perfect, is a world full of appearances. Richie, her husband, seems like something out of a dream, but the reality is that he always pushes Hunter away and belittles her. Her in-laws are the epitome of hypocrisy and contempt, although they will always maintain their role as in-laws of the year in the eyes of others.
Nada es lo que parece.
La vida de Hunter, más allá de parecer perfecta, es un mundo lleno de apariencias. Richie, su esposo, parece sacado de un sueño, pero la realidad es que siempre aparta a Hunter y la menosprecia. Sus suegros ni hablar, son la personificación de la hipocresía y desprecio, aunque siempre ante los demás mantendrán su papel de los suegros del año.
All alone.
Even though her husband fills her with all the luxuries Hunter asks for, she will always feel that emptiness in her life, no matter how much she tries to fill herself with joy with beautiful flowers, the perfect decoration of her house... she will always have in her eyes a nostalgia that stabs, and of which no one notices. Finding out that she is pregnant is supposed to bring joy to everyone, but she is still not completely convinced and, of course, she will not show it; she must simply be the perfect, self-sacrificing wife and that's it!
Completamente sola.
A pesar de que su esposo la llena de todos los lujos que Hunter le pide, ella siempre sentirá ese vacío en su vida, por más que intente llenarse de alegría con flores hermosas, la decoración perfecta de su casa… siempre tendrá en sus ojos una nostalgia que apuñala, y de la cual nadie se da cuenta. Enterarse de que está embarazada, supone que traerá alegría a todos, pero a ella aún no la convence del todo y, por supuesto, no lo demostrará; simplemente debe ser la esposa abnegada y perfecta ¡Y ya!

Almost immediately upon learning of her pregnancy, she begins to feel strange, an idea invades her little by little until she carries it out. Eating a marble filled her with so much happiness, it made her feel so full that even she couldn't believe it; the intense color and the softness in her mouth, transported her to a place Hunter had never known. Little by little, she realized that she would need more, more and more, until it got out of control and she was taken to the emergency room to have all those little objects in her stomach that filled her with happiness removed.

Casi de inmediato al enterarse de su embarazo, comienza a sentirse extraña, una idea la invade poco a poco hasta que lo lleva a cabo. Comerse una canica la llenó de tanta felicidad, la hizo sentir tan plena que ni ella se lo podía creer; el color intenso y la suavidad en su boca, la transportó a un lugar que Hunter nunca había conocido. Poco a poco, se dio cuenta de que necesitaría más, más y más, hasta que se salió de control y es llevada de emergencia a que le sacaran todos esos pequeños objetos en su estómago que la llenaban de felicidad.
Persecuted.
This is where the martyrdom begins for everyone. She receives accusations from everyone and is offered help that makes her look more like a prisoner. While it is true that Hunter needs support and vigilance so that she does not continue to hurt herself, she was treated with rejection. It seemed that the only people who could understand her were, obviously, her psychiatrist and her caregiver; but as time goes by she realizes that the psychiatrist is also an ally of the family and panics, finding some comfort with her caregiver. In this new episode of anxiety, she relapses again and is again taken to the emergency room.
Perseguida.
Aquí es dónde comienza el martirio para todos. Recibe acusaciones de parte de todos y le ofrecen una ayuda que más bien la hace parecer una prisionera. Si bien es cierto que Hunter necesita apoyo y vigilancia para que no se siga lastimando, era tratada con rechazo. Al parecer las únicas personas que podían entenderla eran, obvio, su psiquiatra y su cuidador; pero al pasar el tiempo se da cuenta de que la psiquiatra también es aliada de la familia y entra en pánico, encontrando un poco de consuelo con su cuidador. En este nuevo episodio de ansiedad, vuelve a recaer y es llevada nuevamente a emergencias.
She runs away!
The family no longer wants to deal with Hunter and force her into a mental institution until she gives birth. Already here one suspects that they do it just to keep the baby and then get rid of her. In complicity with the caretaker, she manages to escape.

Ya la familia no quiere seguir lidiando con Hunter y la obligan a internarse en un psiquiátrico hasta que dé a luz. Ya aquí uno sospecha que lo hacen solo para quedarse con el bebé para luego deshacerse de ella. En complicidad con el cuidador, ella logra escapar.
I imagine you will have many doubts up to this point: Why did Hunter do that, what was she suffering from, and why do I talk about her as if she were the victim in all this? I would like the answer to all the questions to be the simplest one, but the reality is that since it is such a rare disorder and so little talked about, it is difficult to make others understand about Pica Syndrome. Many specialists classify this disorder as an eating disorder, although the truth is that it is a consequence of another mental or behavioral disorder. Why does Hunter suddenly start with this behavior? This condition is usually common during pregnancy due to the famous cravings, but it can also be the result of some trigger in the environment of the person in question, although knowing exactly the reason why the pica occurs, is very uncertain and few specialists have been devoted to investigate it. You can do some research yourselves and in most pages you will find the same definition and description. I suppose that feeling pressured to pretend she was happy in her fictitious world (besides the pregnancy), led her to eat anything that made her feel good. Another important factor in Hunter's life, is that we never know about her family until much later, as she is the product of rape and her family (even though she wants to defend them) always rejected her and pushed her away from their lives.
Me imagino que tendrán muchas dudas hasta este momento: ¿Por qué Hunter hacía eso?, ¿Qué padecía? Y ¿Por qué hablo de ella como si fuera la víctima en todo esto? Quisiera que la respuesta a todas las interrogantes fuera la más sencilla, pero la realidad es que al tratarse de un trastorno tan poco común y tan poco hablado, se hace complicado hacer entender a los demás sobre el Síndrome de Pica. Este trastorno muchos especialistas lo catalogan como trastorno alimenticio, aunque la verdad es que es consecuencia de otro trastorno mental o conductual. ¿Por qué Hunter comienza repentinamente con este comportamiento? Así es esta condición, suele ser habitual durante el embarazo por los famosos antojos, pero también puede ser producto de algún detonante en el entorno de la persona en cuestión, aunque saber exactamente la razón de por qué da la pica, es muy incierto y pocos especialistas se han abocado a investigar al respecto. Pueden hacer una investigación ustedes mismos y en la mayoría de las páginas encontraran la misma definición y descripción. Supongo que al sentirse presionada por fingir que estaba feliz en su mundo ficticio (además del embarazo), la llevó a comerse cualquier cosa que le hiciera sentirse bien. Otro factor importante en la vida de Hunter, es que nunca sabemos sobre su familia sino hasta mucho tiempo después, ya que ella es producto de una violación y su familia (aunque ella quiera defenderlos) siempre la rechazó y apartó de sus vidas.
There are many facets to take away from this film, it is very controversial not only for touching on a subject that almost no one talks about in such a raw and real way, but also for the way Hunter frees herself from everything and everyone; although we don't really know if she will continue with her disorder, it leaves a feeling that now she will be okay (I want to believe that is the case). Haley's performance is impeccable, perhaps many won't like her because they will say she has that bland Bella (Kristen Stewart in Twilight) vibe, but you would have to put yourself in the shoes of those who suffer from this problem to know what it's all about. Little is revealed to us about what year we are in even though we see Hunter's 60's or 70's house and clothing, but we also see the characters with current phones, and maybe it's not that important but it is from my point of view. Perhaps it is a message to tell us that there are still retrograde mentalities in terms of mental problems even today; it may also be a claim to the figure that the woman should (and must) be the one who ran the house, be perfect at all times and always be at her husband's disposal. Sincerely, more than a film to enjoy, it is one to think about, analyze and, why not, investigate about it. This is the only way I could tell you as I always do: "If you haven't seen it, see it, and if you have already seen it, see it again, you can't lose anything".
Son muchas facetas las que se pueden sacar de este film, es muy controversial no solo por tocar un tema del que casi nadie habla de una forma tan cruda y real, sino también por la forma en que Hunter se libera a sí misma de todo y todos; aunque realmente no se sabe si ella continuará con su trastorno, deja una sensación de que ahora ella estará bien (quiero creer que es así). La actuación de Haley es impecable, quizás a muchos no les guste porque dirán que tiene ese aire insípido de Bella (Kristen Stewart en Crepúsculo), pero habría que ponerse en la piel de quienes sufren de este problema para saber de qué se trata. Poco nos revelan sobre en qué año estamos a pesar de que vemos la casa y la vestimenta de Hunter de los años 60 o 70, pero también vemos a los personajes con teléfonos actuales, y tal vez no sea tan importante pero lo es desde mi punto de vista. Quizás es un mensaje para decirnos que aún hay mentalidades retrogradas en cuanto a problemas mentales aun en la actualidad; también puede ser un reclamo a la figura de que la mujer debía (y deba) ser quien llevaba la casa, ser perfecta en todo momento y siempre estar a disposición de su marido. Sinceramente más que una película para disfrutar, es una para pensar, analizar y, ¿Por qué no?, investigar al respecto. Solo así podría decirles como siempre: “Si no la han visto, véanla, y si ya la vieron, vuélvanla a ver, no tiene pérdida de nada”.

Tampoco había escuchado de esta película y si así fue la pase por alto, no puedo creer que no sea tan conocida, siento que trata un tema muy bueno y bastante importante. Aparte con la manera en que describiste este film me dieron muchas ganas de ponerme a verla ya mismo. La verdad que no tenía idea de este trastorno, por eso digo que debería ser más conocida, para que podamos enterarnos de otro tipo de realidades que quizá no están tan visibilizadas y pueden ocurrir. Muy buena recomendación, en cuanto pueda planeo verla.
Realmente es buena, como dije, para conocer y analizar. Este tipo de películas me encantan por eso mismo, y espero que si la veas, le encuentres sentido y te agrade.
An incredible representation that money does not give absolute happiness, there will always be an emptiness. Very good this movie I recommend it, it is a little out of what is usual in movies and presents a unique perspective, thanks for sharing :D

Me encantó!! Yo tampoco tenía idea de esta película! Suena bastante buena y quizás por no ser actores extremadamente conocidos no se ha hecho más viral esta producción, pero definitivamente se nota que es de esas historias que atrapan!!
