How is it possible that being a photographer I have not taken pictures of these two neighbors, in 14 years? I have no idea. But I'm going to tell you some things in a while, which may help frame the moment and the why of these photographs.

I arrived in the neighborhood where I live in 2009, and I got involved in building my house, with a lot of sacrifice. There were two beautiful palm trees on the land and with the pain of my soul I had to look for someone to fell them, because they were going to be too close to the house and this could cause problems in the future.

Future... the future is now, I know, but at that time I didn't see myself today (😅). Oh, I'm getting into a bit of a philosophical field.

In fact, I have spent some time here at home with some cyclones, even a tornado, and I had planted a willow, which was beautiful, and died in one of those weather events. I also planted a flamboyant tree that got huge and I had to cut it because it was going to raise the whole floor of the house. What would have happened to those palm trees, or my house if I had not decided that? The flamboyant tree resisted, but well, the reasons for its felling were others. The point is that I have been thinking for days that in all this time I have been surrounded by people to whom I had not even taken a single photo. And no, I do not get off the subject. Just wait a little.

In the same way that my life changed in these 14 years, as did the configuration of that vacant lot where my modest house now stands, the lives of my neighbors have also had many variations.

For instance:

I introduce you to Máximo. I know some things about him, few, actually, even though he lives in front and we have good relations. It must be because I am a little hermit. But anyway, I know he likes rum, playing dominoes and smoking tobacco. My father when he comes asks him to park the car in his yard, because I had to stop building with the pandemic and I could not make the garage. Yes, I've been building my house for years and I don't finish. Máximo's patio is much larger than mine and he has a space full of butterfly flowers and he gave me some bulbs to plant here at home. He was also one of those who told me not to put the flamboyant tree in the garden, but I am too stubborn. I don't think Máximo has aged that much.

Lately with this Hive blog I have become more of a photographer (hahaha, what do I say?, it must be that it is late and I already start talking nonsense)... no, what I mean is that now I go around taking pictures of my life and what surrounds me much more than before, and even I portrait the sunsets and the trend has been to specialization too 😂.

That's why I was carrying my camera around when I found my neighbor doing one of the usual tasks here: mowing the law. I asked him to let me take some pictures and he gladly accepted. By the way we had a little chat.

This is hard, I hate mowing the lawn - he said - and I laughed because I do too. I used to do it myself with a homemade machine that I bought from another neighbor.

Let me explain.

It was a device with a Russian washing machine motor. And sometimes it gave me some shocks, which I was afraid of getting stuck to it one day, and electrocuting myself while I was at it. What a nice thing that would have been, right?! 😂 Now I pay a man who dedicates himself to do so, although I have two machines now, electric and original, which cut the grass with a nylon cord. As you can see, my life has changed in the sense that now I am more lazy (jjj) 😑

Well, yes. Máximo thinks the same of me.

We were in that, and talking about his Pekingese dog, who gave birth when I saw Alain coming down the road.

I don't know what happened to his cows. Or the milk from his cows because I used to buy some liters of milk twice a week until one day he told me that he could no longer sell more because they were barely giving milk and the little they got from milking was for his family. But now - I think - he no longer has cows, or I am distracted and that is why I do not see them, but I do know that he has many dogs and when I pass in front of his house they bark at me and there is a big yellow one that comes up to me a little defiantly and makes me a little nervous. I tell him, hey, get back there, I have skinny legs and a bite from you is not going to be very funny. And I also shout at Alain: Alain mijo, talk to your dog and tell him I'm harmless.

Then he saw me with the camera and asked me if I knew anything about photography 😆. Can you see what I'm saying?, I never took my camera out in the neighborhood. I've only gone to take pictures of my neighbor's children at their house. How could he know that my job is this?

He chatted a little with Máximo and continued on his way. He said he was in a hurry because he had to pick up his daughter from school.

And so, that's how I took these photos. Simple. The light was nice, I like this documentary style and if you allow me, I'll leave them under consideration for the #Monomad Challenge.

¿Cómo es posible que siendo fotógrafa, en 14 años no haya retratado a estos dos vecinos? Ni idea. Pero les voy a contar algunas cosas en breve, que tal vez sirvan para enmarcar el momento y el porqué de estas fotografías.

Llegué al barrio donde vivo en 2009, y me enfrasqué en construir mi casa, con mucho sacrificio. Había dos palmas hermosas en el terreno y con el dolor de mi alma tuve que buscar quien las talara, porque iban a quedar demasiado pegadas a la casa y esto podía ocasionar problemas en el futuro.

Futuro... el futuro es ahora, lo sé, pero en aquel momento yo no me ví hoy (😅). Oh, estoy entrando en un campo un poco filosófico.

De hecho, he pasado aquí en casa algunos ciclones, hasta un tornado, y había sembrado un sauce, que estaba hermoso, y murió en uno de esos eventos climatológicos. También sembré un flamboyán que se puso inmenso y lo tuve que cortar porque me iba a levantar todo el piso de la casa. ¿Qué habría sido de aquellas palmas, o de mi casa si no hubiese decidido eso? El flamboyán resistió, pero bueno, las razones de su tala fueron otras. La cuestión es que llevo días pensando que en todo este tiempo he estado rodeada de personas a las que no les había hecho ni una sola foto. Y no, no me salgo del tema. Solo esperen un poco.

De la misma manera en que cambió mi vida en estos 14 años, como también lo hizo la configuración de aquel terreno baldío donde ahora se levanta mi modesta casa, la vida de mis vecinos también ha tenido muchísimas variaciones.

Por ejemplo:

Les presento a Máximo. De él sé algunas cosas, pocas, en realidad, aunque vive al frente y tenemos buenas relaciones. Debe ser porque soy un poco ermitaña. Pero en fin, sé que le gusta el ron, jugar dominó y que fuma tabaco. Mi padre cuando viene le pide guardar el auto en su patio, porque yo tuve que parar de construir con la pandemia y no he podido hacer el garaje. Sí, llevo años construyendo mi casa y no termino. El patio de Máximo es muchísimo más grande que el mío y tiene un espacio lleno de flores de mariposas y me regaló unos cuantos bulbos para que sembrara aquí en casa. Él también fue uno de los que me dijo que no pusiera el flamboyán en el jardín, pero soy demasiado obstinada. Creo que Máximo no ha envejecido tanto.

Últimamente con esto del blog de Hive me he vuelto más fotógrafa (jajaja, ¿qué digo?, debe ser que es tarde y ya me pongo a hablar tonterías)... no, lo que quiero decir es que ahora ando haciendo fotos de mi vida y lo que me rodea mucho más que antes, y hasta retrato los atardeceres y la tendencia ha sido a la especialización también 😂.

Por eso andaba yo con mi cámara en ristre cuando encontré a mi vecino en una de las tareas habituales aquí: chapear. Le pedí que me dejara hacerle unas cuantas fotografías y aceptó gustoso. De paso tuvimos una pequeña charla.

Esto está duro, qué mal me cae chapear -dijo- y yo reí porque a mí también. Antes lo hacía yo misma con una máquina criolla que le compré a otro vecino.

Les explico.

Era un artefacto con un motor de lavadora rusa. Y a veces me daba unos corrientazos, que yo tenía miedo de quedarme un día pegada a ella, y ya de paso electrocutada. ¡Qué bonito, hubiese sido eso, ¿verdad?! 😂 Ahora le pago a un hombre que se dedica a chapear, aunque tengo dos máquinas ahora, eléctricas y originales, de las que cortan la yerba con un cordel de nylon. Ya pueden ver que mi vida ha cambiado en el sentido que ahora soy más vaga (jjj) 😑

Pues sí. Máximo opina lo mismo de mí.

En esas estábamos, y hablando de que su perrita pequinés parió cuando vi que venía Alain por el camino.

No sé qué se hicieron sus vacas. O la leche de sus vacas porque yo solía comprarle algunos litros de leche dos veces por semana hasta que un día me informó que ya no podía vender más porque apenas estaban dando leche y la poca que obtenía de los ordeños era para su familia. Pero ahora -creo- que ya no tiene vacas, o soy despistada y por eso no las veo, pero sí sé que tiene muchos perros y cuando paso por delante de su casa me ladran y hay uno amarillo grande que se me acerca un poco desafiante y me pone algo nerviosa. Yo le digo, oye, tú échate para allá que tengo las piernas flacas y una mordidita tuya no va a ser muy graciosa que digamos. Y le grito a Alain también: Alain mijo, habla con tu perro y dile que soy inofensiva.

Entonces me vio con la cámara y me preguntó si yo le sabía a eso de la fotografía 😆. ¿Ven lo que les digo?, es que no saqué mi cámara jamás en el barrio. Solo he ido a retratar a los hijos de mi vecina en su casa. ¿Cómo podía saber él que mi trabajo es este?

Jaraneó un poco con Máximo y siguió su camino. Dijo que andaba apurado porque tenía que recoger a su hija en la escuela.

Y así, fue como hice estas fotos. Sencillo. La luz estaba bonita, me gusta este estilo documental y si me lo permiten, se las dejo en consideración para el #Monomad Challenge.
