Hello, cinema fans. Today we’re back with yet another movie to continue this special series dedicated to comedy, featuring a rather popular and unique leading man. It’s a movie that’s been completely forgotten—at least by most people, except me, of course. Bulletproof is directed by Ernest Dickerson and stars Adam Sandler and Damon Wayans. Get ready for what is surely the worst buddy cop movie in history.

Una película que quedó en el completo olvido, al menos para la mayoría de personas, excepto yo, por supuesto. Plot
The movie begins by showing us what appears to be a large mansion from the inside, ending at the entrance where two men are trying to steal a sports car. When they hear the alarm, they both speed off in the car while trying to escape from a police patrol through the city. The Black man driving the car calls himself Rock Keats, and his loudmouthed, troublemaking partner is named Archie Moses. The two seem to be good friends, but the truth is that Rock is an undercover police officer trying to befriend Archie so he can turn him in to his boss.

La película inicia mostrándonos lo que parece ser una gran mansión desde el interior, terminando en la entrada donde dos hombres intentan robarse un auto deportivo. Al escuchar la alarma, ambos se van corriendo con el auto mientras intentan escapar de una patrulla de policías por la ciudad. El hombre de color que va manejando el auto se hace llamar Rock Keats y su compañero gritón y busca pleitos se llama Archie Moses. Ambos parecen ser buenos amigos, pero la verdad es que Rock es un agente de policía encubierto que intenta hacerse amigo de Archie para que lo lleve ante su jefe.

Honestly, after watching this movie for the last time, I had serious doubts about whether or not to talk about it. Bulletproof is one of those “guilty pleasures” that I’m sure everyone has when it comes to movies. I say this because it’s the worst of the worst when it comes to direction, screenplay, story, characters, and so on. The only thing that saved it was the excellent duo of Adam Sandler and Damon Wayans. It’s already hilarious enough to see Sandler playing himself in a cop movie or something like that, and adding the Wayans brother to the mix gives it a unique twist.
Also, this was one of those movies that would air very occasionally on cable TV at my house ever since I was a kid. So, just like the vast majority of Adam Sandler movies, Bulletproof is also part of my childhood and adolescence. Saying this might sound worse than you’d imagine, since watching a movie with adult humor like the one we have here is NOT AT ALL recommended—especially not with kids around, seriously. I have to admit that Sandler ruined my childhood, just like horror movies did.
Sinceramente, luego de haber visto por última vez esta película, me entraron unas fuertes dudas de si hablar de ella o no. Bulletproof es uno de esos “gustos culposos” que seguramente todo el mundo tiene al momento de ver películas. Lo digo porque es lo peor de lo peor en cuanto respecta a dirección, guión, historia, personajes, etc. Lo único que lo hizo salvable es la excelente dupla que hacen Adam Sandler y Damon Wayans. Ya de por sí me da mucha risa ver a Sandler ser él mismo en una película de policías y cosas por el estilo, la suma del hermano Wayans a esta fórmula le da un toque único.
También que este era de esas películas que muy de vez en cuando se transmitían en la televisión por cable de mi casa desde que era un niño. Así que, al igual que la gran mayoría de películas de Adam Sandler, Bulletproof también forma parte de mi infancia y adolescencia. Decir esto puede sonar peor de lo que te imaginas ya que ver una película con un humor para adultos como lo es esta que tenemos aquí no es PARA NADA recomendable verla y menos con niños presentes, de verdad. Debo admitir que Sandler destruyó mi infancia, al igual que lo hicieron las películas de terror.

But anyway, getting back to the movie itself, despite all the bad things that can be said about Bulletproof—which is a lot—I think it has one of the most entertaining and emotional openings you’ll find in this kind of buddy cop movie, or whatever you want to call it. The first twenty minutes of the movie set the stage for everything that happens between the main characters: Jack Carter, who’s posing as Rock Keats, and Archie Moses. After watching them steal a sports car, the detective manages to gain Moses’s trust and tells him about his other job.
Moses tells Keats that he’s the right-hand man of Frank Colton, a drug dealer who launders large sums of money through his car dealership. He tells him about a quick deal they’re going to make and takes him to meet Colton, who greets him with suspicion. Next, we see Detective Carter preparing to “pull off the heist,” but everything goes wrong during the deal, and suddenly Keats is shot in the forehead by Moses, who was knocked over by a tow truck. All of this looks much better than it sounds, especially since the movie doesn’t slow down, delivering one action scene after another.
Pero bueno, volviendo a la película como tal, a pesar de todo lo malo que se pueda decir de Bulletproof -que es mucho-, considero que tiene una de las introducciones más entretenidas y emotivas que se pueden encontrar en este tipo de películas de parejas policías o como se llame. Los primeros veinte minutos de la película sirven para darnos contexto de todo lo que ocurre entre los protagonistas: Jack Carter quien se hace pasar por Rock Keats y Archie Moses. Luego de verlos robar un auto deportivo, el detective logra ganarse la confianza de Moses y le habla de su otro trabajo.
Moses le cuenta a Keats que es la mano derecha de Frank Colton, un distribuidor de droga que blanquea grandes sumas de dinero en su concesionario de autos. Le habla de un pronto negocio que harán y lo lleva ante Colton quien lo recibe de manera desconfiada. Acto seguido vemos al detective Carter prepararse para “dar el golpe”, pero todo sale mal en el negocio y de pronto Keats recibe un disparo en la frente de parte de Moses quien fue empujado por una grúa. Todo esto se ve muchísimo mejor de lo que suena, sobre todo porque la película no se detiene al darnos una escena tras otra de acción.

While it has many cuts, jumps, and unnecessary plot twists, the film’s pacing is just right for any action movie. Of course, that’s if we set aside the adult comedy elements that run through much of the film—it’s hard to watch without feeling embarrassed or uncomfortable in one way or another. The movie is full of dark humor, sexual jokes, nude scenes, racist jokes, and so on. Let’s remember that those were different times, and the humor back then was nothing like what we see in today’s heavily censored movies.
But despite all that, I won’t deny that whenever I watch Bulletproof, I have a great time thanks to Adam Sandler’s charisma as an actor. We also see him take on a role that we’re not used to seeing in his conventional comedy films. If we were to categorize Sandler’s role in this movie, it would be that of the antagonist who, over the course of the film, gradually transforms into the hero or the protagonist’s best sidekick. Because, despite everything, Wayans is the one who steals the show.
Si bien tiene muchos cortes, saltos, giros de trama innecesarios; el ritmo que tiene la película es el adecuado para cualquier película de acción. Claro, esto si dejamos de lado el tema de la comedia para adultos que tiene en gran parte de la película donde es difícil verla sin pasar vergüenza o sentirse inquieto de alguna u otra manera. La película tiene sus muchas escenas con chistes negros, chistes sexuales, escenas de desnudos, chistes racistas, etc. Recordemos que eran otras épocas y el humor de aquel entonces no era para nada lo que vemos ahora todo censurado en el cine.
Pero a pesar de todo esto, no voy a negar que siempre que veo Bulletproof me divierto en gran medida por el carisma que tiene Adam Sandler al momento de actuar. También que lo vemos realizar un papel que normalmente nunca estamos acostumbrados a ver en sus películas de comedia convencionales. Si de alguna manera podríamos catalogar el papel que realiza Sandler en esta película sería el del antagonista que a lo largo de la cinta lo vemos convertirse poco a poco en el héroe o el mejor compañero del protagonista. Porque si, a pesar de todo, vemos que el protagonismo principal se lo lleva Wayans.

I won't deny that Damon Wayans did a good job acting here—quite the opposite, actually. His lead role as the detective going through a terrible time in his life that changes him forever and who reunites with someone from his past is solid. We see that he fits the typical mold of every protagonist in these cop movies and the like. The entertaining part comes from the comparison or contrast between his character and Sandler’s, who plays the typical small-time criminal trying to survive by any means necessary.
Despite having a simple role, Adam Sandler manages to stand out quite well, creating perfect chemistry with Damon Wayans. I won’t say it’s the best duo he’s ever formed in his entire career, but it is pretty special—aside from all the trash this movie contains. Starting with the completely absurd plot, where much of the movie consists of watching Carter drag Moses through the Texas desert—or wherever this movie was filmed—as they haphazardly escape from the dozens of heavily armed thugs who are hunting them down.
No voy a negar que Damon Wayans hizo un buen trabajo actuando aquí, más bien todo lo contrario. Su papel principal como el detective que vive un momento terrible en su vida que lo cambia para siempre y tiene su reencuentro con alguien del pasado está bien. Vemos que cumple con el típico rol de todo protagonista en estas películas de policías y cosas del estilo. Lo entretenido viene con la comparativa o el contraste que tiene su personaje con el de Sandler que es el típico criminal de poca monta que intenta sobrevivir de cualquier manera.
A pesar de tener un papel simple, Adam Sandler logra destacarse bastante bien logrando crear una química perfecta con Damon Wayans. No diré que es la mejor dupla que ha hecho en toda su carrera, pero sí es bastante especial, fuera de toda la basura que tiene esta película. Empezando por la trama toda absurda donde gran parte de la película es ver a Carter llevarse a Moses a rastras por todo el desierto de Texas o donde sea que se haya grabado esta película mientras escapan de forma fortuita de las decenas de matones armados hasta los dientes que los están cazando.

As you can see, the movie is packed with an absurd number of clichés typical of any action or cop movie. Predictable plot twists, forgettable supporting characters—except when they interact in a special way with the main characters—and the incredible luck the main characters have in surviving almost everything. Well, it’s not for nothing that the movie is called “Bulletproof.” But the way it’s portrayed in this movie is pretty absurd—seriously, how on earth do you survive a shot to the forehead?
The movie is literally made so you can completely switch off your brain and just watch it, no matter how poorly directed and produced it is. Because even in terms of its audiovisual aspects, it has its merits too. I’m not complaining about the cinematography, since in a way it’s somewhat creative with its shots and cuts. Nor am I complaining about the color palette or the use of light and shadow. Although I do have some complaints about the sets or backgrounds in some of the film’s scenes—it’s very obvious that they’re fake. The visual effects are fine, as are the sound effects. Though I like the film’s soundtrack even better.
Personally, I give it a 7/10 rating as an action-comedy.
Como ven, la película posee una cantidad absurda de clichés típicos de toda película de acción y policías. Giros de trama predecibles, personajes secundarios fáciles de olvidar -excepto cuando interactúan de forma especial con los protagonistas- y la afortunada suerte que tienen los protagonistas que sobreviven a casi todo. Bueno, no por nada la película se llama “a prueba de balas”. Pero es que la forma en la que lo vemos en esta película es bastante absurdo, de verdad, ¿cómo rayos sobrevives de un disparo en la frente?
La película está literalmente hecha para que desconectes tu cerebro por completo y la veas sin importar lo mal dirigida y producida que está. Porque incluso en lo que respecta a algo audiovisual tiene sus detalles también. No me quejo de su fotografía ya que de cierta manera es algo creativa con los planos y cortes que tiene. Tampoco me quejo de la paleta de colores y el uso de luces y sombras. Aunque sí tengo mis quejas en lo que respecta a los escenarios o los fondos de algunas escenas de la película que se notan mucho que son falsos. Los efectos visuales están bien, al igual que los efectos de sonido. Aunque me gusta más la banda sonora que tiene la película.
Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 7/10 en lo que respecta al género de acción y comedia.
