Plot
The anime begins by showing us a woman who receives an unexpected phone call and, after answering it, gets ready to leave. She arrives at what appears to be a hospital, where she is greeted by her mother and a young woman who is asleep beside her. Her mother asks her to please take care of the young woman, after telling her that her older sister and her husband were in a serious accident and that it’s not yet clear whether they’re okay or not. The next thing we see is a wake where we hear people talking about the loss and discussing the daughter—the drowsy young woman who now appears completely expressionless and emotionless.

El anime inicia mostrándonos a una mujer quien recibe una llamada inesperada y, luego de atenderla, se alista para irse. Llega a lo que parece ser un hospital donde la recibe su madre y una joven que está dormida al lado de ella. Su madre le pide que le haga el favor de encargarse de ella, luego de contarle que su hermana mayor y su esposo sufrieron un grave accidente y que aún no se confirma si están bien o no. And I’m not exaggerating when I say this, since its opening premise is the tragic news of the death of our protagonists’ close relatives. In other words, aside from tackling heavy and uncommon themes for a conventional anime of the season, it hits the ground running in a very unconventional way.
Journal with Witch is arguably a work that uniquely addresses sensitive topics such as the loss of a loved one, the lack of—or search for—identity, the importance of expressing your feelings, and the need to have a purpose in life. Since it’s been a while since I first watched it when it aired, I might have trouble remembering all 13 episodes clearly. But at its core, it’s an anime that tells the story of a rather unusual couple trying to live together while finding a way to accept loss, grief, and change.
Esta fue la sorpresa, no solo de la temporada de invierno, sino de todo este año en lo que respecta al género de drama. Así es, estamos ante un anime de drama muy diferente y especial a cualquier otro anime que hayamos visto antes. Y no es una exageración esto que les estoy diciendo ya que su premisa inicial es la trágica noticia de la muerte de los familiares cercanos de nuestras protagonistas. Es decir, que aparte de tratar temas fuertes y poco comunes para un anime convencional de la temporada, empieza con todo y de una forma muy fuera de lo convencional.
Journal with Witch es posiblemente una obra que trata de manera única temas delicados como lo pueden ser la pérdida de un ser amado, la falta o búsqueda de la identidad, la importancia de expresar tus sentimientos y la necesidad de tener un propósito en tu vida. Debido al tiempo que ha pasado desde que lo llegué a ver en emisión posiblemente me cueste recordar bien todos sus 13 episodios. Pero en esencia es un anime que nos relata la historia de una pareja un tanto particular que intenta convivir juntos mientras buscan la forma de aceptar la pérdida, el dolor y el cambio.

On one hand, we have Maiko Kōdai, a writer who has serious trouble socializing, and on the other, we have Asa Takumi, a high school girl who recently lost her parents in an accident. At first, we see the two women meet and begin living together in Maiko’s apartment; until then, Maiko had lived alone and tended to spend much of her time shut away in her room writing on her laptop. She isn’t a sociable person, as you’ve already read above, but aside from that, she’s someone who prefers solitude to living with someone else.
Even so, she decides to take Asa in and take responsibility for her care—not only because she’s her niece, but also because she saw how the rest of the family treated her at her late parents’ wake. As a woman who doesn’t mince words, Maiko doesn’t get along easily with Asa, especially when she notices that Asa shares some of her mother’s personality—the writer’s late older sister. On the other hand, we also see Asa coping with the loss of her parents in a rather peculiar way: dissociating, sleeping more than usual during the day, and displaying occasional outbursts of anger.

For example, there are certain scenes that occasionally offer a somewhat graphic or vivid depiction of some of the situations or emotions our protagonists are experiencing.
This is especially true of the eccentric Asa Takumi, whom we see from the very beginning experiencing episodes of disorientation or mental absence where she imagines herself in a desert. What’s interesting about these strange and peculiar scenes is the way they visually represent the different themes the anime explores, such as loss, loneliness, difficulties in understanding others, and the search for happiness. That’s the beauty of this anime: it seeks to convey, in a unique audiovisual way, what anyone would normally feel when going through something similar to what these protagonists are experiencing.
Algo que no les dije al principio es que Journal with Witch no busca ser un anime para todo el público, mucho menos para un público muy infantil o adolescente. Ya con solo leer su premisa es evidente que dichos temas densos que tratar son ya para gente mayor, jóvenes adultos (Josei) o adultos como tal ya. Pero no solo tenemos eso, sino que el ritmo y la forma en la que está hecha este anime busca transmitir algo auténtico, más allá de querer contarnos una historia ya conocida. Por ejemplo, hay ciertas escenas que de vez en cuando buscan ofrecernos una visión un tanto gráfica o ilustrativa de algunas situaciones o emociones que viven nuestras protagonistas.
Principalmente la extraña Asa Takumi con la que vemos desde un principio experimentar ciertos episodios de desfase o ausencia mental donde se imagina estando en un desierto. Lo interesante de estas escenas extrañas y peculiares es la forma en la que representan de manera visual los diferentes temas que trata como lo es la pérdida, la soledad o los problemas de comprensión y la búsqueda de la felicidad. Es lo bueno que tiene este anime que busca transmitir de manera audiovisual y única lo que normalmente cualquiera siente cuando vive algo de lo que viven estas protagonistas.

Obviously, only those who have personally experienced the loss of a loved one will be able to fully understand everything this work conveys. Personally, I couldn’t quite relate to the very particular way Asa Takumi coped with and came to terms with her loss in this story, for example. But that’s surely because I’ve never experienced anything like that in my life, so I’m in no position to speak on this. There’s also the fact that Asa’s relationship with her parents is quite interesting to observe and analyze in this anime.
And it’s not just about seeing Asa’s upbringing and relationship with her parents, but also everything she processes, learns, and manages to adapt to in her life after her loss. For example, there’s Maiko herself, who also shows us how to cope with and come to terms with the loss of a family member who wasn’t particularly close to her (despite being her older sister). We also see how she maintains her friendships after the loss and the changes she’s undergone in her life and personality. At first, we see Asa zoning out all the time; then we see her not understanding anything people say; and finally, she begins to express all her feelings.
Obviamente, solo los que han experimentado en carne propia la pérdida de un ser querido lograrán entender todo lo que transmite esta obra. Yo en lo personal no pude compaginar del todo con la forma tan particular de afrontar y asimilar la pérdida que tuvo Asa Takumi en esta historia, por ejemplo. Pero seguramente es porque nunca he experimentado nada parecido en mi vida, así que no soy nadie para hablar de esto. También está el hecho de que la relación que tenían Asa con sus padres es un tanto interesante de ver y analizar en este anime.
Y no solo es ver la crianza y relación que tenía Asa con sus padres, sino todo lo que ella asimila, aprende y logra adaptar en su vida luego de su pérdida. Por ejemplo tenemos a la misma Maiko quien también nos enseña cómo afrontar y asimilar dicha pérdida de un familiar no tan querido (a pesar de haber sido su hermana mayor), por su lado. También vemos cómo mantiene a sus amistades luego de la pérdida y el cambio que ha tenido en su vida y personalidad. Al principio vemos a Asa disociar todo el tiempo, luego la vemos no entender nada de lo que dice la gente y por último pasa a demostrar todos sus sentimientos.

Let’s just say that this is one of the most notable aspects of this anime—not only because of the way they meet and begin to interact from the very first episode, but also because of how it shows us that they both literally live in two very different worlds. So the idea of “living together” is just a figure of speech compared to what we actually see for the most part.
Since Maiko isn’t like most adult women her age, she has a very unique way of life. She hardly ever socializes with Asa—they barely even see each other. Maiko spends her time locked in her room writing, while Asa, for her part, tries to get on with her life despite feeling completely alone and emotionally and mentally disoriented. The fascinating way this anime portrays Asa’s psychological state is also captivating, as it illustrates the different stages of her grief, which is equally compelling.
Lo fascinante no es solo el caso de Asa y su manera de afrontar y asimilar la pérdida sino también la relación tan particular que se desarrolla entre ella y Maiko. Digamos que esto último es uno de los puntos más destacables de este anime, no solo por la forma en la que se conocen y empiezan a tratarse desde el primer episodio, sino por la manera en la que nos muestran que ambas viven literalmente en dos mundos muy diferentes. Ultimately, this anime delves so deeply into such heavy themes that it’s beyond my ability to explain them in a way you’d understand.
Pero bueno, volviendo a la relación que tiene Asa con Maiko, el anime no busca darnos la típica relación de familiares queridos o mejores amigas que normalmente uno esperaría ver aquí. No, aquí vemos constantemente cómo ambas se desentienden entre sí, no congenian casi nunca e incluso llegan a discutir o molestarse por sus maneras tan diferentes de pensar y ver las cosas. Al final, no es una amistad la que vemos desarrollarse, sino una relación un tanto más particular y especial a la vez. Esto en lo personal me gusta mucho ya que no vemos personajes genéricos en ningún momento.
Aquí todos los personajes que aparecen son parte de un reflejo de la realidad misma, la cual no es tan color de rosas y brillante como nos lo pintan en las películas o en las series. No, la realidad misma es que no siempre tendremos el apoyo de nuestros familiares, que la vida misma siempre puede llegar a arrebatarnos aquello que pensamos es valioso y que hay relaciones rotas o mal hechas que son imposibles de reparar o superar sin importar lo que pase. Al final, este anime profundiza mucho en temas bastante densos como para que alguien como yo les intente explicar de una forma que me puedan entender.

The sound effects are also fascinating, as they help—along with the soundtrack—to heighten the emotion of each scene.
Personally, I give it a well-deserved 10/10 rating in the drama and slice-of-life genres.

Los efectos de sonido también son fascinantes ya que ayudan, junto con la banda sonora que tiene, a elevar la emoción de cada escena.
Personalmente, le doy una merecida calificación de 10/10 en lo que respecta al género de drama y slice of life.
