Hello, anime fans. We’re continuing with more priceless gems that aired earlier this year and that I personally found quite entertaining. This time, it’s about the return of an anime that serves as both an alternate story and a direct prequel to the famous action and superhero series known as My Hero Academia by Kōhei Horikoshi. Based on the manga series of the same name written by Hideyuki Furuhashi and illustrated by Betten Court, Vigilantes is an animated adaptation produced by the studio Bones Film.

Esta vez trata del regreso de un anime que sirve como una historia alternativa y a la vez como una precuela directa de la famosa obra de acción y superhéroes conocida como My Hero Academia de Kōhei Horikoshi. Plot
The second season begins shortly after the events at the end of the first season, with our young protagonist, Koichi Haimawari, accompanying the young independent idol, Pop★Step, as she heads to Osaka for an idol showcase to which she was invited. As they board the bullet train bound for their destination, a minor oversight causes Koichi to miss the train. However, just as the train begins to move, our protagonist manages to get on—but in a peculiar way, as he attaches himself to the train using his telekinetic ability.

Despite the minor details and complaints surrounding this animated adaptation, there’s no denying that its conclusion was one of the most satisfying in the history of modern shōnen anime.
Its blend of action, comedy, science fiction, and drama—coupled with a fascinating story and unforgettable characters—made My Hero Academia one of my favorite anime series of the past decade. A pesar de los pequeños detalles y quejas que hubo con esta adaptación animada, no se puede negar que su cierre fue de los más gratificantes que se han visto en toda la historia del anime shōnen de la actualidad.

Now, watching the animated adaptation of this prequel/spin-off of My Hero Academia called Vigilantes gave me a sense of freshness and nostalgia, right after the main series’ finale. Don’t expect a grand, deep, and epic story in this spin-off—it’s just an alternate story set before the main storyline, featuring other characters as protagonists who are just as charismatic. I already reviewed the first season of Vigilantes last year and made it very clear just how much this story entertained me.
Obviously, for this second season, which aired earlier this year, I was hoping to see more thrilling moments, epic action, and incredible villains. And while it delivered on all of that, I feel like this second season didn’t have the same level of epicness or impact when compared to the previous season. Of course, we’re talking about the period following the final season of My Hero Academia, which was one of the most epic things we saw last year. It’s clear that the level of hype was through the roof going into this second season of Vigilantes.
Ahora, ver la adaptación animada de esta precuela/spin-off que sacaron de My Hero Academia llamada Vigilantes me dió un aire de frescura y nostalgia, justo después de dicho final de la adaptación principal. No esperes ver una historia grandiosa, profunda y épica en este spin-off, solo es una historia alternativa basada en una época anterior a la historia principal, con otros personajes como protagonistas que son igual de carismáticos. Ya le hice una reseña a la primera temporada de Vigilantes el año pasado y dejé bien claro lo mucho que me entretuvo esta historia.
Es evidente que para esta segunda temporada que se emitió a principios de este año esperaba ver más momentos fascinantes, acción épica y villanos increíbles. Y si bien ha cumplido con todo esto, siento que no tuvo el mismo nivel de epicidad o impacto esta segunda temporada si la comparamos con la temporada anterior. Claro, estamos hablando de después de la temporada final de My Hero Academia la cual fue de lo más épico que se pudo ver el año pasado. Es evidente que el nivel de HYPE estuvo en las nubes al ver esta segunda temporada de Vigilantes.

Maybe that’s why it didn’t have the same impact on the audience when it aired, even though we had a fascinating villain in this second season: Scarred Man. Nothing against the villain from the first season, but she definitely can’t compare to this guy, who possesses the power of “Acceleration”—a power that immediately reminded me of DC Comics’ Flash. Imagine having the Flash as an enemy in a world full of professional heroes. What’s fascinating about this anime is how it turns any ordinary event into complete chaos.
I really like this anime’s plot because it completely breaks away from the educational and professional themes of the main series and delves deeper into the daily lives of young people and ordinary individuals in a city that’s frequently attacked by “villains”—who are actually people with powers mutated by a drug called Trigger. What’s interesting about all this is seeing how a young college student with a seemingly useless ability decides to become an illegal hero alongside a teenage idol named Pop★Step.
Tal vez fue por eso que no llegó a tener el mismo impacto en la audiencia durante su emisión, aún cuando tuvimos a un villano fascinante en esta segunda temporada como lo es Scarred Man. Nada en contra con la villana de la primera temporada, pero definitivamente no se le puede comparar con este tipo que posee como don la “Aceleración”, un don que me recordó fácilmente a Flash de DC Comics. Imagínate tener a Flash como enemigo en un mundo donde hay muchos héroes profesionales. Lo fascinante de este anime es cómo hace de cualquier evento común un completo caos.
La trama de este anime me gusta bastante ya que se desliga por completo de todo el tema educativo y profesional de la serie principal y se adentra más a la vida diaria de jóvenes e individuos comunes y corrientes de una ciudad donde frecuentemente es atacada por “villanos” que en realidad es gente con dones mutados por una droga llamada Trigger. Lo interesante de todo esto es ver cómo un joven universitario con un don aparentemente inútil decide convertirse en un héroe ilegal junto con una idol adolescente llamada Pop★Step.

By the way, we don’t see Knuckleduster in this second season—or at least not at first. Here, we see him taking on more of a detective or avenger role as he investigates the whereabouts and origins of the current villain, Scarred Man. Despite having accomplished his main objective in the previous season, our big guy decides to step away from the team of independent heroes he formed with Koichi and Pop to undertake a much larger side mission. What’s interesting is how everything comes together in this second season, and in the process, we discover more about this character’s past.
This is something I really loved about this anime—and especially about this second season: its storytelling and how the stories connect with some well-known and relevant supporting characters in the series. Because aside from Knuckleduster, we also learn about the past of another character who’s quite familiar to those of us who’ve watched My Hero Academia: Eraser Head. There’s an entire arc dedicated to his past as a student, which is one of the most fascinating things this season had to offer. We also get to enjoy the excellent character development this anime has to offer.
Por cierto, en esta segunda temporada no vemos a Knuckleduster, o al menos no al principio. Aquí lo vemos ocupar un papel más de detective o vengador al investigar el paradero y origen del villano actual Scarred Man. A pesar de haber cumplido con su objetivo principal en la temporada anterior, nuestro grandulón decide alejarse del equipo de héroes independientes que formó con Koichi y Pop para realizar una misión secundaria mucho más grande. Lo interesante es cómo todo se conecta en esta segunda temporada y a su vez descubrimos algo más del pasado de este personaje.
Esto es algo que me gustó muchísimo de este anime y más de esta segunda temporada: su forma de contar historias y cómo estás se conectan con algunos personajes secundarios conocidos y relevantes de esta obra. Porque aparte de Knuckleduster, también conocemos el pasado de otro personaje bastante conocido para los que vimos My Hero Academia: Eraser Head. Hay todo un arco dedicado a su pasado como estudiante, lo cual es de lo más fascinante que nos dió esta temporada. También tenemos los excelentes desarrollos de personajes que tiene este anime.

We have the standout case of Captain Celebrity, who, when we first met him, was just a minor character pretending to be a screen hero, but who is really just a fame-seeker and womanizer. But in this second season, we see him go through a pretty fascinating character arc by the end—complete with a good beating he takes. But anyway, he’s not the only one who undergoes some development this season, since our protagonist also manages to change a bit—or at least he does so by finding new ways to use his quirk, which makes him more useful than before.
Of course, we also have several “crossovers,” such as appearances and cameos by familiar characters from My Hero Academia. In particular, the great All Might makes an appearance only at the very end, and that was more than enough to show us why he’s the number one hero. But he’s not the only one who manages to impress us with a display of incredible power and skill this season. Knuckleduster also really stands out, even without any Quirk, proving just how amazing he is.
Tenemos el caso resaltante de Captain Celebrity quien al principio que lo conocimos era todo un personaje secundario que simulaba ser un héroe de pantalla, pero que en realidad es solo un busca fama y mujeriego. Pero en esta segunda temporada lo vemos atravesar por un desarrollo de personaje bastante fascinante al final con todo y una buena paliza que le dan. Pero bueno, él no es el único que pasa por cierto desarrollo en esta temporada, ya que también nuestro protagonista logra cambiar un poco, o al menos lo hace con sus nuevas aplicaciones de su don que lo hace más útil que antes.
Por supuesto, también tenemos varios “crossovers” como lo son las apariciones y participaciones de personajes ya conocidos de My Hero Academia. En especial el gran All Might quien hace una aparición solamente al final y fue más que suficiente para demostrarnos por qué es el héroe número uno. Pero bueno, no es el único que logra impresionarnos con una demostración de poder y habilidad impresionantes en esta temporada. Knuckleduster también logra destacarse bastante aún sin ningún don, demostrándonos así lo grandioso que es.

Last but not least, let’s talk about the audiovisual aspects of this anime. Horikoshi and the creator of this spin-off are incredibly lucky that their works are being animated by the same great studio, Bones—it’s truly admirable. Only the studio that made My Hero Academia a hit with its first seasons is capable of properly adapting this alternate story set in the same universe. I won’t deny that where they really shine is in the action scenes, displays of power, chases, and the like.
The vibrant and varied color palette, the distinctive character designs, and the art and animation style—similar to that of superhero comics—are top-notch. The visual effects, attention to detail, and fluidity are also aspects of this anime that I find quite fascinating. I also really like how they highlight the epic and dramatic moments—as well as the comical and everyday ones—with a perfect blend of cool, dark tones with shadows and warm, bright tones with good lighting. The sound effects are also excellent, though they’re nothing compared to this anime’s soundtrack.
Personally, I give it a 9/10 rating in terms of the action, superhero, drama, and comedy genres.
Por último, pero no menos importante, hablemos del apartado audiovisual que tiene este anime. La enorme suerte que tienen Horikoshi y el creador de este spin-off de que sus obras sean animadas por el mismo gran estudio Bones es digno de admirarse, la verdad. Solo el mismo estudio que hizo grande a My Hero Academia con sus primeras temporadas es el único capaz de adaptar correctamente esta obra alternativa del mismo universo. No voy a negar que donde más se destacan es en las escenas de acción, demostración de poder, persecuciones y demás.
La paleta viva y variada de colores, el diseño característico de los personajes y el estilo de dibujo y animación similares al de los cómics de superhéroes es de lo mejor. Los efectos visuales, detalles y fluidez es también algo que me fascina bastante de este anime. Me gusta mucho también cómo resaltan los momentos épicos y dramáticos de los cómicos y comunes con una mezcla perfecta de tonos fríos, oscuros y con sombras en tonos cálidos, brillantes y con buena iluminación. Los efectos de sonido también son excelentes, aunque nada comparado con la banda sonora que tiene este anime.
Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 9/10 en lo que respecta al género de acción, superhéroes, drama y comedia.

Its been a while since I last watch MHA, I stop at season 5.
I already downloaded season 5 but haven't started it yet. Man its been so long I already forgot the story haha. And we even have this Vigilantes that i've no idea about. It looks good, should I watch this first before i proceed on season 5 (⌐■-■)
