Lotus Garden Newsletter for Homesteaders. 11th August 2021

This week there was a focus on harvests and preserving in the homesteading communities. It's obviously the time of year for it, so we may as well go with the flow, therefore this week's highlights focus on these topics. I'm getting hungry just reading them all!

Things happening in the community.

The @ecotrain question of the week seems to be directing us to look for positives at a time that we seem to be surrounded by negatives. It asks what is the most amazing thing that someone has ever done for you?

Some highlights of the week

Something farmers have done throughout the years is selective breeding. The results of doing this develops plants and livestock not only to a specification that's desirable to you, but also one that's durable to the climate you're in. This week @goldenoakfarm has been grading the garlic harvest and she shares with us what she looks for and why.

Making hay isn't always straight forward and sometimes you've just got to take the small window of opportunity when it presents itself. So while everyone else was away doing just that, @farm-mom used the quiet time to make pesto to freeze in order to preserve a bountiful basil harvest.

Meanwhile, over on a different continent, @buckaroobaby is preserving citrus harvests in the form of marmalade, one of the forms of preserving which doesn't require freezing.

This leads us nicely onto another method of preserving with @notconvinced, in the form of canning. For this step by step lesson on the canning process we get to see the preserving of tomatoes.

Thank you for stopping by. This week's newsletter was brought to you by @minismallholding and I have chosen @goldenoakfarm to receive 10% beneficiary.

I'm glad I found it. I was reading through the conversation on River's garden journal post, so I'm glad you bright it up there. 😁

Yay! Thanks for the feature. And a great selection of homesteading projects! Well done @goldenoak. I still need to get on top of growing large quantities of garlic! Most we've ever planted was 300 but it barely lasts us as a family the year

You're welcome.

My garlic growing is completely random. I'm currently living in hope that our last one doesn't run out before I can harvest this year's.
