RE: Geothermal As An Alternative To Batteries?

You are viewing a single comment's thread:

On the individual level a lot of alternative building type people have worked on passive annual heat storage systems to do this sort of thing on a much smaller scale. There are different versions but basically heat a large bank of insulated earth during the summer and pull that heat during the winter.

I think overall that distributing energy generation to the individual level is going to be a much better solution than bigger and better central solutions. I'd much rather have 1000 houses with micro-cogeneration solar, hydro, wind than a huge solar farm. What you lose in maintenance economies of scale you make up in systems-level resiliency.

I agree about the resiliency point of view and security of getting away from the grid based model.

However, using solar as an example, there are only a few places that it will realistically work at a sustainable product level. I can see it providing most of the energy in Mexico, Texas, or Florida. The problem is when Calgary tries to use it since it doesnt have the number of days with sun coupled with the distance from the equator.

The idea of individual homes or communities powering themselves makes sense. I guess the question is how to get there?

Yeah, appropriateness remains an issue whether micro or macro.

One of the positives for geothermal is it works almost everywhere.
