[ENGE/ESP] Review: Novel For Whom the Bell Tolls by Ernest Hemingway/Novela Por Quién Doblan las Campanas por Ernest Hemingway (Reseña)

Hello friends, today I will tell you about a novel I read in my adolescence, “For Whom the Bell Tolls”, by the writer and Nobel Prize Winner Ernest Hemingway (1899-1961). This novel was published in 1940, set in the Spanish civil war, it is a love novel in turbulent times, where what you least expect is to find love between death.

Hola amigos, hoy les hablaré de una novela que leí en mi adolescencia, “Por quién doblan las campanas”, del escritor y premio nobel de literatura Ernest Hemingway (1899-1961). Esta novela fue publicada en 1940, ambientada en la guerra civil española, es una novela de amor en tiempos turbulentos, en dónde lo que menos esperas es encontrar entre la muerte, el amor.

When I read this novel I almost stopped reading it, because it is cumbersome with details and descriptions at the beginning, somewhat slow, in addition to being narrated in the third person and it is the thoughts and reflections of this man that accompany us throughout the novel and it is through him that we meet the other characters. I think the first time I read it I was very young and did not appreciate the true essence of this novel, the rawness of how it portrays in such a real way what a civil war means and implies. Many years later I had the wisdom to read it again and I understood many things that I previously overlooked, so today I can see in detail many things about this book and what the author captured.

Cuando leí esta novela casi la dejo de leer, porque es engorrosa de detalles y descripciones al principio, algo lenta, además de ser narrada en tercera persona y son los pensamientos y reflexiones de este hombre lo que nos acompañan a lo largo de la novela y es por medio de él que conocemos los demás personajes. Pienso que la primera vez que lo leí era muy joven y no aprecie la verdadera esencia de esta novela, la crudeza de cómo retrata de manera tan real lo que significa e implica una guerra civil. Muchos años después tuve el acierto de leerlo de nuevo y comprendí muchas cosas que antes pase por alto, así hoy puedo ver con detalle muchas cosas de este libro y lo que el autor plasmo.

The novel tells the story of a dynamiter named Robert Jordan, whose mission to knock down a bridge in the Sierra de Guadarrama, Spain, where he meets some guerrillas fighting for the Republic against the fascists, in the middle of the Spanish civil war ( 1936). He joins these guerrillas and knows their stories, experiences, tragedies, losses and loves.

La novela relata la historia de un dinamitero de nombre Robert Jordan, cuya misión en derribar un puente en la sierra de Guadarrama, España, en donde se encuentra con algunos guerrilleros luchando por la República en contra de los fascistas, en plena guerra civil española (1936). Se une a estos guerrilleros y conoce sus historias, vivencias, tragedias, perdidas y amores.

There he meets María with whom he will fall in love, a girl who was rescued by the group and whom Pilar, wife of Pablo the leader, takes as a daughter. In three days Jordan will have to blow up the bridge to stop the subversives who want to end the Republic. In the meantime Jordán realizes the harshness of the war that it is not soldiers but people of the people who fight, the common people, listen to the stories of how the fascists attacked the town of Pilar and how the republicans attacked the town of María, two sides of the same coin a people divided by ideals.

Allí conoce a María de quién se enamorará, una chica que fue rescatada por el grupo y a la cual Pilar esposa de Pablo el líder, la toma como una hija. En tres días Jordán deberá volar el puente para detener a los subversivos que quieren acabar con la República. En el ínterin Jordán se da cuenta de la crudeza de la guerra de que no son soldados sino gente de pueblo la que pelea, la gente común, escucha las historias de como los fascistas atacaron el pueblo de Pilar y como los republicanos él de María, dos caras de una misma moneda un pueblo dividido por ideales.

Jordán understands that no one wins in a civil war and that you have to kill, even if you don't want to to survive, this is summarized by the author in a phrase from the book “No one is exempt. The war has come and has taken the whole world ahead ”. In the end, Jordan must sacrifice his life for the cause, to give his companions a chance to escape.

Jordán entiende que nadie gana en una guerra civil y que hay que matar, aunque no quieras para sobrevivir, esto lo resume el autor en una frase del libro “Nadie esta exento. La guerra ha llegado y se ha llevado a todo el mundo por delante”. Al final Jordán debe sacrificar su vida por la causa, para darle una oportunidad a sus compañeros de escapar.

This novel for me is one of Hemingway's best, portraying one of the worst and bloodiest moments in Spain, leaving us accurate reflections on this episode in Spanish history and allowing us to understand why Donne was right when he said: “Las campanas they double for you ”.

Esta novela para mi es una de la mejores de Hemingway, que retrata uno de los peores momentos y más sangrientos de España, nos deja reflexiones acertadas de este episodio de la historia española y nos permite entender porque Donne tuvo razón cuando dijo: “Las campanas doblan por ti”.
