Hello friends, today I want to tell you about a movie that I recently had the opportunity to see, it is “Medieval”, a film directed by Petr Jákl and starring one of my favorite actors Ben Foster. This film tells us about the life in his youth of one of the most intelligent strategists of the fifteenth century, Jan Zizka, who faced the Teutonic Order and the Holy Roman Empire, achieving the unthinkable at that time, defeating them.

Hola amigos, hoy quiero hablarles de una película que recientemente tuve la oportunidad de ver, se trata de “Medieval”, una cinta dirigida por Petr Jákl y protagonizada por uno de mis actores favoritos Ben Foster. Esta cinta nos cuenta la vida en su juventud de uno de los estrategas más inteligente del siglo XV, Jan Zizka, quien se enfrentó a la Orden Teutónica y al Sacro Imperio Romano Germánico, logrando, lo impensable para ese entonces, vencerlos.

This film, I must say, has not been well received, on the one hand, by the critical specialty (which are divided). In my opinion, the film, despite its high graphic violence (strong scenes), is good and sticks to historical moments in the life of this commander who would become the stone in the Empire's shoe. We will see and learn how Jan Zizka, who at the beginning was a mercenary, changes as he realizes the suffering of his people.

Esta cinta, debo decir, no ha sido bien recibida, por una parte, de la crítica especialidad (las cuales están divididas). En mi opinión, la película, a pesar de su alta violencia gráfica (escenas fuertes), es buena y se ciñe a momentos históricos de la vida de este comandante que se convertiría en la piedra en el zapato del Imperio. Veremos y conoceremos como Jan Zizka, que en sus comienzos era un mercenario, va cambiando a medida que se da cuenta del sufrimiento de su pueblo.

For those of us who like medieval stories, this is undoubtedly a movie you should see, the fight scenes are extraordinary and seem real due to the rawness of what we see on screen, which makes you pay attention to the plot. We will also see for the first time his genius as a Zizka military strategist, winning battles with few men, with trickery and cunning, one of the qualities that would make him a general of the Hussites in the first crusade.

Para quienes nos gustas las historias medievales, esta sin duda es una película que debes ver, las escenas de luchas son extraordinarias y parecen reales por la crudeza de lo que vemos en pantalla, lo que hace que estés atento a la trama. También veremos por mi primera vez la genialidad como estratega militar de Zizka, al ganar batallas con pocos hombres, con engaños y astucias, una de las cualidades que lo volverían general de los husitas en la primera cruzada.

Like any medieval movie, the romance factor is not far behind and we will see it embodied in his attraction to Ketherine (Sophie Lowe). The political plots that unleashed the discontent of the people with the seizure of power by King Sigismund (Matthew Goode) and his fight with Rosenberg (Til Schweiger), are the ingredients that will generate an explosive broth that will culminate in a revolt of the people to preserve their rights. and what they consider fair. All these factors made Jan Zizka decide to take sides in the revolts and be an important character in the cause to the point of becoming its maximum leader and general.

Como toda película medieval, el factor romance no queda atrás y lo veremos encarnado en su atracción por Ketherine (Sophie Lowe). Las tramas políticas que desataron el descontento del pueblo con la toma de poder del Rey Sigismund (Matthew Goode) y su lucha con Rosenberg (Til Schweiger), son los ingredientes que generaran un caldo explosivo que culminara en una revuelta del pueblo para preservar sus derechos y lo que consideran justo. Todos estos factores hicieron que Jan Zizka, decidiera tomar partido en las revueltas y ser un importante personaje de la causa al punto de convertirse en su máximo líder y general.

Before seeing the film, I was completely unaware of the life of this man who, in what is now the Czech Republic, is considered one of the national heroes and greatest military strategist of the 15th century, with the idea of war chariots, which it allowed him to win battles when outnumbered and outgunned, which made him famous. A man that I consider ahead of his time and who, despite his adversities, never gave up in the end.

Antes de ver la película desconocía por completo la vida de este hombre que, en lo que hoy es la República Checa, es considerado como uno de los héroes nacionales y mayor estratega militar del siglo XV, con la idea de los carros de guerra, que le permitió ganar batallas cuando estaba en inferioridad numérica y de armas, que lo hizo famoso. Un hombre que considero adelantado a su época y que a pesar de las adversidades nunca se rindió al final.

Finally, as a negative point for many, since it does not have a large budget and it is a Czech production, there are certain gaps and performances of secondary characters that are not very good with visible flaws, but in general I consider the weight of the main performances and the plot make up for those shortcomings. For me this is a film that is worth seeing and arouses curiosity to know who Jan Zizka was and his story.

Finalmente, como punto negativo para muchos es que al no contar con un gran presupuesto y ser una producción Checa, hay ciertos vacíos y actuaciones de personajes secundarios no muy buenas con fallos visibles, pero en general considero el peso de las actuaciones principales y la trama compensa esas faltas. Para mí esta es una cinta que vale la pena ver y despierta la curiosidad por saber quien fue Jan Zizka y su historia.
