By the time you read this, I'm with mom.

Jane sat by her window watching her father's car drive away. He and her had been on bad terms since the death of her junior brother because she blamed him for his death. She always thought Daniel, her brother, felt he didn't live up to their father's expectations and for that reason, he took his own life. Their mum died when she was little. It had just been the three of them until they were just two. He had come to her house that day to tell her he was sorry and that he was leaving the country because everything there reminded him of all he had lost, his wife, his son and now, a daughter who couldn't bring herself to forgive him. She didn't care, he died a long time ago in her mind. Along with the apology, he brought a few of Daniel's things he thought she might like to keep as well as a box that had "for Jane" written on the side. It was a small brown box that Daniel left for her to find after he was gone but the pain of his death never allowed her go through his things. It was still sealed.

She got the box from her father without showing any sign of forgiveness or remorse for shutting him out all those years. She didn't even invite him into her home.
He was never one to push her, he just made her aware of his decision to leave the country. She knew there was a big chance she was never going to see him again but she didn't care, she wanted him out of her life anyways. She closed the door and went to keep the things upstairs where she watched as his vintage car drove away until it was out of her line of sight. Devastated Jane couldn't bring herself to check what her dad brought, her emotions were too overwhelming, she would probably spend the whole day crying and wishing Daniel would come to her rescue knowing so well he was gone.

Her thoughts were interrupted the sound of the box falling to the floor, she was so deep in thoughts, she accidentally hit it. As she bent down to pick up the things that had fallen out, she noticed the sealed box with her name on it. She grabbed it and broke the seal. Inside were pictures of her and Daniel taken during the summer they spent with their grandmother by the lake house, his silver necklace with a pendant that looked like the letter M. She could never figure out what the M stood for, only that he never went anywhere without it, and one of her favorite books she gave him to read but he never did.

Inside the book was a piece of paper. She opened it.

If you are not Jane, don't read this, it has my dirty secrets. Hey J, I hope you get to read this after I'm gone, I know you're not really good at finding stuffs. I can't tell what you you're doing right now but I know you're in a lot of hurt. I'm sorry I had to leave you like this. I felt like I was all alone even when I had people around. Dad's paying for my therapy but it isn't working, I don't feel any different. I can tell he's really worried. He keeps telling me he loves me and he cannot afford to lose me, he's a pretty amazing guy. I want you to know this is a decision I took by myself. I don't want you to feel like you had anything to do with it, you didn't. I found the dark very comforting so I've decided to go there for good. Take care dad, I told him to take care of you too, you're all he's got now. I'll say hello to mom for you. You can stop wondering what the M stands for, it's for Mom. By the time you read this, we are probably holding hands, smiling down on you. Oh and I finished this book, I know you thought I wouldn't read it at all, it's interesting, I wished it had ended different though. We are going to see again someday. I love you,

Daniel...

Tears ran down through her cheeks as read the letter, she felt remorseful now, she had lost her mom and brother and had just lost her dad too. She wasted no time. She rushed to call her dad but the line didn't go through. She didn't pause, she dashed downstairs to grab her keys hoping she would meet him at the airport because he took off. That was going to be hard, she didn't bother to ask him where he was going to when he came earlier. She ran to the car. As she opened the front door, there he was standing, her father. He couldn't bare to leave her like that. As tears ran down through her cheeks, she ran to hug him, feeling a little bit of comfort. Daniel had led her to find what she was looking for, closure.

This is testament to the fact that most times everything is not as it seems. We should always try to have a roundtable with the people we love in order to understand the underlying reasons and causes of some conflicts.

It's good that she eventually mustered up the courage to read the letter and luckily for her, it wasn't too late

Getting the whole story before we judge is one of life's essential. For most people, it's too late, the damage has already been done. All we can hope for is to be better with our judgment

The worst moments in life seem to be associated with death. With the death of her brother Jane faces loneliness. When we suffer a loss we always look for a culprit and we usually find it in the people we are closest to. The use of the letter helps both the reader and the character to understand and accept.
Thank you for writing this sensitive story for The INk Well, @nelson-george. We encourage you to keep your comments coming in other posts.

What a touching story...
It's sad to see that most times we blame others for the worst things that happens to us ...it's hard to resist because we're humans..

It would have ended pretty badly if she hadn't seen the letter that Daniel had left her, everything , including her world could have changed..I'm glad it had a happy ending. ..

Great story ❤️

Sometimes we blame other people because we do not want to blame ourselves for these things.

Most people that are hurting need closure and I'm happy Jane got it, thanks for the awesome comment

Sad story, brilliant, but sad. I'm happy she got to reconcile with her dad, he was the only family she had. I'm still sad Daniel died though.

It is one of the most difficult topics for human beings and many times we try to understand why things have happened.
