The fire
"What happened?"
Emily walked into the room to find El crying on the floor. There were opened bags everywhere with clothes scattered across the room.
"I can't find it, I can find it anywhere"
"Find what?"
"My mom's necklace, it was right here when I left"
"Let's go El, we'll be late, it's just a necklace"
"I can't believe you just said that"
"I'm sorry, I'll help you look"
The girls searched the room but the necklace was nowhere to be found. Elly couldn't have left it anywhere else. It was the last thing she had of her mother after the fire. Nobody knew what started it but Elly woke up in the arms of a fireman and the necklace wrapped around her fingers. Her mother wasn't so lucky.
"We have to go El, even if you can't find the necklace, do you want to miss the funeral? We'll find it when we come back, I promise"
Elly wiped the tears off her face as she got ready to leave. The sky was grey, rain clouds filled the skies but couldn't feel the emptiness Emily felt inside.
"I don't think I can stay here, I can't do this"
"It's okay if you can't stay, I'll follow you home, I can't say I know what you're going through but I'm here for you El. Wait for me, I'll go tell mom we're living"
"Tell her I can't stay for my own mother's burial?"
"She'll understand, she knows how hard this is for you"
"She won't nobody will, nobody will understand"
"What are you talking about El, we understand, nobody will blame you for leaving"
"Not for leaving, for the fire"
"What fire? What's going on El?"
"The fire, I started the fire, I was an accident, I didn't mean for it to happen"
"Wait, "the fire", El, what are you saying"
Tears filled Elly's eyes, she knew everybody would blame her for what happened. Her mother was dead and now they knew the cause, or at least Emily knew.
"What do we do? Do we tell mother?"
"No!! Please don't tell anyone until I find the necklace"
"Why"
"I don't know what would happen to me after everybody knows, I need to make sure I have a piece of my mom with me before anything else happens"
"I'd help you look but we have to come clean after that, it wasn't your fault, it was an accident"
"But it was my fault".
"Let's go find the necklace then we tell my mom, she'll figure out how to clean this mess, you're going to be fine"
"You're sure?"
"Very, it was a mistake, my mom can fix it"
It is normal that after an accident the perpetrators are tormented, but, it is an accident, it is just that, an accident.
Elly is very confused and saddened by the death of her mother. She has also lost the object that links her to the memory of the deceased. It is really a very tragic plot, maybe with a little work on the resolution of the story we could have clear what will happen to the protagonist. Thank you for writing this story.
