The First Anime and Shojo Manga I Saw: Kaichou Wa Maid Sama [En-Es]

avatar

The first time I saw a shojo genre plot was in 2016. Having never tried a genre other than shōnen before, watching Kaichou Wa Maid Sama at this point was something really new to me. It's rare for a man to watch an anime and read a shojo manga. Usually, we would go for drama, horror and even gore. I really like gore.

Kaichou Wa Maid Sama was a recommendation from a college friend. It's actually an anime that I ended up liking a lot. The concept and animation were good enough to keep me entertained. That friend recommended an Ecchi anime to me. I remember telling him that I played 5 minutes of that anime that I don't remember the name of, and I stopped watching it. Ecchi is not my favorite genre; I don't like it. Upon telling him this, he recommended Kaichou Wa Maid Sama. It all came up in the midst of challenges and distracting means to drain the responsibilities.

The romantic plot is very good, centered on the relationship between Kaichou Ayuzawa, Misaki (I love you, Misaki), and the Usui, high school beau, Takumi. In other words, the story takes place at Seika High School.

One of the main aspects is that this high school has a majority boy population, but Misaki is the president of the student center, or rather, the demon president, as everyone calls her in the story.

Misaki has a personality that surrounds you and makes you understand her. She is a woman who fights and achieves great things. I say that because I watched the anime and read the manga in its entirety. What do you mean, I read the entire manga? Originally, I watched the 26-episode anime and one Ova, but since the story was interesting and there were things I wanted to know, I decided to go for the whole thing. Every single event hits home emotionally, and I understood why it was recommended to me. There's a lot of purity; it's a beautiful school romance.

Certainly, Misaki, despite being the Kaichou of Seika High School, is also an ordinary person, with problems like everyone else, and so she surprisingly works as a maid in coffee. In the first 26 episodes, Misaki focuses on keeping her secret so as not to be ridiculed at her school.

Do you know where this is going? Well, if she hides the truth, there is someone who finds out what she does after she leaves school, and that character is the protagonist of the story, Usui Walker Takumi.

Usui's character is that of a typical boy who knows how to do everything, i.e., cook, act, is good at sports, plays the typical violin, and is beautiful enough to be very popular. All is perfect so far, right? However, Usui hides a lot of secrets in the story; every little detail can be understood with more insight in the manga.

At this point, I would like to highlight the production of the anime that took place in 2010. The adaptation is well done, and the images of the characters are aesthetically digestible visually. At that time, the color yellow was used a lot together with the color pink to express emotions. This is also the case in this story.

The genres you can see in anime and manga are mainly romanced, comedy and drama. These three genres are very well compacted, and there are many things that make you laugh, such as the nickname Misaki uses to refer to Usui: “funny alien from the planet pheromone”.

Something that debates the plot of the anime and manga in a very healthy way is Misaki's strict rules in Seika. Many boys accuse her of being a demon, a feminist, and evil. The hatred towards the Kaichou is noticeable in many episodes; however, her secret activities in Maid Latte show that she is not really that kind of evil person everyone thinks.

I should point out that Misaki is a character who prioritizes honor, but because of her limited resources, she has to work to support her studies. Usui, on the other hand, is a guy who has it all; he's an idiot, sexy and stubborn to a certain extent.

Really, for the first shojo I've seen, I liked the warmth of the characters and how they were growing little by little. Even when they try to separate them, they have to decide between their dreams, money or the love they feel for each other.

If you watch the anime and read the manga, you will laugh a lot at what happens in Seika and Maid Latte, the costumes each of the maids wears, and what they say. It really is a unique story that even has a message of self-worth and what a human being can do to grow up. Kaichou, I love you.

A point in your favour. It all depends on the story and how entertaining it is.

Oh, kaichou wa maid sama was one of the first anime that I watched, but unfortunately I wasn't able to finish it. My weeb friend was the one who recommended it to me, assuming that I like shojo because I'm a girl, but shojo isn't really my thing. In fact most of the anime that I've watched and also manga that I've read are either shonen or seinen... so after watching a couple of episodes from it, I dropped it. But upon reading your review I am intrigued

However, Usui hides a lot of secrets in the story; every little detail can be understood with more insight in the manga.

So yeah, I'll definitely try reading its manga later since I'm really up for the story and details!

hahahahahaha you're one of mine. I think you should watch it, although I would recommend the manga more. I liked it more, but you also have to know where to read it from. Usui's secrets and what happens little by little develops.

What happened to you reminded me of what I commented on with the ecchi. :3

I watched this anime many years ago, I didn't read the manga, so my opinion is more reflected in what I watched in the anime.

I loved Misaki as the main character, she is very well made and with a nice personality for the viewer, I didn't like Usui at the beginning haha but I guess in the manga you can see more of his development and maybe even change my opinion about him.

Anyway, it is an entertaining anime and at the time I enjoyed it, it has a nice animation and a protagonist that pleases 👌

This is one of the best shojo animes out there. Can't believe it's already more than 10 years old!

Same here, I haven't seen a shojo anime for a long time since Sailor Moon, it is crazy because I watched some of the episodes of Sailor Moon back in the day.
