Introduction

Many people watch a movie and don't really care about things making sense in a story/plot, for example, one time I was talking about the BBC TV Series Merlin with somebody, I was saying there was so much irrationality going on in there and I used one episode to give an example of the irrationality. In that episode a witch wanted to kill the King and his son, the witch could teleport and all but instead of teleporting to their backs and stabbing them she rather teleported to the back of a singer, stabbed her, changed her form to look exactly like the singer and went to the palace to sing.

In the palace, she sang a song that made everyone including the king and prince fall asleep. When they all fell asleep she now brought out her knife to stab them. What rubbish? The person laughed and told me I was thinking too much, and that I should just enjoy the movie. And in my time I've met many people who are like this person too, a logical plot is not so important to them.

But for me it is and I'm sure there are a lot of people like me too and others who enjoy fishing out plot flaws and talking about them. So here we go!

Plot Flaws in the Movie Ghostbusters Afterlife (2021)

So I've just watched the movie Ghostbusters Afterlife (2021) starring: Paul Ruud, Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, McKenna Grace, etc. It is a sequel to the older Ghostbusters movies made in 1984 and 1989. And I'm going to show you where there was a gaffe in the plot similar to the one I talked about under the header "Introduction" above.

Flaws 1

The biggest plot flaw in this movie is that Egon Spengler's fellow Ghostbusters did not believe him when he said something bigger which would destroy the world was coming. Here are the words of one of them:

"Then Egon started to tell people that their little ghost problems didn't matter because the world was coming to an end. He got spooky, freaked me out... He kept rambling on about the rising storm, huge psychic tornado that was gonna consume humanity and darkness forever. And kid, I wanted to believe..."

That's really illogical, illogical because how would a ghost hunter find talk about ghosts spooky and get freaked out? How would a ghost hunter dismiss his colleague when his colleague says that the ghosts are regrouping and planning to come back in a big way? What is so unbelievable about that? What is so far-fetched and unlikely about that?

If he wasn't a ghost hunter then it would have been a different case. You can say, ah this person doesn't believe in ghosts that's why he's doubting, he only believes in things that sound more realistic. But this is a ghost hunter for god's sake! He has seen ghosts, hunted them down for years, captured them, knows so much about ghosts, etc. So what kind of talk about ghosts would sound too far-fetched to him? What can ever be too unbelievable for him?

You get my point, right? The plot made his colleagues sound like people who don't believe in ghosts when they made them disbelieve Egon Spengler. And that doesn't make any sense.

It would also have been a different matter if the plot gave reasons why his colleagues disbelieved him. Like maybe some technical arguments that showed how impossible his theory was but in the plot there was no such thing, his colleagues simply dismissed him like he was just doing some madman ramblings!

And that just doesn't make any sense because in the world of ghosthunters it has to be extremely hard to sound like a madman when talking about ghosts. Everything that is supposed to sound far-fetched to a regular person is supposed to make perfect sense to a fellow ghost hunter because it is the reality they see every day.

Flaw 2

Another flaw in this movie is the fact that Egon Spengler had to leave his daughter for all those many years without any contact even after she had children. But it turns out he loved her so much and had been tracking her life, keeping photos, etc.

It's understandable that his mission was so important and he had to be away, but with that sort of love, there's no way he would have made zero contact for all those many years. Little contact at least would have been tolerable in the plot, but zero? No. Makes no sense in the plot.

Conclusion

It was a good movie, though, if you ask me. I enjoyed the way the jokes came together, the feel and the storyline to some extent. To some extent only, because as you can see, those flaws got me shifting in my seat 😂.
