Chess960 oder Schach-960, auch Fischer-Random-Chess oder Fischerschach genannt, ist eine von Schachgroßmeister Bobby Fischer entwickelte Schachvariante mit 960 möglichen unterschiedlichen Ausgangsstellungen. Genaugenommen ist es eine Verallgemeinerung des Schachspiels durch eine fast beliebige Anordnung der bekannten Schachfiguren auf der Grundreihe jeder Partei.

Zum ersten Mal vorgestellt wurde diese Variante am 19. Juni 1996 in Buenos Aires. Fischers Ziel war es, eine Schachvariante zu entwickeln, die mehr Gewicht auf die Kreativität und das Talent des Spielers legte, als auf das Auswendiglernen und Analysieren von Eröffnungen. Dies sollte durch zufällige Eröffnungsstellungen erreicht werden, die ein Auswendiglernen von Eröffnungszügen wenig hilfreich erscheinen lassen.

Die Regeln für Chess960 wurden 2009 vom Weltschachverband FIDE als Bestandteil der Schachregeln in ihr Regelwerk („Laws of Chess“, Anhang F) aufgenommen. Im Jahre 2019 fand erstmals eine offizielle Weltmeisterschaft statt. Der aktuelle Weltmeister ist Wesley So.

Chess960 or Chess-960, also known as Fischer Random Chess or Fischerschach, is a chess variant developed by chess grandmaster Bobby Fischer with 960 possible different starting positions. Strictly speaking, it is a generalization of the game of chess through an almost arbitrary arrangement of the well-known chess pieces on the back rank of each side.

This variant was presented for the first time on June 19, 1996 in Buenos Aires. Fischer's goal was to develop a chess variant that placed more emphasis on the player's creativity and talent than on memorizing and analyzing openings. This should be achieved through random opening positions that make memorizing opening moves seem unhelpful.

The rules for Chess960 were included in 2009 by the World Chess Federation FIDE as part of the rules of chess (“Laws of Chess”, Appendix F). In 2019, an official world championship took place for the first time. The current world champion is Wesley So.
