Addiction: A Matter of Willpower or Something More?

Addiction is something we all have seen if not experienced. It doesn’t just happen in a day, it’s a combination of the little daily habits we constantly keep on engaging in. Over time, it’s starts to become a part of our daily lives. Addiction can be good or bad just as anything else we know.

Sometimes we start an activity without having the mindset of making it a habit but as we all know, people slowly start to go back to the things they find pleasure in. For example, I promised myself to eat sharwarma once a month but for the love of the game, I eat it more than twice a month. It’s not something I enjoy doing, but the soul wants what it wants. I do exercise though, so I guess that accounts for the effects of too much sharwarma on my health.

However, addiction can be difficult for everyone as we all have our way of life and how we treat and react to the things we like. Some people get addicted to something and they keep on abusing it over and over again. And you know that regret you feel after you have done what you promised not to do, they feel it. But will they still do it the next day, yes! It’s not that they intentionally did it, that’s just how addiction works.

We have all seen how drug addicts can literally sell their entire property just to buy drugs because they want to feel the high. Sometimes not being high affects them more than they being high. The body is used to it at that point and taking away what the body is used to can be very hard. And that’s why most drug addicts who go for rehab experience all those severe withdrawal symptoms. I haven’t experienced it before, but I know it’s as bad as it comes.

Some might blame prior for getting addicted to something. But we don’t just wake up and say oh, I’m making a mental note won’t get addicted to drugs or junk food. It happens over time and before you know it, it’s gotten out of hand. I personally wouldn’t blame anyone for their addiction- but I know they could have done better. You don’t blame people after the harm has already been done, you help them work their way through whatever phase they are in that is if they went to do better and get better.

Honestly, I believe most of our governments are performing terrible when it comes to the aspect of addiction in our various countries. Our streets are filled with addicts with no one to help than. Thankfully, there are some good people out there who have taken the step to help those in need of help getting rid of their addictions. This is a step in the right direction and hopefully, most people start helping out in the regard. The world can and will be a better place if we learn to hold each other in our lowest times.

Addiction is as a result of an habit we are comfortable with, with consistency, the habit becomes a part of us. The grip of addiction on the mind is so tight to the extent, we get confused and begin to wonder who is in control. It is a psychological warfare.
