If Punishment Works, Why Do People Still Commit Crimes?

Every minute all over the world, we have people committing crimes. And almost everyday, we have someone being sent to jail for one of two crimes. Need I not forget to add that everyday, so some loses his o her life to crime. With all these statistics and number, we always have someone somewhere in the world who wouldn’t take that as a lesson.

Crime has grown to become a part of life. We all do bad things regardless of how much of a saint we think we are. Sometime we do these things intentionally and other times we do it intentionally but without a choice. Life can be hard, and as much as I don’t want to make an excuse for people who commit crimes, some people commit some crimes because they have no option. Imagine a mother stealing a loaf of bread to feed her hungry children.

Well, you could say oh, she could have just gotten a job and something but hey, life isn’t always black and white. Life can be hard on you and all that you do will still not yield anything. However, the human mind is a place of its own. It can be the brightest of places and also the darkest of places. And all these things drive crime to some extent. We have all seen the news, the movies and what have you. People spend their entire lives in prison for crimes committed. So then I ask myself why people continue to commit crimes.

Honestly, I don’t think the question is one I can answer entirely. Everyone is different in his own way and same goes for every criminal. Some people derive joy from committing crimes, other people just don’t know why they commit crime while others do it not because they want to, but they have to. At the end of the day, we will all pay the price for our actions.

I’m not one to judge others because if I’m to find myself in others shoes, I might do worse. And that makes me know that crime to some extent can never be understood. Some people don’t choose the crime life, they somehow find themselves roped up in that life thanks to the company they keep. And who’s to be blame for that? No one but themselves. It could be me and it also could be you. We know the price but we stop do it. This should tell us that it isn’t always about the act but the state of mind.

No matter how much we try to get rid of crime, it will still be in our societies and counties at large. Because we can’t all be saints. Someone will most definitely to something that one supposed to be done, and there’s nothing we can do about it. At the end of the day, just make sure to be in control of your mind, your thoughts and your actions because these are the things that drive us. Knowing who you are is the beginning of finding yourself. Don’t get caught up in the crime life because you’re confused and still finding yourself. Calm your nerves and walk the road because life is a journey of discovering….
