Should Public Art Be Censored?

For as long as I can remember, art has been one of the few things that has been able to bring the world together. I’ve walked into art exhibitions where both the rich and poor were equal. They both felt things as they should. And right then and there, I knew that when it came to art, your class didn’t really matter because everyone is meant to receive it as it is.

When I was younger, I really didn’t understand why people were so obsessed with art. But as I grew up, I slowly started to understand the concept and depth of art. Art is beauty and there’s no better way to express beauty than in art. Everyone has his way or communicating his feelings or emotions. Some do it through music, others through writing and then there’s those who express what they feel through art.

You look at some paintings and you wonder what was going through the artists mind. Some art gives you different view of things. Just looking at one piece of art can send your mind into millions of trajectories. Every artist is different as is every piece of art they make. To me, art is straight from the soul. It’s gives you depth and rawness and that’s what I love about it.

I’ve seen that slowly, the world is starting to appreciate the various styles of art we have. As we evolve, things change and the good part of being human is that we always adapt. Now, there’s different types of art for different purposes. Recently, there was this street art thing going on for high schoolers where those who studied art were made to step out and put their paintings out on the streets to the whole world could see. You pass some highways and all the walls are filled with different variety of art. This is actually the expose these young ones need. Imagine your work being pasted on a highway used by millions of people on the daily basis, this is peak peak motivation.

As much as I love art and how we are making art a part of our lives, not all art is meant to be on the streets. I say this because public art is meant to be viewed by all types of people and people of all age groups. And as parents and guardians, we know there are some things we do not want to expire our kids to at an early age. Let’s talk about art in the context of nudity.

Some people appreciate art when it’s in the form of nudity. There’s nothing really bad about that. Others also love art that depicts violence. But these types of art aren’t the kind of art we want our kids to be seeing on our highways on the daily basis. Let’s let kids be kids. And this isn’t only about kids. Even some adults stay away from suck content. And this shows you how much some art out there affect not just kids but a huge number of people you never thought of.

Art is beautiful and beauty is expressed best if it’s in the form of art of you ask me. But then, not every beauty is meant to be publicized. Some beauty thrive in the depths of darkness and secrecy. Let’s keep them that way.
