Sweat, Strategy, and Sweet Victory

My life changed so much when I moved into the university. I always knew I wanted to do this and that but someway somehow I knew that being in my comfort zone wasn’t going to do the job. I was a bit nervous when I had to go to school very far from home but I had to do it for me. Today, I look back and I’m glad I took that step.

This is my team and I from a year back. We are passionate about making a change and we leave no stone unturned. I’ve been with this family throughout my whole time in university but in my final year, everything felt different.

I was elected to be the team president and that wasn’t an easy task at all. Having to keep everyone in order, keeping the team spirit up, getting the work done and dealing with other peoples bs was no joke. Then, I had school work to deal with, project work, lectures, quizzes and exams.

You might be wondering what team this is. Here’s a little summary. Basically, we are a part of an international organization whose aim is to come up with business ideas which tackle some societal problems as well as the 17sdgs. Sounds like fun right? It is, but it comes with a lot of work.

Every year, we have a national competition where almost all universities in the country come to compete and showcase their works. There, a winner is selected to represent the country at the international stage. My team had been the national champions for two years in a row and I didn’t want to break that record during my tenure of being the team lead.

At some point along the line, we were running out of time with our presentation and other stuff for the national competition because we had businesses and customers to deal with. Our projects are time consuming ones but they’re life changers.

I wanted to get my team involved with the field work more because we didn’t have many continuing students among us, most of them were freshers. Everyday , I would go to the projects site to check on how things were going and I would invite anyone who was free to join me since I didn’t want this to interfere with their academic life. On weekends, they would arrange and we would go spend the day doing what we love.

Two months to national competition and I almost lost my mind. Running on two hours of sleep and so much stress wasn’t that easy. I needed to prep my people very well to bring the championship back home. They thought I was being hard on them but in actual sense I wasn’t. When I first joined the team, we would stay up all night rehearsing our scripts with hot tea.😂

At some point the team spirit was down and I couldn’t afford that. I would then use my own pocket money to get extra snacks for my people because that’s what they love and it keeps us going.

A whole year of hardwork, commitment, dedication, teamwork, tears and much more didn’t go in vain. We came back home with the trophy and an opportunity to represent ourselves and our country at the international stages. To show the world the good things and the change we are effecting in our country Ghana. I couldn’t be more proud of myself and my team because it was all a dream come true. Indeed, those were the good old days.
