Veto Power: Necessary Authority or Too Much Power?

Politics as I always say ha been a dirty game and will continue to be one as far as humans exist on planet earth. Deny it as much as you want politics plays a role in almost every sector in our various countries. Even in our own homes, schools, work places, hospitals and what have you. There is always an issue of power somewhere in one way or the other. In some places, it is spoken of and in other places, it is not.

Humans are selfish by nature. You might say oh, I’m not selfish and bla bla bla but when push comes to shove, you will put yourself first without a second thought. I will understand and it’s totally fine because it’s in human nature to always think of a way to save themselves. However, in some situations the issue isn’t just about one person. Many lives and future are at stake. Most people think politics only has to do with our various politics parties in our countries but politics is also about the leadership in our companies and anywhere we find ourselves in where there are structures of governance put in place.

In some companies, the CEO has the most shares which means he gets to have the veto power to make huge decisions on behalf of the company when things get critical. Some companies try to play it safe by making sure two or more share holders have the same amount of shares and I think that’s a smart move. Because having only one person with that power can cost people so much.

What if that person is being influenced by others to make selfish choices. What if that person is already out to make life easier for him alone? What if that person is being blackmailed? All these count when it comes to power in an association. Sometimes it’s necessary because it helps in easy decision making but other times, it’s a whole different story.

I have been in situations where one person had the right to decide what happens about an issue and it didnt feel good because i knew this person was coming from a place of emotion and not reasoning and nothinh could be done about it. Sadly, this is the situation in most homes, communities and even institutions. I don’t think there is much the government can do about and so we have to find ways to help ourselves.

I personally think the best way around this is to have two or more people who have this veto power. At most two people should be okay because in that case, one will be able to see reason and convince the other against any bad choice. At the end of the day, what matters is making sure to having good, and competent leaders who have integrity. Because you can have more than one lease with a veto power but the situation will still be the same and you can have just one leader who can transform things for the betterment of the people.
