Blockchain and digital strategy.

You can’t have a good blockchain business model without having a good digital business strategy.

• How to outcompete rivals
• How to respond to changing economic and market conditions and capitalize on growth opportunities
• How to manage functional pieces of the business
• How to prioritize the allocation of resources to activities that will have the most impact on strategic performance
• How to improve the organization’s standing with financial markets and sustain its financial performance

This can be done proactively or reactively.

Dubai has a very strong proactive strategy for blockchain but could Ireland do something similar?

Three pillars for digital business strategy.

  • Identify specific opportunities that could use blockchain technology.
  • Build a prototype and business model for this opportunity.
  • Scale efforts to real world use.

The Dubai blockchain strategy PDF can be found here to see how they are planning to build for the future.

Dubai business blockchain strategy.

Dubai needed an agile solution to streamlining its growing Government processes. Dubai saw potential in blockchain as the solution. Blockchain is the technology that utilizes open distributed databases of transactions involving value. Its coding method allows for secure record keeping in distributed online ledgers where members share and confirm information with no central authority

Reading the Dubai case study gives us an interesting insight into what will be possible through blockchain technology going forward. They have put together their strategy in a clear and forward thinking way that lays the ground work for large scale implementation. They have very obviously identified an opportunity to advance their processes.

They have put together a plan. Built on a smaller scale while they optimize the processes with the intention to scale to other cities as they go. They see blockchain technology as the way forward in this technological age and have taken proactive steps to be ahead of the competition.

There is no reason that Ireland could not do the same.
Our government is a slow and cumbersome, legal nightmare. To move any part of it you need to fight through red tape at every step. Blockchain provides a great opportunity to optimise these processes using distributed ledger technology to sped up and reduce the cost of multiple areas. Areas such as tax, passports, voting, welfare, record keeping, ect...

As the home of 9 of the top 10 global software companies, we have the people in place that can develop these technologies to fit a suitable plan. We could easily put a plan in place with a modern city like Galway as a pilot to replace certain government services with blockchain systems that provide a trustless service for moving and storing records.

A hub could be set up and IDA funded for small blockchain start-ups to create even more solutions using blockchain technology. More ways to optimise government services and new uses cases in other industries. The world is moving onto a digital platform and it would be progressive thinking to put a 5 year plan in place to get ahead of the curve.
Create innovative solutions and to welcome new businesses that are working in this field to become a home for blockchain development. This would complement our status as the number 1 destination for US tech firms and could be scaled out across the country once it was running smoothly in one county with a hub in every county for smaller development firms.

  • Government to draw up 5 year plan.
  • Pick a test county (Galway)
  • Identify areas in government for optimisation using blockchain.
  • Contracts for replacing government services.
  • Funding for start up companies.
  • Blockchain courses in NUIG/ GMIT
  • At the end of the five years have extended plan for further rollout to other counties and keep adding new areas to optimise.

A quick overview but a process that we should already be engaging in to move Ireland into the digital age and attract the top talent for the years to come and new innovations in the field.

Incremental change happens slowly and there are many reasons why businesses won't be the first the put their head through the door.

I would suggest that one key element for an initiative like this is to identify and focus on a transformative opportunity that is not possible with current tech, this will accelerate showcasing the benefits. Something that is enabled by blockchain that is not possible without it.

What i experienced in my exploration into a blockchain business a few years ago is another challenge, people don't understand what you are doing. This affects funding, tech partner etc. So the key message here is timing is everything. If your idea is good, prepare and lie in the long grass until the right opportunity and timing are there.

Changing anything is hard but business, procedures and mindsets are some of the most difficult as they can be so entrenched. It would need to be incentivized to have and large scale effect.

Very good point and something that could be looked at for further discussion.

I would think that blockchain knowledge has increased a lot over the past few years as it has become more developed for real use cases but I know that it is still a long way off being used by the general public as the tools haven't been built yet to make it happen in the background.

Timing is everything. Hit the market at the right time and you will catch a wave or get in too early or late and it will be passed over.

I do agree that the government services would be a lot better if they made the switch, the chances of other countries following seem a bit too small for me. As much as I would like the process to be more efficient, I don't see the politicians and government cronies want that.

Of course this can change depending how other countries adopt the system though.
