Summoners are the key to winning battles.
The cards help too obviously but your summoners are the key to winning battles.
If you have the summoner to match the ruleset then it's your advantage straight away. If you don't have a summoner that influences the ruleset then you could be in trouble before you pick any cards. The biggest players in the game have huge decks spanning all of the different card series which makes it very hard to compete with them now unless you too have a wide range of options.
In the Beta days everybody was playing with the same decks and limited rulesets which made it a lot more even playing field compared to the variety of cards there is to select from now.
Take a simple ruleset like "Wands out". A ruleset where you can only use magic monsters.
You have a big selection of summoners in your deck but getting the right one is vital. The majority of these cards are great in certain battles but in a magic only battle summoners with melee or shields are worthless. It's a waste of resources and a disadvantage since your summoner gives an ability to six monsters. Or more for summoners with multiple abilities. THere is also magic only, no magic, long range only, melee only ect... The variety and combination of rulesets make it a very different game to the old days.
You pick a summoner to suit the rulesets and if you pick the right one it can enhance your team and increase their odds. For magic only in this picture you could add 1 magic to your monsters or subtract one magic from your opponent.
"Thaddius Brood" subtracts one magic and one health from your opponent so it's a great cards for this ruleset. Combine this with a magic void and silence and it's going to be very hard to inflict damage on your team.
"Owster Rotwell" gives every monster the reflect ability turning your your opponants attack back on them. This with Amplify and triage will inflict a lot of damage back on them as they try to attack hurting their team on their go.
This has become even more important since the start of Survival mode. Every time that you lose a battle, you lose that summoner for a period of time.
Monsters can be replaced but summoners are invaluable in this format. I've had to change my strategy and buy more summoners to stay competitive and win more battles.
Summoners that i never had an interest in before just to try and be competitive. I bought two last week and three more this week. THe plan going forward is to keep picking up the cheapest summoner cards that i don't already have util i can max them out and move onto the next ones. As i win more battles this will give me SPS to target the more expensive summoners.
Aquatus.
Dallan.
Immortalis.
They are not the best summoners in the game and i need a few more to max them out but what they do give me is options. Options for the different rulesets which is a huge advantage in the game. Aquatus is a funny one as i only need three more copies but there were none left on the market after i bought the other 43 cards for sale. Now the price is $1.49 since there is such a limited supply so i'll have to wait for people to put a few more up and i can max out that version soon.
I will continue to keep filling out my deck with the SPS that I am earning form survival mode and convert that into DEC and cards while they are still cheap.
More cards should translate to more wins and more rewards to keep buying up stock.
In theory anyway.
Try for yourself.
If you haven't played the game before then now is the best time to join. Today is much better than tomorrow and a lot better than later.

I've lost a lot of games to the immoratalis. Once it's wands out, I already know 50% of the opponents I'll face will come out with it, except I'm lucky the opponent doesn't have it, then that's when I know I have a chance. Summoners are key
