Book your Business Meetings in the Cemetery

Are they filming here today? I’m looking at the bank of trailers parked on the street like rectangle puffballs that popped after the rain yesterday. It’s an October Sunday. Are they shooting some crappy construct for Halloween? Please tell me they aren’t in the cemetery. I need some recharge time minus the living. Dead people in the cemetery don’t talk to me.

I scout for a film crew through the corroded black bars as I walk by the trailers. None in sight. Fabulous. Looks like things are packed up, no shoot today. I celebrate inside. Walking quickly in through the gates, I’m acutely aware of how much light I have left in which to do my own shooting.

LOSING LIGHT

Quiet leaf crunches underfoot. Only a few are walking the cemetery paths under overcast skies with the odd shot of sunlight streaking through. I wander with no particular direction, my intuition nudging me to point my camera here and there. My focus is on that until my batteries go dead. I crack open a new package and put them in. They aren’t working. I find a spot to sit and fiddle with it all. They must be dead. I have one more set. I think they’re new. They aren’t. I work with what I have left on them.

I’m almost back in the creative river flow when rain starts. I go stand on the step entrance to a mausoleum out of the wet. It’s just a shower; it won’t last. My battery isn’t recharged yet. As I watch the rain, sunlight cuts through clouds blowing golden light on sheets of raindrops. It’s one channel of light through the grey. I’m mesmerized. There’s no way to capture this with still photography. I film it with my eyes instead.

RAINDROPS

Page break.png
As my eyes wander the raindrops, I reflect on how much time I’ve spent in this cemetery over the years. I measure the amount of time I’ve spent exploring death while I’ve lived. I see that death has always been a part of my life. My father fed our family with meat that was hunted and trapped, so death was ever present. It’s a natural part of life on earth. Best to accept the inevitable and get comfortable before it calls on me, guaranteed to transpire at some unknown point.

There isn’t much access to nature in the way I’m accustomed, within this anaconda snake of a self-entitled city. The cemetery and the ravines are all I have access to. The real deal is at least a four hour drive from the city, and even then, you can still see the lights sickeningly glow at that distance.

Moments later, I hear this guy doing a face time meeting on his cell phone. When isn’t someone buried in their phone? Maybe when they’re asleep. He’s wearing shorts to his business meeting. I’m already on a direct course towards him. Turning away in another direction, I hear him speak.

“I have a notebook…(pause, shuffling noises)…I’ll write it down.”

Silence for a couple minutes.

“Okay, I wrote the measurements on a newspaper I have with me. I’ll check them when I get home.”

By this time I’m laughing to myself. I’m standing about five paces away from him. He’s completely oblivious to me. I think, why not? I take several photos of him. I might as well be invisible. This is just too funny. I’ve seen people do all kinds of things in this cemetery. A Sunday face time business meeting using a tombstone as a makeshift desk is a new one. There’s always some first. Laughter breaks through my grey clouds as I walk on, like the sunshine lighting up rain with gold light.

For those wondering why this post is muted:

galenkp chose to mute this post in retaliation, among other shady behind the scenes behaviour since I gave him the boot somewhere around two years ago. He has muted this post because I chose not to allow him to control me, give me orders, influence what I write, who to upvote, who not to upvote, whose posts to comment on, whose posts to ignore, etc.
No one controls me. I have always been and will always be captain of my own ship. Deal with it.

I'm so impressed. Seriously stunningly stupefied at your self-swear censorship. Must have been quite the trip in raindrops. 😉

I read this and then immediately launched my own business just so I could start booking meetings in the cemetery. What a great idea. Looking forward to Monday at 2pm Eastern with that new prospect.

😂 When can I book a slot and what are your rates? I need a new cemetery hang out for special business meetings with special people.

like the guy who threatened to crush my skull in three times today in under ten minutes, guess what I wasn't wearing...

Book a slot anytime you like and pay whatever you want. All I ask is you book at least a decade in advance and provide a minimum deposit of $1 million.

So did you put that guy in the ground?

🤣🤣🤣 I'll need cremation clean up services, is that possible?

Here's where I admit I can be kind of scary when provoked. I waited outside the store, 3 paces away in an alcove where I couldn't be seen. I waited for him to walk by. Made eye contact when he did. He started the skull crush threat again as he walked by. I called after him, go d** quickly, go get your s***s. He turns, comes back says, what did you say. He's standing a yard in front of me. I stared him at him with this look I have and said nothing. He started backing away and then turned and crossed the street. I called after him, Go ahead, kill me, you'll be doing me a favour. I had my hand in my vest pocket on, um, something, just in case he wanted to play. 😜

Most of the time, it only takes a look to get things to go away.

Well I have to give this person credit for originality - it's actually pretty fitting for a business meeting if you want peace and quiet.

Not really my style to be honest, I think I'd feel weird and a bit disrespectful of those slumbering, but who knows maybe this guy designs coffins and he feels that's a better place to discuss coffin measurements than a coffee shop?

I know the undertaker there and this guy wasn't designing coffins, LOL. A lot of people took to going there last year because of how the world turned. I go there for the quiet, so I can appreciate why people do. I feel the same as you in terms of it being disrespectful. Here, people do whatever they like with little consideration to others, typical of any big city. Not something I'm fond of, hence my hanging out where dead people do.

hehehehehe I just smiled from start to finish!!!
first - it's been a while since I've walked in a beautiful cemetary. on the east coast they have SO MANY, and the walkways are so pretty and kept. and I just love the peace there. maybe it feels different at night? i dont' know. but in the day, I just think of all these souls just milling about there, chatting, soaking in the sun. silly little things like that hehehe some people think its eerie to walk in a cemetary?? but I don't know.. i never have. They were just so common to see. and the architecture and flowers laid by family and how everything is kept just so... i just always loved it :)

but out here - i just don't see many. and the ones that ARE here are strange to me. Just like ... a field with these small name plates IN the ground. no headstones. no little mausoleums. no hills or walkways. its odd.

There’s no way to capture this with still photography. I film it with my eyes instead.

hmmm yes :)

very much a lot of yes to that. hehehe

loved that picture of the flower behind the rain. you really love drops! hehehehe

and i love your heart :)

LOL, I can picture you smiling.

Yes, there’s this peace and stillness in old cemeteries. I’ve been in them at night, this one only once at night. Nothing eerie or strange happened. I like studying the carvings, the history, the stories of people, and also all the things left by loved ones. There are so many interesting things. It changes all the time too.

So bizarre that it’s all name plates in the ground where you are and flat too. Is it a cost issue? Maybe those are all cremations. Strange though.

hmmm yes :)
very much a lot of yes to that. hehehe

LOLOL…you know exactly what I mean.

loved that picture of the flower behind the rain. you really love drops! hehehehe
and i love your heart :)

I do love drops, droplets of all kinds. A drop is a personal symbol to me.
All that love echoed back to you, love your heart too!

You know what that just reminded me of....when you said you study the carvings..
I have this thing with handwriting. When I get a handwritten notes from loved ones, I just let my finger trace over the graphite. And I think about how they actually touched that same paper and how handwriting is a little bit like a fingerprint. Hehehe so unique how their letters curve or spike... And maybe even a trace of perfume or cologne pressed from their wrist.

But I love how they had a thought from their head that I'm actually holding in my hands. You know?

That is SO amazing to think about.

We have this piece of paper that transfers their thought to our mind....hehehehe

I love it

I love talking about filmy threads of beauty with you, cuz you always see it and feel it ☺️

I really get where you're coming from with handwriting. You paint a picture that is so real and visceral, I could feel the graphite and paper as I read it. I like studying hand writing, all those details you mention, all those special little things.

But I love how they had a thought from their head that I'm actually holding in my hands. You know?

That is SO amazing to think about.

Yes, I do know. I think pretty much the same way. Lovely to share this with you. It is a seeing and feeling experience.

please tell me that you had backups of all your important stuff?

Slower death. I have things backed up, so I updated that, posted a new post and then it died, dead, death forever. I'm certain it's the motherboard, so repair/replace situation. I have an old computer as back up, so I fired that up but lots to do and it's a different OS, so that added more to the fun pie.

hehehehehe yes - i don't even want to think about this one dying any time before i'm ready for it to croak!

its fairly new but we know that means nothing sometimes hahahah

which reminds me to do a little backup riiiiiiiiiiiiight noooooooooow. hahahahaha

I won't tell you what's gone down with some of my computers, once a new one too, LOL, so yeah, it means nothing, nothing at all like so much smoke in the air (which is more beautiful).

Seriously though, best thing is to have a secondary computer and also back up on external hard drive. I have no faith in the cloud, since that's also in the air somewhere I don't know where but not where it should be. LOLOL

yeah - the cloud makes me nervous. i don't know why

well - scratch that, i know exactly why hahahahaha

why did i say "i don't know why" when i know exactly why!

ok i know why i said that too LOL

why does it make me nervous - cuz i don't trust anything that has all i need connected to something i can't hold or control.

why did i said "i don't know why i said that" because I didn't want to be seen as one of those people who can't trust things like the cloud. but.... i am one of those people hahahahaha and there you have it! LOLOLOLOLOLOL

I have a secondary computer - yep - but its old and jankety. hahahah but it will serve in a pinch.

AND. i have an external drive! and - i have all my keys on paper too hehehehe

Checkmark to everything you said.
We have so much in common. 😂😂😂

Anything important and/or private never enters digital. That happened when I uh, had a close call with electricity, fried a new computer and external hard drive that was connected. (I keep my back up disconnected ever since).

Hahaha! What I like best about that pumpkin, is that it was originally whole and animals ate it, digging out seeds and all, effectively carving it into what I photographed. 😂 I love stuff like that and I see you do too. Thank you and thanks for your number, I've noted it.
