Sheyane McKay's "My Show"

Jamaica is a small island in the Caribbean. 2.9 Million people. It is regarded as one of the most creative countries in the world. Yet still opportunities and exposure for filmmakers is slim. This show aims to change that. Rough around the edges and still finding its legs, "My Show" is not without its flaws.

The host, Sheyane McKay recently graduated from a mini-film programme called the UWI Community Film Project which is a programme for persons from the inner city. It's aimed at providing them with a skill they can use to earn a living. Sheyane has used her skills to create an award winning short called "Blood Walk" which I will talk about another time. This time she has created her own talk show where she wants to give Jamaican filmmakers and audio-visual creatives a platform for their work.

She has 6 episodes recorded so far. The one I have added here is her 3rd episode. I have to commend her efforts because a talk show is not easy, especially trying to contain it to 30 minutes. Again it is not without its flaws. Sound issues, camera work, set design, however, overall she does a good job and I expect her team to improve over time.

None the less the show features some great emerging talent. In this episode Director Kyle Chin and Producer Mezan Ayoka are being interviewed about their short film "Mango Wars" Starring Marlon Walker, Camille Davis, Rodney Campbell and Zbek Nelson. A comedy about a man obsessed with protecting his Mango tree from his neighbour, causing him to miss out on precious family moments. Listen to Mezan and Kyle talk about all the challenges they faced in pre-production, production and post. They talk about how they cast the actors, scouted locations and where you can find the short film "Mango Wars" online.
