An agreement - Inkwell Creative Nonfiction Prompt #30

It was a Saturday morning, and I had a hectic week prior to the weekend to the extent that I wasn't able to check my son's academic progress as usual. It's our daily routine every evening to check what was done in school and guide him with his homework or project, if any. So on that faithful morning, I took my time to cross-check in detail all they had been learned in school and his current weekend assignment. I discovered that the topics were getting harder. At one point, I thought their current scheme was higher than his age. I placed a call to his teacher, and she said that I shouldn't worry; he can do it! At this point, I thought of challenging my son with a gift, and we made an agreement.

He had wanted the kids tablet after the one he got before got spoiled. So I promised him that if he can work hard, study his subjects thoroughly throughout the term, and score A's in all his subjects, then I will buy a brand new tablet for him. He nodded in agreement, took up the challenge, and was studying harder. A lot of the time, my son will abandon his meals just to meet up with his studies. I saw the eagerness in him to score an A all through and grab a new kid's tablet. Originally, he loved to study his books all the time, but the current agreement enhanced his learning even more.

His teacher, on the other hand, was sending some educational videos through my phone, of which my son wouldn't allow me any rest until he learned all that was sent. All the effort made was to ensure a good result, as I understand. Fast forward to the exam period; he was up and doing He put his best effort into his academics. He became even more addicted to his books;, it progressed to a habit that, even now,is still part of him. He can sacrifice a good game to his academics at age 5, which is impressive anyway. After the exams, he told me confidently that he did well and was very positive about scoring all A's. In my mind, I was praying hard to have the money to get the tablet because it's an agreement lol.

The result was out, and to my greatest chagrin, he scored all A's. Wow... There is a particular subject on which he usually scores a B, and surprisingly, he had it an A as well. I congratulated him, gave him a warm hug, and he was happy. This happened this year before the Easter holiday. So my son's hope was all high, anticipating his new tablet; unfortunately, I was and have been going through a lot of financial stress since then. All I have spent on has been our important needs. I tried to explain to him what the situation was like, but as a child, he didn't understand mummy. He cried and reminded me of the agreement we had, I felt bad sincerely. I have been trying my best not to breach this agreement, but unfortunately, I failed! Until today, I found it difficult to keep to the agreement with him!

Not keeping to your own side of the agreements with kids sometimes can discourage them, for they surely will consciously put in extra effort to achieve the best and get rewarded. However, the reason for not fulfilling your part of the bargain will not digest into there cute little brain. So now prepare yourself for the the next agreement if he would comply😊

It's better to not enter into another agreement until you can fulfill this one :) ...

I hope you'd get to fulfill your part of the agreement. It's amazing to see a 5 year boy committed to his books just with that offer you added 😂, imagine he continues this way till University 😇.
It's a beautiful thing to always check your son's academics progress, I wish my parents did that for me too😊. You may want to try to prepare his favourite meal, snack or something he loves a lot, but, doesn't cost much; pending the time you're able to fulfill your agreement

It must have been disappointing for your son, although deep down I feel like you didn't expect him to get straight A's in every subject. I would have raised the money from the beginning, since children take things very seriously.

I was thinking he will at least score a B in one of the subject 😅, but hopefully he will still get the tablet soon

Hehe. Mummy mummy. We are going to understand when we grow up. But for now we need our tablet ooo. 😂 😂.
I really love the challenge he took up upon himself and I am glad he came out with flying colors. I also pray you get to have much more money to get him his gift. Because that will remain a driving force towards his academics and even gain more trust in your words.

Through perseverance, your son managed to bring up his grades, how wonderful! Hopefully the other end of the agreement finds itself resolved in the same way! This story is nice, however by adding in some of the creative elements of fiction, it would really shine! We recommend reading our article on creative non-fiction for tips on adding these details into your stories. I love how kids are always committed to performing a task when they know they have a reward waiting for them.

Hello,

Do you still remember the time of your own childhood? What was it like when adults promised you something and in return you met their expectations, but they didn't meet yours? Children are memory experts and don't forget who kept their word.
If it is your own parents who teach the child the first disappointments, this is the normal course of events because no mother and father is perfect, but from now on it might be difficult for you to keep your son motivated to be a good learner through rewards. You may no longer have an easy time getting him to believe what you promise him.
I wish you every success in regaining his trust.

Greetings.

I really understand how he feels however, there are some things we can't control but rather exercise patience till we can meet the need. I am working on regaining his trust which everything seems fine now even with his academics activities... however, I am still working on fulfilling the agreement soon
I really appreciate your nice words 👍✅
So much wisdom from you!

If he's always been respectful, it may very well be that he's simply honoring you by keeping his disappointment somewhat to himself? Him seeing that you are doing your best to get it for him is the very best medicine :) ...

I think everything seems fine between my son and I due to his innocent mind....I guess he just waved the disssapointment and moved on with his life.. nevertheless, I will still find a way of meeting up with the aggrement

Thank you so much

This is so touchy. I really pray you're able to meet up with your part of the agreement. Children are very sensitive and it'll be an encouragement for him to work harder.

Great script ma

Wow, that has to hurt :( ... it has to hurt knowing that he feels like he worked so hard for nothing 😢 Hopefully you can afford it soon 🙏 How much do they cost?

Yes...it hurts so much...I felt his pain during that period but I couldn't do anything as I have other pressing needs like food to attend to. Glad he doesn't feel bad about it anymore but I know surprising him with it would put a smile on his face.

The cost varies depending on the size and product but one can purchase one from $30 upwards

Thank you so much for the curation
Much appreciated sir👍

My mother used to do such kind of agreement with me when I was a kid also and I think all mothers do the same kind of agreement with their kids.
Whatever, it brings a good result and I think it's a good agreement.

Yea, it's a good agreement but it becomes better if mothers always fulfill such an agreement

Awww, too bad. You broke his little heart, hehehe. I know you would make it up to him once you get the chance.

On the other hand, you got to find out how determined and resilient your little boy is.

My dear...I am craving to fulfill that promise God being my helper.
And yes, I saw another version of him and the good thing is that he has continued that way in his academics since the challenge even without the gift... innocent mind
