MY FAVOURITE SUBJECT I WOULD LOVE TO TEACH

20230227_180556_0000.jpg

Teaching is one of the less-paid professions in my country; however, some people who have passion for teaching still take up the job anyways. But many people who are very good at teaching are either in another profession with a better salary or they are learning other skills. Most private schools here usually pack several subjects into one teacher, irrespective of whether the teacher is a master of the subject or not. I guess they are only running away from employing more teachers, which will incur more expenses for them, but it's never a good choice, though it happens. For government schools, they always hire subject teachers, which is good; however, the salary isn't encouraging. Teachers receive meager pay here, thereby discouraging other intending teachers from joining the profession. Only if our government can open the chapters of this noble profession and review their salary for good, will we have more teachers come on board and the issues of some lack of subject teachers will be forgotten, thus improving the quality of teaching as well.

I graduated as a dental technologist, did my internship in the military hospital in Lagos State, Nigeria, with a good pay, but during my National Youth Service Scheme (NYSC), I requested to be posted in a school; weird, right? Lol. Originally, I was posted in a hospital, but I told the hospital to reject me because I wanted to serve in a school setting because of my passion for teaching. I wanted to have a teaching experience to satisfy my love for the profession, and so I got what I wanted. Within my first month in the school setting, I started my postgraduate diploma in education (PGDE) immediately. I was combining both programs (NYSC and PGDE). The lectures for my education program were on weekends only, so I had time during the week for my students. It was a nice experience, undergoing the program and teaching at the same time.
When I was through with both programs, I applied for teaching jobs and got an offer from one private school. I expected to teach only my favorite subjects, but I was made to teach all subjects to primary 3 and 4 students. In total, I was teaching 21 subjects; such a strenuous job... it was draining. The only motivation I had to continue was the lovely and brilliant students I had. I am good in their math, civics, home economics, health science, and agriculture, but I was forced to take "all" the subjects they offer, both practicals. It was a bit challenging, stressing myself so much learning some subjects I wasn't comfortable with, but it was my fault. I went for the job due to my love for teaching, but the stress I went through with the underpaid salary made me lose interest in the job. Imagine preparing lesson plans daily for several subjects and teaching every minute from one class to another; my brain almost got burst... lol

So overall, my favorite subject that I thought them and would love to teach whenever I get the chance again is "agricultural science."

Agricultural science is the subject that deals with the growing of crops, soil science, and the rearing of animals. I believe everyone needs adequate knowledge about this subject. Imagine having practical knowledge on how to grow some crops for your family's consumption. This will be one of the things I do to ensure my students learn.

The study of agriculture will not only make one know how to grow some crops for family consumption but also how to go even into commercial farming and make money through it. Gone are those days when farming was more hectic; with the use of modern agricultural farm tools and machines, farming is now easy.

A lot of people rear animals for commercial purposes. This knowledge was made possible through the study of agriculture. Agriculture as a subject helps in providing food for the whole world, and humans cannot do without food.

While in school, I loved agriculture as a subject and would always get high marks on it. I started farming at a young age with the help of my grandmother, and to date I still own a small farm in my home.

This is a subject where, when students are properly equipped with the knowledge they need, some can become entrepreneurs after school, creating jobs for themselves. I know some graduates who own some commercial lands for farming purposes, and that's great. No one can go wrong with practicing farming because it's something that both the rich and the poor need every day.

In conclusion, agricultural science is a subject I would love to teach in order to encourage farming for both family consumption purposes and for commercial purposes.

I alwYs say that, when there is no money to encourage one, passion is what keeps them going. This is a perfect description of what being a teacher in Nigeria is all.

Growing up, I've heard people say that they don't want to be farmer because they feel that it requires putting oneself in dirt.

Even if that is the case, if everyone decides not to farm, how are we going to eat.

I love your reason.

Without more of it, everyone suffers it

Agricultural science is quite an interesting one. The practical application alone brings out the Beauty in studying it. It will be a great subject to teach the young ones for both personal and economical growth.

I been Sha no like the subject from sec. Sch. Though.

Teaching is really sweet but the way some private schools often pile up work on teachers is something else, I thought it's only in my side that one teacher can be assigned to take about three classes teaching almost all subjects not minding whether he/she is competent or not. The Stinginess of most school owner's is one reason why most people detest teaching. I also have passion for teaching but sometimes it breaks me down because of the work load. You get little pay with much work.

Agriculture is a nice subject, gone are the days when people hate farming, hunger has made everyone a farmer now. Thanks be to God technology has now made it very easy to practice agriculture, there are Machines for almost every thing man does in the farm, be it animal farming or crop farming everything is now made easy. The only challenge most people are having now is capital.

Some private schools will drain Ur blood because of the peanut they are paying
Agriculture is no longer like before yet, people find it hard to come on board

Mom, I love the word peanut. In some schools it's not even upto peanuts yet you have to use your strength like you don't value it.

Most people are Scared of the expenses and labour😂

Wow...is not easy 21 subjects😳 I can't deal with it...three is not easy because you have research daily on it. How I wish our government will ease the stress of many teachers by allowing them teach less subjects with high payment of salary. But they keep making education more tedious and stressful. You really put alot of work in your students and I never knew you were once a tutor. Nice one 👍

It's really sad when I remember teachers especially those at the primary and kindergarten level receive very small salary when ideally they should really be receiving a very tangible salary... Like, they are very very underrated.

They literally form the basis of solid foundation for us all and yet aren't appreciated.

Agriculture is really a great pick, it's actually the future hope of Nigeria and many countries as a whole

I don't know why the government has refused to see that teachers are not well appreciated. They are not just seeing this which is very vital to enhance quality teaching.
Agriculture is nice, unfortunately many people don't like it

Agriculture is actually not easy but well, truth is that none is easy😂.
And again, when someone says agriculture, what runs to people minds is all about tilling the land which is very very hard.
People aren't exploring other branches of agriculture and that is why at the mention of agriculture, everyone removes his mind.

I really hope that teachers gets appreciated in the long run because they are doing an amazing job

Nowadays, if you tell someone that he will be a teacher when he finishes school, they will want to fight with you because they see it as a curse. The reason is that teachers are underpaid, so there is this idea that teachers, especially in primary and secondary schools, are poor. So most people would not want to have that kind of occupation.

This is not meant to be so; the issue comes from the government, as the teachers who build the foundation of kids should be paid more so that they can do their jobs well. Can the government build a house with a bad foundation? No, they cannot, because the house would fall.

While I was in secondary school, agriculture was one of the subjects that I least liked. I just didn't like subjects that weren't related to calculations in general. But I know that knowledge of agriculture would help one no matter where he finds himself.

We hardly see a teacher who is doing well financially. In other countries, teachers are being paid handsomely and it will reflect in the quality of their education. Many graduates will be interested in the job , I just wonder why it's taking the government forever to realize this and attend to the teachers.

Many people do not like agriculture...lol
It's also a course with so many notes to read but I loved it both the theory and practical.

I can't forget my agricultural teacher till today, master Solomon was one of the people who made me love the subject. Unlike other teachers that taught me that subject, he usually allow us go home with a larger share of our farm produce.

You have chosen a very important subject and you will definitely be having a huge impact on many students.

Great perspective. Choosing a subject that will help raise more entrepreneurs is wise. With the economic situation of Nigeria and the poor payment of government workers, working for oneself is ideal.

I never loved agricultural science back then. I was so confused about what tuber crops are, grains, pollution, this and that😂 I felt it was all about farming and I hate farm work 😭 My parents actually farm a lot and they're always carrying me with them. I'm not particularly happy about that, it feels like what I was always running from keeps chasing me. 😂 I'm grateful for the agricultural knowledge because I know I can never be hungry. I have a wide knowledge of different aspects of agriculture. It's only a matter of time before I put my knowledge into personal practice. 🤗
