Some Steps I Take in Keeping the Oral Health of My Children in Check โœ…๐Ÿ‘Œ

Hi mom and dad of hive, happy weekend to you all. I hope that you are having a relaxing weekend wherever you are. So today, I thought of sharing with you all a few measures I take while ensuring good oral with my children.

In my part of the world, I have observed that only a few people visit the dental clinic just for oral hygiene's sake. The majority of people only visit the dental clinic when they are experiencing severe pain, like unbearable ones but hardly do we consider adopting preventive measures; simple measures that might help us not to experience some common dental aches. Even the dentist normally advises a dental visit by everyone at every 6 months interval but do we practice that? Of course, it's not common among many here in Nigeria. (I observed this throughout my practice in dental settings before taking the job of a stay-at-home mom, temporarily though๐Ÿ‘Œ)

I am not also perfect at keeping up with the 6months of dental visits but I do visit once in a while. Recently, we had a set of dental practitioners who visited our church for some dental awareness. They did a lot of campaigns by educating parents on the need to always take the oral health of their children seriously and not only visit when a dental issue arises. Of course, prevention is better than cure, and upon the visit, the dentist might discover any possible thing that might be problem and handle it beforehand. So a few days ago, I visited the dental center with my second son for oral hygiene sake, and believe me, he loved the experience and I love the professional advice from the dentist as well, even as part of a dental team, I still learn a lot from others!

The dentist advised that fluoride-free toothpaste is best for children Incase of they swallow a bit of paste during teeth brushing. Of course, I know about this and I use this fluoride-free paste for my kids below 6 years of age.

Babies too, also need good oral hygiene. Before the baby starts teething, a soft little cloth can be used in cleaning the tongue and the gum but once a tooth surfaces, I start using this finger brush to keep the tooth and subsequent teeth clean.

I do upgrade to the normal soft brush ๐Ÿชฅ after my baby is one year plus and there are a good number of teeth in his mouth.

In conclusion, both children and adult needs good oral hygiene measure, and starting early for our children remains the best practice.

Do you visit the dentist every 6 months or you are also a defaulter like me? Do you also practice twice brushing the teeth as usually instructed by the dental practitioners?

If you made it this far, thanks for reading๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿค—โค๏ธ

You are on exemplary mother!
Like you said folks only come when it is severe and that's correct but not everyone though unlike me I visit once in a while. They said prevention is better than cure so it's important one always keeps a constant check-up.

Kudos to you!

My dear, I know that some people are really trying on this but the truth is that majority don't including myself ๐Ÿ˜‚
But just like you, I try my best but not enough.
I really appreciate your royal visit ๐Ÿ˜˜๐Ÿ˜˜

Us Africans have a habit of not going to the hospital until things are almost too late or the pain is too unbearable to handle.

Sometimes, itโ€™s not peopleโ€™s faults. Sometimes people donโ€™t go to the hospital when things are early because around here, you need to look physically sick and suffering to be at the hospital. Even the health care professionals donโ€™t take you serious when you show up looking a little fine claiming to be sick.

Iโ€™ve had times where I went to the hospital because my bowels seemed to be making abnormally loud rumbles. I wasnโ€™t going to be given drugs per se. Just needed to consult a health care professional. I ended up not going because I knew Iโ€™d be told I was too knowing or something of the sort if I showed up not looking miserable and in pain. Lol.

Thereโ€™s also the fact that we sometimes just canโ€™t afford it. People struggle to eat 3 meals a day, so you can imagine the feasibility of having extra cash for dental care.

I tell you this all the time and Iโ€™ll keep saying it. Youโ€™re a great mom, Nkem. Youโ€™re really doing well for your kids. Theyโ€™re lucky to have you:)

I havenโ€™t seen the tooth paste you shared around here though. Will have to go in search for it. Is it only for kids or can be used by adults too?

Awwwwwn, my better pikin ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿค—โค๏ธ

I perfectly understand your point here, we don't normally cultivate the habit of hospital visit when things are mild and even the response we might get from the medical practitioners might be discouraging for some people though. Take a look at Saudi Arabia country, their government provided free health care of all kinds including major surgery for her masses. So even little headache, they run to the hospital, little symptoms like this, dey are already in the hospital according to my uncle who is a medical doctor and practices over there. But imagine people around us here, struggling to eat, dental care will definitely be the last thing on their mind unless they encounter severe pain. I don't blame anyone, I will blame money ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ‘

Wow, all these sweet words for a mum like me? Thank you so much my darling...I really appreciate

So sorry this reply came a bit late..I was busy offline ๐Ÿ‘

No. I have never been to the dentist. Don't judge me. I just haven't had the opportunity and I don't trust so called dentists in this town. There are many quacks! If I'd ever visit the dentist, it'll be in Abuja or Lagos. Not this place. Before someone would use hammer and nail plus aboniki balm on my teeth.

Thank you for this great campaign about our oral hygiene. I'm a great default of the six months dentists visit(planning to change)

but I took my brush twice daily very religiously.

Congrats for taking care of your son and visiting the dentist as a preventive measure, it is true that most visits are to solve problems.
