YOU CAN BE WISER THAN A SCAMMER

avatar

Being scammed is not always a good story to tell but the good thing is that we should always learn from our mistakes and be wiser. Some people are bent on hurting each other by all means in the quest to get quick money without working for it. To them, they are smart and can always find smart tricks of snatching away our hard-earned money without thank you.

Honestly, I have been contemplating if I should share my scam experience with you all because I feel so ashamed talking about it. I should have been wiser than the scammer but no, I fall into his trap. Ohh! My poor money was gone😥

image.png

HOW I WAS SCAMMED
I have a very good friend who was my childhood friend though she is much older than me we relate so closely. I got married before her and left from the village to the city in Lagos State. The lady is a very hard-working lady, she does different kinds of business just to earn and be financially independent .it's been 8 years since I got married and up till date, she is yet to marry. She has never begged me for any favor and so, this was the origin of my victim to the scammer.

image.png

Being good friends, we call each from time to time and chat on Facebook messenger. On one of those days, I didn't know her Facebook account was already hacked and so the scammer initiated a chat, as usual, I thought she was my friend chatting not knowing I was responding to the scammer. How the scammer got to know the type of all business my friend does still bewilder me. He started by asking about my children and I answered that they are fine but one was down with malaria. The scammer went further to tell me how she went to the market to sell her fried cashew nuts and stumbled upon a big quantity of corn at affordable rate but she didn't have the complete money to purchase it. She told me that she forgot her cash in the house while rushing to go make her cashew sales in the market. She went further to say that she is with the corn seller and that I should help her transfer #20,000 ($35) to the seller so that once she returns home, she will go to the P.O.S stand and transfer the money back the latest before 12noon that same day. She said I should drop my account number for an easy refund once she reaches home🤔

image.png

I have a soft heart and find it difficult sometimes to say no especially when I put my shoe on the person's leg by imagination. First, the scammer described exactly all the business my friend does, so it looks so real, secondly, my friend doesn't have a transfer app I was the one that dragged her to using an Android phone and social media instead of living in the dark. Thirdly, that was the first thing she has requested from me since I got married. You see this particular scammer, he must have been trained!!!

image.png

Hmmm, I didn't have up to 20k in my naira bank account that day. I had only 12k and I told her. So I made her to know thati can only give her 10k so she can buy any quantity her hands reach. She was happy and sent me the corn seller's account number. I quickly made the transfer and she couldn't stop thanking me and praying for God to bless me for coming through for her.

image.png

Not up to 30mins I sent that money, I saw another chat, requesting that I send her the remaining 2k left in my bank account. What!!! I made it clear to her that my son was sick and I am on my way to the pharmacy to get a malaria drug for him with the 2k. She still insisted that I send it that before an hour, she must have gotten home to refund it so I can buy the drugs..dat statement was so strange to come from my friend I know. At this point, I suspected foul play. I mean how could my good friend be more conscious of her business than the health of my son which I told her. I was so much annoyed and that was when I paused that Facebook messenger chat and decided to call her on the phone to be sure she meant what she typed.

image.png

I got a hot shock when she told me over the phone that she wasn't the one chatting with me all along and that her Facebook account was hacked! Shuuuuu!!! It was a scammer all those whiles. I remember threatening the scammer before he blocked me🤩. I was like had it been I had up to 20k that day...I would have lost up to that in the name of being kind without proper verification. NKEM, YOU SHOULD HAVE BEEN WISER THAN THIS!!! I couldn't stop blaming myself for not calling my friend on the phone first before initiating that transaction.

image.png

LESSON LEARNT !!!

I am now wiser and more alert since that day. Many of them have been coming after the first encounter but then, they have been failing, I now know their tricks.

Secondly, I dare not help anyone through an online conversation without first hearing the person's voice and it depends anyways.

I jump and pass every fishy link, don't dash me MB, or money or 300hive, I don't want. Verification of any deal is my watchword. You too can be wiser than this scammers.

Thanks for reading !!

This is my entry to the @hivelearners community contest titled SCAMMER ENCOUNTER.

The scammer seems to be quite smart and tracking you for a long time. Or perhaps he had seen your chat or extracted the information from her fb account. Or perhaps he might be an acquaintance of that lady. Whatever he may be, he played quite smart.

Your story is filled with lessons @nkemakonam89 . Unless spoken to the person directly, nothing should be transferred only after a text chat.

Oh yes my dear, is either he extracted our previous chat and acted on it or he knows my friend so well. However, my friend didn't find out who the scammer was after all her efforts. The scammer used her Facebook account to scam a lot of people and not only me. So 😭
The guy was smart indeed and I have learned my lessons too.

Thanks for your warm visit my dear👍

Facebook scams are rampant these days. I'm baffled at how the scammer knew exactly what to say to you. That's a trained criminal.

With time you got experience and it make you more wiser than before. I personally think that I don't need to be smarter than scammer, I just need to be conscious to protect myself from a scammer. But in case of Crypto I think we also should be more cautious.

It was really wrong not to have called. If your friend was really in need, I'm sure she would have given you a call but the deed has been done and you are wiser and that all that matters.

It's hilarious. Painfully hilarious.

You must have noticed that these people are finding new ways to target innocent souls and we see a lot of them even in Blockchain.

We all have to be careful. The truth is that you can't be too careful around these people, but we just have to try and be very careful

Thanks for sharing this on DreemPort. It was a funny read shaaa 😂

It's not your fault. The bond between you and your friend made you think it was real. You should have called really, but you never thought of it. Why should you be ashamed to share something like this? You didn't fuck up. You have a good heart. It's a lesson anyways.

Hmm nawa oo, I'm sorry about that ... Facebook seems to be the main headquarter of these scammers because I've heard so many similar cases as yours.
Thank God you didn't send all the money you had. Tho 10k isn't a small money, it's very annoying to lose such money to the hands of swindlers.

Verification of any deal is my watchword.

I agree with you on this, we should always verify before carrying out any online transaction.
Also, anyone in your shoes would've fallen for such scam. Sometimes we think we're wise but experience remains the best teacher. I'm glad your experience made you wiser.

Thanks for sharing this with us ma.

Omg it is funny as well as sad news that her account was hacked and on her name someone stolen your money even the money for the drugs.

Sometimes it happened with my cousin someone called him and said that I am talking your friend and I have need of money and I am talking from abroad the country. He was wise and he said you are not my friend and I know my friend as I have recently talked him. And you are a fake person so don't disturb me.

When I had Facebook my account got hacked and I never knew. Then some friends told me people were impersonating me and wanting money saying my kids and I were stranded in a foreign country. they knew I had no kids. So it happens all the time unfortunately!

You shouldn't blame yourself for failing a victim. You were ignorant of the account hijack and you were also helping a friend in need considering how far you've come together.

This Facebook hackers are desperately working looking for people to scam. My mom's account was also hacked and they started sending messages to her contacts. They even sent to me not knowing I am her daughter and it was very funny when I got a message telling me that my mother's daughter has cancer and needs money for treatment 😀😀. I was like oh you scammer, you don't wanna know what I'll do to you if I get you. Next thing I knew he blocked me..

Anyways to avoid stories like this is why most apps have 2FA, two factor authentication. This protects your account. It's like having a door and a protector behind it. They may break through the door but not the protector.

Strange...

Hard to spot spammers...

One quality I see is that they are desperate.

I almost got spammed in a Peer to peer platform... where I was told to send my BTC but received no cash...

I refused... that spammer said , its sent, it will come through...

was in a hurry, makes you nervous.

Since its BTC, I was careful, its my hard earned BTC na!!

Another spammer same platform... he took my UPI details for fund transfer, not my ID but phone number, and I received calls with links to send money clicking that link.

I told that ringer, to stop disturbing me...

Later I reliased its that person whose taken my phone number saying will transfer money through phone transfer...

I always getting spammed by fake Amazon agents, saying I won Laptop for all the purposes I did and I had to make some transaction for that rewards.

I got saved only because payment gateways were not working including my card.

And a fake fridge repair guy came and took a fridge spare part and 8000 Rs, he was fake and cheated us.

Anyway...): ...got spammed , sometimes don't...

That fake fridge guy came, because my old Dad found the number on the internet, it was not from the fridge company which was LG... the website was horrible, unprofessional, and in a hurry Dad just dailed the number since it came in google search results.

Anyway...

We went to the police, but in India, police won't care for these cases, it was waste of our energy and time.

Anyway.
