Daily Post - Gonna Get That Badge

You guys that follow me and actually read my posts know that I am working on the monthly posting badge for #HiveBuzz. As a result of this, I sometimes post things that I normally would not. In my normal posts, I attempt to keep them interesting and informative, or at least funny. While trying to earn this badge, I am finding myself covering subjects out of what I would do otherwise. Today is another one where I am going to talk about my wife's and my business, and the moves we are making on that front. Yesterday, we met with our new accountant for the first time, and it really took a lot of stress off my shoulders!

Our Old Accountant...

When we first got started, I knew we were going to need to use an accountant to help us at least get set up and running. I knew a lady that was a Certified Public Accountant, or CPA, and I reached out to her. This was my first mistake. It is almost always a bad idea to hire family and friends in a business situation, and I knew that, but I made the mistake of hiring her anyway...

How It Started...

We hired this friend of mine for thirty-two hundred dollars in the form of a retainer. That means that the work she would do for us over the course of the year would be taken out of that initial fee. Sounds great, right? Well, unless the person does not actually do the work. Which she did not. What she did do was develop a friendship with my wife, which she then used as an excuse to miss appointments for various insane reasons, such as pregnant cats, and mental family members of hers. At one point I explained to her that her failure to file our taxes was setting us back financially, and her response to me was, "Your financial problems are not my concern." That was when I fired her.

How it ended...

Because my wife had developed a friendship with this lady, she wanted to give her the benefit of the doubt, like she always does, with everyone. This led to her attempting to "make it right" after I had threatened her with a lawsuit. She actually did come to my house and work on things for a few days, because she "just couldn't work at home," but in the end, never did file taxes for us, and we had to do it ourselves, which we did incorrectly. Needless to say, all of this provided no end of stress for us, both as a business and a couple, and a horrible taste in our mouths about this whole business thing.

Personal Issues...

I am the one that administrates our business. This means that I am the one that has to deal with all the legalities of running things, insurance, proper business setup, all of that fun stuff. Just kidding, it is horrible. My wife is the "face" of our business, she deals with the customers, and honestly, does the majority of the work. A lot of our jobs, until recently, were residential cleanings where the client is in the home, and I am just, anti-social, to be honest. I go to the bigger jobs, the power washings, paintings, and drywall repairs, which recently, we have been getting a lot more of, especially after we picked up our first commercial contract. Without getting into a lot of detail, the way things were going was putting a lot of stress on our marriage. Something had to be done...

Big Check!

Because of the commercial contract we service, we get paid in large checks twice a month. Because of this we have had to adjust how we pay bills and take care of finances, and that put us on hold for a few weeks, but finally, I was able to accomplish some things that badly needed to be done. I set up an appointment with a new accountant that a woman from my church had dealt with, and one that actually had an office, and then set up quotes for Workman's Compensation Insurance. Most commercial companies will not even think about hiring a company as a vendor without them having it, and it is not cheap. Not only that, we really needed to get both done so we can hire employees and pay them by check legally, versus trying to claim people are sub-contractors when they really are not.

Moving Forward...

Hopefully, now that we are in a position to get these things done, it will relieve some stress from our marriage, which is my primary concern, but also, will allow us to grow our company, and take on more commercial contracts. We hear from customers all the time that they call cleaners, and no one shows up. I am hoping that we can corner the market in our area, and grow our company. Who knows? Maybe we can franchise and sell them to others after we have things built correctly. We are working on it...

As Always, Thank You For Reading!
