A visit to the famous Plaza del Oso, a tribute to José Antonio Páez. | Una visita a la famosa Plaza del Oso, un homenaje a José Antonio Páez.

Grato saludos tengan todos mis viajeros de todas las partes del mundo, es un placer para mí saludarlos en esta oportunidad, para compartir con ustedes una plaza bastante reconocida en mi ciudad como la plaza del oso, pero la misma rinde atributo a un prócer de la patria como lo fue José Antonio Páez.

A warm greeting to all my fellow travellers from all over the world; it is a pleasure for me to welcome you on this occasion and share with you a very well-known square in my city, known as ‘Plaza del Oso’, although it actually pays tribute to a national hero, José Antonio Páez.

La plaza José Antonio Páez se encuentra localizada, justamente en la avenida principal de bellavista, en la ciudad de Maracaibo particularmente siempre había visto esa plaza cuando venían estos carritos, pero nunca había tenido la oportunidad de bajarme y conocerla justamente está situada en la misma calle bajando hacia la famosa, esquina de la tradición ¡Pa que Luis! justamente al estar encontrada en toda la avenida puedes verla particularmente, siento que es una potencia y es bastante linda solo que en la actualidad se encuentra en total, estado de abandono muy deteriorada y se ve que el tiempo ha transcurrido y ha dejado secuelas en ella, se ve quien no se le prestan las labores de mantenimiento necesarios para su embellecimiento.

José Antonio Páez Square is situated right on Bellavista’s main avenue, in the city of Maracaibo. I’d always seen that square whenever those little carts came by, but I’d never had the chance to get out and explore it. It’s actually located on the very same street leading down towards the famous ‘Corner of Tradition’ Pa que Luis!’ Precisely because it’s right there along the whole avenue, you can see it clearly. I feel it has great potential and is quite lovely, but at the moment it’s in a state of total neglect, very run-down, and you can see that time has taken its toll on it; it’s clear that the necessary maintenance work to restore its beauty isn’t being carried out.

Tiende hacer conocida como la plaza del oso y es porque en una de sus esquinas, podemos ver en una base cuadrada hacia lo alto, un oso montado este es bastante parecido al de las empresas polar al oso polar de las botellas de cerveza, aunque particularmente ya también el oso, ha sufrido las consecuencias del ¿transcurrir del tiempo? Se conserva gran parte de esa estructura, pero ya su rostro se encuentra un poco distorsionado, y se han caído varias partes del mismo, así como también podemos ver al otro lado de la esquina, una iguana bastante grande, ya que este animal es muy característico por las altas temperaturas calientes que posee la ciudad y muchas, de ellas se mantienen en los árboles al ser un animal de sangre caliente.

It tends to be known as ‘Bear Square’, and this is because, on one of its corners, we can see a bear mounted on a square pedestal; it bears a striking resemblance to the polar bear featured on Polar beer bottles, although this particular bear, too, has suffered the effects of the passage of time. Much of the structure remains, but its face is now somewhat distorted, and several parts have fallen off. On the other side of the corner, we can also see a rather large iguana; this animal is very characteristic of the city’s high temperatures, and many of them remain in the trees as they are warm-blooded creatures.

En la plaza también posee un gran escenario donde se pueda analizar diversos tipos de eventos. Este es bastante bonito. Se puede observar que recientemente en la plaza fue pintada, ya que anteriormente estaba pintada de un color celeste y ahora la misma se encuentra pintada de blanco con amarillo pastel, atiende a ser una plaza bastante oscura donde predomina el árbol de nin qué tiende hacer una planta que ocasiona muchos daños debido a sus fuertes raíces, tiene la capacidad de romper los suelos.

The square also has a large stage where various types of events can be held. It’s quite lovely. You can see that the square has recently been repainted, as it used to be painted light blue and is now painted white with pastel yellow. It is actually quite a dark square, dominated by the nin tree, which tends to be a plant that causes a lot of damage due to its strong roots; it has the ability to break up the ground.

Bien, en esta plaza, podemos encontrar múltiples bancas y estas tienen una arquitectura bastante particular, pues asemejan cierto parecido con la de la plaza reina Guillermina, teniendo un estilo totalmente engalanado y clásico a su vez poseen muchos arbustos en donde se encuentran diferentes tipos de plantas, así como también arbustos de flores trinitarias, justamente la parte superior de la plaza y en el centro, podemos encontrar un gran pedestal elevado con bases en diversos pedestales en donde se encuentra la escultura de este prócer de la patria como lo es José Antonio Páez es conocido como "El centauro de los llanos", o el "León de Apure".

Well, in this square, there are numerous benches, and these have a rather distinctive design, as they bear a certain resemblance to those in Plaza Reina Guillermina; they feature a fully ornate and classical style, whilst also being surrounded by many shrubs containing various types of plants, as well as trinitaria flower bushes. Right at the top of the square and in the centre, there is a large, raised pedestal with bases on various plinths, upon which stands the sculpture of this national hero, José Antonio Páez, known as ‘The Centaur of the Plains’ or the ‘Lion of Apure’.

Justamente en el centro de su estatua en el pedestal, podemos encontrar ciertas reverencias, ciertas referencias en los que justamente en el centro de la estatua, podemos encontrar un pequeño poema que habla de su heroica vida, todo lo que logró este hombre en el pueblo Venezolano y el papel que tuvo como protagonista en ciertas batallas, alrededor podemos ver ciertas formas de relieve de algunas batallas de Arauca, Carabobo y Queseras, este hombre tuvo la gran capacidad de movilizar los llanos logrando así un gran papel por lo que Simón Bolivar le concedio el privilegio de ser General en jefe.

Right at the centre of the statue’s pedestal, we can see certain tributes and references; specifically, at the very centre of the statue, there is a short poem recounting his heroic life, all that this man achieved for the Venezuelan people and the leading role he played in certain battles; around it we can see relief carvings depicting some of the battles of Arauca, Carabobo and Queseras. This man had the great ability to mobilise the plains, thereby playing a major role, for which Simón Bolívar granted him the privilege of being Commander-in-Chief.

Esta plaza suele ser conocida también con otros nombres como la plaza de los agachaos, ya que antes poseía tantos árboles que quienes pasaban por el centro de la plaza debían bajar la cabeza para no sufrir las rajuños de los mismos, así como también se dice que como se encuentra cerca de la famosa y tradicional esquina de "Pa que Luis", los borrachos al pasar por estas esquinas deben bajar la cabeza, así como también puede ser debido a la ubicación que tiene la plaza, ya que esta, básicamente esta en descenso y embajada, por lo que también su nombre se puede deber a esto, sin duda alguna, esta plaza tiene un gran potencial, pero no se le da el adecuado a mantenimiento como también es posee una gran escultura arquitectura y una gran referencia a tributo a José Antonio Paez.

This square is also commonly known by other names, such as ‘Plaza de los Agachaos’, as it used to have so many trees that anyone passing through the centre of the square had to duck their head to avoid being scratched by their branches; it is also said that, as it is located near the famous and traditional ‘Pa que Luis’ corner, drunkards passing by these corners have to duck their heads; it may also be due to the square’s location, as it is essentially on a slope and at a low point, so its name may well stem from this. Without a doubt, this square has great potential, but it is not given the proper maintenance; it also boasts magnificent architectural features and stands as a significant tribute to José Antonio Páez.
