On the outskirts of the abandoned Church of San Felipe Neri. | En las afueras de la iglesia abandonada de San Felipe Neri.

Gratos saludos tengan a todos mis viajeros de todas partes del mundo, es un placer para mí saludarles y compartirle muchos más lugares de mi ciudad esta vez le mostraré la iglesia San Felipe Neri, la cual a pesar de su abandono es una joya arquitectónica de mi ciudad.

A warm greeting to all my fellow travellers from all over the world; it is a pleasure for me to greet you and share many more places in my city with you. On this occasion, I shall show you the Church of San Felipe Neri, which, despite its state of neglect, is an architectural gem of my city.

En pleno casco central de la ciudad de Maracaibo podemos encontrar justamente en el callejón de los pobres como así se dice, la iglesia de San Felipe Neri la cual fue construida justamente en el año1835 teniendo así más de 190 años la cual actualmente se encuentra en completo estado de abandono ella posee mucha historia y cierta onda mística, era propiedad de José Simón Peña, el le pidio a la señora María Josefa de la Colina, quién era la dueña de este lugar según la historia, este señor le pidió al Arquitecto Carlos que edificara el lugar el cuál se construyó en 30 años.

Right in the heart of Maracaibo’s city centre, in what is known as ‘Callejón de los Pobres’ (the alley of the poor), we find the Church of San Felipe Neri, which was built in 1835 and is therefore over 190 years old. It is currently in a state of complete neglect, yet it is steeped in history and has a certain mystical atmosphere. It was owned by José Simón Peña, who asked Mrs María Josefa de la Colina – who, according to the story, was the owner of the site – to commission the architect Carlos to build the church, a project that took 30 years to complete.

Todos los materiales con lo que fueron fabricadas la iglesia son de la más alta calidad traídos todos de Europa, este lugar ha sido cuna de vandalismo lugar también en donde habitan algunos indigentes de la calle, así como también tiende a ser botadero de basura perdiendo así completamente. Su uso de un lugar que príticamente es una joya de la historia y arquitectura.

All the materials used to build the church are of the highest quality, all sourced from Europe. This place has been the scene of vandalism and is also home to some homeless people; furthermore, it tends to be used as a rubbish dump, thus completely undermining its potential as a site that is, in essence, a jewel of history and architecture.

La arquitectura de la iglesia San Felipe Neri es netamente clásica y colonial es un patrimonio histórico del estado Zulia, justamente en la parte de adentro, a pesar de que no pude entrar a su interior, esta tiene justamente en el altar principal donde reposaba, la imagen de San Felipe Neri, que fue traído desde Jamaica en el cual, en su interior se guardaban medicinas para la primera botica de la ciudad para adornarla a las personas más marginadas, dicho lugar tiene formato de bóveda, las otras partes de el texto posee una arquitectura a dos aguas, conociendo un poco más de la historia de este lugar en 1875 hubo un terremoto bastante fuerte, que sacudió a Maracaibo y esta iglesia se vio bastante afectada sufriendo grandes daños.

The architecture of the Church of San Felipe Neri is distinctly classical and colonial; it is a historic monument in the state of Zulia. Inside although I was unable to enter the main altar once housed the statue of San Felipe Neri, which was brought from Jamaica. Inside the statue, medicines were kept for the city’s first pharmacy, intended to provide care for the most marginalised members of society. The building features a vaulted ceiling, whilst the rest of the structure has a gabled roof. To learn a little more about the history of this place: in 1875, there was a fairly strong earthquake that shook Maracaibo, and this church was severely affected, sustaining significant damage.

Al iniciado, el siglo pasado se quería recuperar este lugar que había sufrido las consecuencias del terremoto para ser convertido en un panteón regional, pero este producto no tuvo éxito luego después de muchos años fue cedido a la Universidad del Zulia y al centro Rafael Urdaneta para que este lugar se le pudieran dar otro tipo de usos, pero justamente en el año 70, el templo fue totalmente de sacar desacralizado, por lo que fue totalmente desmontado, su altar y es bastante triste que por falta de mantenimiento este templo haya quedado completamente al abandono durante el paso del tiempo sus afueras se ha dedicado al comercio informal, dónde hay bastantes ventas de ropas entre otros.

At the beginning of the last century, there were plans to restore this site which had suffered the consequences of the earthquake and turn it into a regional cemetery; however, this project was unsuccessful and, many years later, the site was handed over to the University of Zulia and the Rafael Urdaneta Centre so that it could be put to other uses, However, in 1970, the church was completely desacralised and subsequently dismantled, including its altar. It is rather sad that, due to a lack of maintenance, this church has been left completely abandoned over time; its surroundings have become a hub for informal trade, where there are numerous stalls selling clothes, amongst other things.

La cerca en su fachada externa, podemos ver la que es totalmente de metal y característica de la época totalmente clásica, se dice que hace muchos años atrás, estás instalaciones del templo, fue convertido en la primera escuela de música del estado Zulia, pero muchos de los pensamientos que se tenían para poder darle distintos usos a este templo, todos fracasaron solamente es una joya perdida, olvidada en la actualidad. Se quiere limpiar y rescatar el espacio para que vuelva a ser una iglesia y además turística, pero dudo difícilmente que esto pueda volverse a recuperar como iglesia en caso de que se recupere, debe ser utilizado para otros fines.

The fence along its outer façade which is made entirely of metal and characteristic of the classical period is said to date back many years, when these temple premises were converted into the first music school in the state of Zulia. However, many of the proposals put forward to put this temple to different uses have all failed; it is now merely a lost gem, forgotten today. There are plans to clean up and restore the space so that it can once again serve as a church and also as a tourist attraction, but I very much doubt that it can be restored to its former role as a church; even if it is restored, it should be used for other purposes.

Por último, esta iglesia arquitectónicamente neoclásica, bastante impresionante, solamente quedó vacía en el olvido, la mayoría de sus imágenes religiosas se encuentran preservadas en el museo de arte sacro arquiteocesano monseñor obispo Laso de la Vega, ubicado en una de las carreteras más antiguas de la ciudad como lo es, la calle Carabobo, ahí podemos observar algunos de estos elementos religiosos que reposaban en esta iglesia, como su cruz entre otro mientras tanto seguirá siendo un poema fantástico para mis ojos cada vez que pueda estar en sus afueras y visitarlo, muchas gracias amigos por permitirte conocer este lindo lugar de la ciudad hasta pronto, me despido hasta una próxima oportunidad.

Finally, this architecturally neoclassical church, which is quite impressive, has simply been left empty and forgotten; most of its religious images are now preserved in the Archdiocesan Museum of Sacred Art named after Monsignor Bishop Laso de la Vega, situated on one of the city’s oldest streets, Carabobo Street, where we can see some of the religious artefacts that once stood in this church, such as its cross, amongst other things.
