Visiting the Maracaibo Tram Station.

A warm greeting to all my dear travellers from all over the world; it is a pleasure for me to show you a new corner of my city on this Monday, the first day of the week.

It is precisely at the Veredad del Lago de Marracaibo – a well-known park in the city – that we can find the Maracaibo tram station. Who isn’t familiar with this Zulian mode of transport, even though it is now used solely for local tourism on the city’s historic and iconic routes? For many years during the last century, it was one of the city’s main modes of transport; indeed, during the boom in trade and the oil industry, it operated quite differently. It used to have its own specific route through Plaza Baralt, including key areas such as Avenida Veritas, amongst others; however, nowadays it only operates on routes departing from the tram station.

It is from this Central Station that the tram departs for various parts of the city along its historic route; it usually offers heritage tours and all sorts of other routes, and the fare is typically between $10, $20, depending on the route chosen. Personally, I’ve never had the pleasure of riding this iconic form of transport; I’ve only ever observed it and seen it in many places where I’ve gone out to take photographs. As it was a Sunday, this central station was completely closed, but I would have liked to have been able to go inside.

The tram will be parked entirely inside the station; I would have liked to see it from the outside. It is important to know a little about the history of this particular vehicle: it was in 1884 that it arrived in our city, and Maracaibo was the second place in the world to introduce this mode of transport, which was already in use elsewhere. Initially, it was pulled by a mule, Later, they decided to extend the route and completely change the way it was powered. Today, we have this mode of transport, which runs entirely on petrol and is used on various heritage routes for tourism.

We can see that the Central Tram Station features entirely traditional architecture, reflecting the city’s historic character, which was dominated by the Neoclassical style; hence the station’s architecture has that distinctive look, with its colourful windows; right in the centre, we can see the sign for the Central Tram Station in large golden letters. From this point, passengers pay for their tickets and are also given a brief overview and history of the place.

Furthermore, on one of its corners, there is a carved stone monument depicting Chief Mara, from whom our city, Maracaibo, takes its name. This monument is truly beautiful and impressive, and it also lends an abstract touch; art in our city manifests itself in various forms, and although it is not given the importance it deserves, it seeks to express part of our identity and our history.

Finally, it’s been a lovely walk. I’ll say goodbye for now, my dear friends from all over the world; it’s been a pleasure for me to share this place with you. See you soon.
