FIRST CAR PURCHASE

So for the past 2 weeks, I have been trying to figure out how to push through with a side hustle I want to embark on. I have been trying to acquire a vehicle for transport service (and also personal convenience). This will be my first car and I am nervous.

There is so little I know about automobiles which put me in a difficult position as I have had to listen to varying opinions on what to buy (and that is driving me crazy. pun intended).

So my initial plan was to purchase a 2006 Toyota Corolla which is the most popular car in this region, especially amongst transporters (Uber and Taxify drivers). However, the car is overpriced given the high demand for it. Currently, a foreign used 8th gen corolla goes for $4,300 (which is a couple of dollars above my budget).

After much research, I have settled for an 8th gen Honda civic, which is around the same price point as a Toyota Corolla but built better. However, Honda cars are high maintenance cars and given that this is my first car, I might not have the required knowledge to maintain the car properly.

The second problem will be my budget. So far I have $4100 for this purchase but it is going to cost me around $4600. So I am weighing my options. I need a vehicle. Aside from starting a side hustle, It will be a lot more convenient moving around, esp for my partner who has to go through the stress of commuting to work every day.

I have decided not to stress about this purchase anymore as it is affecting my creativity. I have a ton of work to do and I haven't gotten past half of it which is increasing my stress level. I hate the fact that I can be so single-minded. When I want something, it is the only thing I can think of...

I have two options: increase my budget so I can afford a foreign used car of my choice or buy a locally used car which is cheaper but also could be problematic. Also, I have had a lot of people warn me about Nigerian used cars. Honestly, I would rather just wait than buy something that will stress me.

However, the car I want to purchase is less problematic (based on the reviews I have seen), but I am not an expert in this field so I am vulnerable to varying opinions. Fortunately, I have a friend who fixes cars, so he is in the best position to advise me. He suggests I get a Nigerian used car which he will vet. This will cut down the cost of paperwork and the likes.

I do not want to exhaust all my resources on a car. I have other projects I want to focus on next year, so the quicker I am done with this whole purchase, the better for me. I am giving myself a 30days deadline to wrap this up.

What was it like purchasing your first car? Did you have cold feet? Were you on a budget? How was the whole process for you? Share with me in the comment section.

It sounds like you already know what to do, but you don't like the answer. That happens to me often. I find writing to be very useful for this, in fact. It helps me explore what I am thinking, clearing out the "noise," obsessions, and other people's ideas until I can just hear my own thoughts finally.

Currently, a foreign used 8th gen corolla goes for $4,300 (which is a couple of dollars above my budget).

That is more than my yearly/annual pension-like income, which is approximately only $3000 USD. For $4300 USD you can buy a house in some parts of my country (in Hungary).

But what is interesting is the fact that I checked the local prices of Toyota Corolla, and the average local price for this car is also around $4000 USD.

wow, that's amazing. I would have considered getting a property but I own one already

I think the extra 500 covers custom duties and other paperwork. Here we pay more for stuff.

I ve often considered this..
Getting a brand new or Nigerian used being cheaper.. And ofcourse rhe vetting helps a lot.

A well vetted Nigerian car may well suffice seeing that even the new one will be tested by out beloved Nigerian roads.

I hope you decide soon Chief.

New cars aren't also the best as they have poor resale value. a good second-hand car will meet all your needs and requirement

Lol Nigerian roads are crazy. God help me

I hope you decide soon Chief.

soon mate... soon

if this is the car you are talking about then you are on the right track. its a very strong and collable car and for note it triers don't put like the others honda cars do it more better than the corolla you are thinking of.
for me corolla is like a biscuit 😄

I would go for the Honda, petrol engine. If and when the market will literally moon I'm planning to buy a Honda Civic Type R EP3 just for fun. Highly reliable cars.

I can feel your anxiety and can empathize with your single mindedness to have this sorted out as soon as possible. It's a big decision for you and will change a lot. I'm hoping you do find a very good car that won't give you problems as you've worked really hard for this.

I have this same issue. I'm glad you finally solve it.
