THE FUTURE OF CONTENT CREATION ON HIVE

Recently, I was going through some old posts–about 8months old–for a review I am writing. Going through some of these brilliant posts and the effort put into them, I became sad. The thought that these contents are buried under thousands of other contents, never to be seen or read again triggered me.

It has been said that one of the reasons why creators come up with subpar posts is because of the hive reward system. Currently, the reward system is structured to favour new content(s). There is little or no incentive to create evergreen content because creators want to earn for their work and the only way to do so is by creating continuously, which is not necessarily a bad thing.

However, creating long-form content this way often than not affects the quality of posts churned out daily. Also, there are very few people who are willing to create content this way and still maintain a certain level of quality, either because the incentive is too low or guaranteed by the use of autovotes.

Secondly with the way the platform is structured people are most likely going to produce large volumes of subpar content(s) to stay relevant and also to earn rewards. Things would be a lot different if hive was a short-form content platform that is more suitable for this part of the reward system, however, there would be numerous cases of abuse that would be difficult to track.

Speaking of abuse, how efficient is hive’s abuse tracking system? Is it scalable? I do not think so. This is why I think in the long term, hive is most likely going to move away from being a core content-based platform or delegate that to second-layer platforms (like leofinance and proofofbrain). So I predict a future where hive (as a coin) is solely a governance coin (and not a utility token). How this will pan out, I don’t know but I think this is the inevitable future

So what’s the future of content creation on hive?

I still see a couple of second-layer platforms built on hive sticking to the initial goal for hive (which is to provide a platform for creators–a social platform). However, I think most of the attention will go into other aspects of blockchain technology (NFTs, gaming, etc) and this might positively impact the value of hive, reducing selling pressure.

The shift from content to other aspects of cryptocurrency like NFT and gaming is already happening and will take a few years to consolidate. It is most likely going to bring in more new users and investors. Thus, resources are most likely going to be channelled in that direction

I think anyone on the hive blockchain who has amassed enough hive coins ( I would say around 5,000 and above) before hive becomes solely a governance coin would be in a great position financially. So as a content creator, the best option would be to grow your hivepower or like me try to diversify and hopefully buy hive and earn while it is still very, very cheap.

Asides from finance, having a sizable amount of hive power will also come in handy when new projects are launched. We have seen over the years how having hivepower is a yardstick for airdrops and whatnot.

In conclusion, content creation is still an integral part of the hive blockchain and might remain so for a long time. However, I think at some point, there will be a shift. Currently, the number one dapp on hive is a gaming platform. We will see a lot of these gaming platforms on hive in the coming future and that might change the direction of the blockchain. What are your thoughts on this issue? Share with me in the comment section. Cheers!

I wonder if someone can devise a way to reward evergreen content. There surely must be some way to do it.

The initiative was explored in the past but it did not gain much traction. We've all been conditioned to consume content this way.

Yes in the last 10+ years we have been conditioned to consume content in small quick formats.

However search algorithms still use backlinks as a strong criteria for search ranking. So for evergreen posts some form of back linking ranking could be used to decide on rewards. Just an idea and I have no technical knowledge to show rather the idea could be used or not.

IMO if it is technically possible it should be a community style initiative similar to Pizza, Wine, and there are others. This would be yet another side crypto on Hive but also another strong community initiative too.

We are actually actively discussing this concept with respect to the VYB token and Verify Your Brain tribe.

To that end, we are considering launching a separate front-end that would be dedicated to extremely-high-quality evergreen posts -- a sort of "the best of the best, from the past" platform, where we would reward curators who identify awesome 'blasts from the past' and re-reward the authors as well.

Still very much in the brainstorming stage though.

I think that's a good idea. If well incentivized, people will not only look for evergreen content but also endeavour to create them

I also think Hive becoming a governance token is very much on the table. I’ve seen comments about this in the past as well. Front ends and other applications will be the order of the day while hive takes the back seat. It looks like something that will happen in years to come but will happen eventually.

I am doing fine, thank you. The car is costing me a lot already. Currently working on getting my papers--car documents and plate number, so I can move it over to my house.

I really hope this improves, some contents are evergreen and always worth reflecting back to.

Thank you for sharing this piece. I had planned on writing on this and perhaps submitting to the proof of blind but lol is already out, but then is more of seeking other people's opinions of which I will read down the comment box.

Now to my contribution.

The hive reward system ends after seven days. For a newbie in the hive community, He will have most of his original and thought-provoking articles during his first month in the community. Sadly, a greater percentage of these posts will receive little or no engagement. It will also be difficult for people to get across these posts because of tons of new posts.

Coming to the shift towards Gaming and NFTs. When gaming was enhanced and play to earn reward system was introduced, I sense that soon content creation may likely lose its glory. I mean, people play games, enjoy themselves and then earn rewards from it. What on earth can make them stick to content creation where they have to stress their brain to produce quality content? . Besides, having quality contents doesn't guarantee good upvote but with gaming , once you are good with strategies , you will always earn according to your input.

So, yeah content creation will surely face issues in coming years. Not for content crestors who are passionate about creating contents, caring less for rewards but for those who are Keen on generating reward from contents.

What could be the best strategy ?
I think if content creators can channel their energy towards understanding gaming and writing contents on them , they will survive the impact of gaming and NFT on content creation.

sorry for the late reply, i am really swamped this period (bear with me).

You mentioned something I think is quite significant regarding the difference between content creation and gaming, that is with gaming people have some level of certainty when it comes to rewards but the same cannot be said about content creation. That is spot on! and with the whole NFT craze, it is no brainer why many are gravitating towards gaming

true that. there is no harm in diversifying. I have tried gaming but have a lot on my plate now to continue.
