Sour Vegetable Soup with Star Fruit

Belimbing Wuluh is a home-cooked dish with an authentic flavor. The distinctive sour belimbing wuluh makes the dish more special when cooked with various vegetables. A bowl of this asem vegetable soup is a common vegan dish enjoyed with warm white rice by people in regions like ours. This soup is usually served at lunchtime with family.

This recipe is inspired by a family recipe; my older sister often makes this broth. She uses the star fruit from my yard in this soup. It is then made into a delicious sayur asem (star fruit vegetable soup) served in a bowl when dining with family. My family and I are very familiar with this kind of dish. In my opinion, star fruit has the perfect level of acidity, which is quite similar to a tomato. However, the sourness of star fruit is more pronounced than that of a tomato, which makes it incredibly delicious when cooked in a soup like this.




Ingredients Needed

1 cucumber
30 grams bean sprouts
3 long beans
8 small star fruit
6 red chili peppers
3 shallots
1 clove garlic
¼ teaspoon salt
3 small hot chili peppers




Preparation Procedure


Prepare all the vegetables, cutting them to your liking. For the cucumber, don't forget to remove the seeds first.

I slice the star fruit into several thin pieces. Then, chop the shallots and also the red and green chilies.

Next, boil the long beans and the star fruit, then add the chilies and shallots.

Then add the cucumber and bean sprouts, and cook until all the vegetables are tender.

Finally, season with salt and a little mushroom broth. Don't forget to adjust the seasoning, then wait until it comes to a boil.

My tip is to cook the vegetables until they're just tender; this way, you can still feel their crunch and enjoy their unique flavor. The broth's natural sour, savory, and sweet taste from the fresh vegetables makes it even more delicious. At first glance, this tamarind sour vegetable dish seems very simple, but in my opinion, its taste is truly spectacular.

I would love to try this so much. The sour fruits in combination with the spice and savouriness in indeed very tempting. I have never seen these fruits. What we call star fruits looks different, but they are sour.
