A New Pond Installed at the Botanic Gardens - Palos Verdes, CA

avatar

After several months closed

We've been going to the Botanic Gardens near where we live for years and have posted about it often. However, one section of our regular walking path had been closed off for quite some time as they were reimagining the layout of the area.

For quite a while now, there has been a large fence that with a fabric over it that you couldn't really see through without lifting up the little ripped flaps that were on it presumably to keep the wind from building up pressure on the material. What I could see when peeping through was a very large pile of dirt and tire tracks going around the hill.

We really couldn't tell what it was that they had in mind. @little-ricky was actually quite upset, because this was his favorite area before they decided to tear it all up. There used to be a little bridge with a stream running under it, and a turtle that hung out around the water. There were several other features that he liked as well, but to be fair it was all looking a bit dated and needed to be cleaned up.

The new pond with water circulating through

Finally, we showed up for our walk and found that the project had been completed! Before it was sort of a maze of bushes with a small water feature in the middle. Now, there is a good sized pond with several comfortable sitting areas surrounding it. This is actually quite nice, because it can often be hard finding a spot out of the sun to relax for a bit.

Ricky was quite happy to see that there was still moving water, because he was concerned that the 'water was gone' as he puts it. I'm not sure what they did with the turtle, though. He is nowhere to be seen! Unless you count the new fake turtle in the image below.

The new cement turtle is cool and all. But we want our buddy back!

The hard part is keeping my son off of the rocks. One of his favorite things to do pretty much everywhere we go is walk the perimeter of things. But only when the surface is uneven and somewhat challenging.

I didn't particularly want him walking on the rocks because a lot of the plants are new, and I didn't want him stepping on them. Not to mention all of the signs asking visitors to kindly stay on the path. He is getting a lot better at keeping his balance, so it turned out to be not much of an issue.

Practicing his balancing skills!

The new pond also had a nice little waterfall at the top. The water stays nice and clean as they continually recycle it through. They have also introduced a few fish which is a nice touch. I wonder what else they will do with this area? One of the nice things about the South Coast Botanic Garden is that it is very well maintained and constantly refreshed with new exhibits and plant life.

Waterfall at the top of the pond

The bird houses they go with the Trolls exhibit are still dotted all around the path. We had a few good rainfall days which got the dirt kicked up and everything is still a bit nasty. But we really needed the rain. It also shows you how much dust and grime builds up on things when you see how the water gathers it all together.

In fact, here in LA your car often looks worse after it rains than before! That was a shock to see for me after growing up on the more eastern side of the country.

The bird houses have gotten a bit dirty after the storm

Ultimately, I really like the changes that were made pond area at the Botanic Gardens. With the new seating area and more elaborate water features it is a much nicer place to stop and have a chat or even eat some lunch. Before there was only one bench in this area and it was in direct sunlight.

I'm done walking, daddy.

I really did like the little bridge that was there before, but really anything that was lost from the old setup is well made up for with the new arrangement. Particularly the covered seating areas. I am looking forward to seeing what they do next!

Please consider voting for me as a Hive witness if you have any unused votes. With the edition of the backup server, I really could use moving up a few slots in ranking to cover costs.

Thanks! We love this place. Living in Los Angeles, you really enjoy any little bit of nature that you can get.

That's a nice change they made there! I'm glad little Ricky was happy with it, he's such a cute kid! One of the nice things about southern Cali is the weather, but you're right when it rains you have to wash your car... Small sacrifices.

How's the new server holding up?

How's the new server holding up?

Really well! It hasn't gone down a single time. The only hiccup was the price feed application hung and crashed at one point. But that's not such a big deal as I can quickly restart it. Missing blocks is no fun though! Now if I could just get some more votes... I've completely stagnated this last month and a half!

@little-ricky became very happy after visiting the botanic gardens and discovered that there was a lot of improvement and it became more comfortable. @little-ricky is also cleaver to make his way out walking on the rock and not stepping on the new plant. It would have been more fun if @little-ricky could still find the turtle. Nice pictures you have.

It was a bit challenging keeping him from stepping on the plants, but after a while he got better at it. One problem I have with him at the gardens is the fact that he constantly tries to rip the flowers off because they are so attractive. Every time I turn around he has one in his little hands!

The concrete turtle looks fun but in a pond there should be a real turtle 😅, I hope they bring it back, however the new design of the area looks great always nice to have some shade to sit in after a long walk

Yeah, it was a bit weird that they put the fake turtle there. To the average person it probably seemed just fine, but for regulars it was weird because we know that the real turtle never left the original pond! I hope it didn't die!

That is really cool. We have a garden area near where I live and it has been pretty much the same for as long as I can remember. They do a good job of keeping it up though, so I can't really complain.

Yeah, as long as they keep it up that's pretty cool. The saddest thing I've seen like this was when we went on a cruise some years ago to one of the Caribbean islands. We got on a bus and went to a huge botanic garden, but when we got there it was totally abandoned and overgrown. There were homeless people there selling fake tickets for entry. Apparently a hurricane had destroyed it a couple of years back and there was no money to restore it.

Oh wow, that sucks. You would think the tour company might have updated their database to reflect that! It's gotta be hard down there with all the extreme weather they get. Especially lately!

See you!

Yeah, we do this walk so often that it's nice when they change things up a bit. Unfortunately some things take longer than others. For instance, there is a 'lake' in the middle of the garden that has been a dry field for years now. It was supposed to be finished already. Really looking forward to that one!

Such places are heaven for children and they are more than happy to visit such watery and rocky places like your child is having.

I try to allow him to experience as much nature as possible which can be difficult where we live. I grew up around a lot of wooded areas which is very different than where I live now!

I hope to find photos of the Montreal Botanical Garden I visited in summer 2008. I thought I had it on Flickr, but no - now I need to dig through my stacks on the hard drives and hope they are not lost!
But there are some super photos on Tripadvisor: https://www.tripadvisor.at/Attraction_Review-g155032-d240016-Reviews-Montreal_Botanical_Garden-Montreal_Quebec.html

Oh wow! That is quite a grandiose garden. Looks like the queen lives there. Er... the King now, I suppose!

Yeah, you should get those hard drives backed up somewhere. I hate it when I lose irreplaceable photos and such.

Found it ..... it was on a automatic backup on my external hard drive, but sort of hidden. I will have to get through those pics, we were there for 8 days and shooting like crazy. I try to stay focused tomorrow and get at least a few of the best shot in.
