An Accidental Trip to Mount Rushmore (And a Crazy Motorcycle Rally)

avatar

In Ancient Times....

Back in 2006, @afturner and I met in Gainesville Florida where she was recording an album at a studio owned a guy named Lawrence, who my neighbor happened to work for. It's a very long story, that one day I may tell, but suffice it to say that her guitarist was my roommate and one thing led to another, as it does.

As with all good love stories, She had to leave and go back to Los Angeles, and I decided to leave my job and home in Florida to go with her to a completely unknown town. But let's just say we decided to take the scenic route to southern California from Florida. And by scenic, I mean the longest route possible!

A photo I took from the same spot everyone else takes them from.

We drove straight up through Georgia, to Kentucky. Then through Ohio and all the way up to Minnesota. We went to Wisconsin and all the way west across the country. We actually didn't really have any specific goal in mind of where we wanted to visit, we just kept driving with the intention of eventually ending up in Los Angeles. Needless to say, the trip ended up taking a few weeks!

At some point we ended up in South Dakota and it was getting super dark. Me being an idiot, I had no idea that this was where Mount Rushmore was located. It just so happened that we stopped at a hotel for the night very close to the famous exhibit.

The best closeups I could get with my early 2000s era digital camera

The hotel was in a town called Sturgis, which I also knew nothing about. But I was about to learn a lot about Sturgis, because we were rudely awakened at the crack of drawn by the noise of what sounded like 1000 engines revving up. Thinking to myself, WTF is going on, I opened the balcony and stepped outside to the largest group of senior citizens with giant bellies I have ever seen. And all of them were on their own motorcycle.

It turned out that by blind luck we arrived on the very morning that the biggest gathering of bikers in the world began. It is called the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, which many of you keen readers probably already know about. Being a computer nerd, I had no idea that this was even a thing. Sadly I didn't point my camera at any of it, because I was too busy in awe of just how many motorcycles I was seeing. Especially since I had no idea that it was even happening.

Once we got up and dressed, we went outside and walked into the office of the hotel. We asked the owner, "Is there anything to see around here?"

This was of course a hilarious question to her. She kind of looked at us weirdly and asked us if we had any idea of where we were at. Of course we didn't, so she proceeded to tell us about Mount Rushmore not too far away. We shrugged our shoulders, and headed on down!

When we met, we kind of bonded over our love for the movie "Team America, World Police". Before we went on our trip, we must have watched it 20 times. That made it even more funny when we ended up accidentally at Mount Rushmore, where if you watched the movie you'd know that the Team America base is located inside of the mountain.

We kept reenacting scenes from the movie pretty much where you see Amanda standing in the photo. Of course no one had any idea what we were doing and were giving us really funny looks. Us, of course, in our new relationship just found everything hilarious and were just having a blast.

Geez.. I looked like such a punk back then.

I'd have to say that this 3 week trip across the country was probably in my top 5 experiences of my life. I am sure that the new love had a hell of a lot to do with it, but it was also the spontaneity of how we were behaving as young silly kids just doing whatever the hell we felt like. It's funny how freedom has so little to do with the actual content of your experience, but everything to do with how you perceive yourself. Happiness is absolutely a state of mind!

Now I just need to let go of all the baggage that I've built up over the years and just be again. Wouldn't that be something?

I'm actually surprised you were able to get a hotel room if the rally was going on or just starting. That's some impressive luck! I went to the HOG rally here in Michigan one time. It was definitely and interesting experience. It was a lot of fun though. This sounds like it was an awesome trip!

I vaguely remember that the night we arrived they said they had one room after a late night cancelation. We actually arrived at about 1 in the morning. I think it was just a huge stroke of luck.

Yeah, even though we weren't expecting the rally, it was super cool watching the 100s of bikes go by, and everyone sitting around hanging out with all their gear. You could tell everyone was having a blast!

Wow, that does sound like a huge stroke of luck! It's great that you have this awesome memory! Plus some pictures to boot! I wish smartphones would have been around in my young adult years. I have some cool memories but didn't have a camera with me at the time.

Oh, I know... I have such a hard time remembering the 80s and 90s. More photos would have made a huge difference! Once in a while someone will show me a picture of myself in some situation from back in those days that I've never seen. Then the memories pour back in that I probably never would have thought of for the rest of my life! Pictures are so good for that.

For sure! I had a nice camera, so I am not sure why I didn't carry it around more. I am guessing it all had to do with portability.

Yeah, I lived with my aunt for a whole when I was a kid and they had a really bad ass expensive video camera. She let me use it whenever I wanted, but to be honest, who wanted to carry that big thing around.

I totally hear you. My dad did some production work for the auto planet he worked in. They found out he was a photographer and they pulled him off a machine and put him in charge of making training videos. He had all the fancy stuff, so when it came time to buy stuff for home he had high end tastes 😃. It's amazing how much technology has advanced.

What a beautiful love story you lived, it was a very nice beginning, no wonder why you fell in love together.

You really had a good adventure on that trip, going without plans, schedules or any ideas of what could come made it more exciting and more libertine for you, who were really more focused on your love.

Honestly I prefer to do all vacations without doing much planning. I like to see how I feel each day and do whatever comes to mind. It is much more relaxing that way!

Great story - I enjoyed reading it. I've always wanted to go there, and also love Team America (F*ck yeah) ! I have to say that film was the funniest thing I've ever seen in a cinema. I'm pretty sure that its the only time I've seen a film in a cinema where there was atleast one person laughing at any given time throughout the entire film !

Me and my little brother went to the movie in the theater as well.. My bro was laughing so hard when "Freedom isn't Free" started playing that he fell into the aisle. I think the other movie watchers were laughing at him even harder than the movie! Good stuff...

It's funny how freedom has so little to do with the actual content of your experience, but everything to do with how you perceive yourself. Happiness is absolutely a state of mind!

Happiness is truly a state of mind and doesn't have to do with what one has acquired for a period of time, If one chooses to be happy, one will remain happy.

I really do enjoy reading your post. Well done @nuthman

Thanks! I was just thinking about how happiness is kind of the default state of humans. Over time we build up conditioning such as opinions and concepts of good and bad which create a thick filter on top of the happiness. So if that is truly the case, then the solution is to scrape off those layers leaving the juicy delicious happiness exposed. Lol! Sounds very Buddhist to me.

This is a fact.

Over time we build up conditioning such as opinions and concepts of good and bad which create a thick filter on top of happiness. So if that is truly the case, then the solution is to scrape off those layers leaving the juicy delicious happiness exposed.

And this is what makes people unhappy the opinions and concepts of good and bad which have been built over time. We need to create this definition of happiness ourselves Nd just be happy.

Yep, accepting what is and understanding that happiness does not exist in the future, or has disappeared into the past; but quite literally can only exist in this very moment.

Awesomeness!! 😆😆... Gosh, I would love to accidentally visit a historical place too so I can have the receptionist look at me weirdly when i start asking questions.

Amazing pictures by the way☺☺☺.

Thanks, yeah it was pretty funny once we realized where we were. It is like going to McDonald's and asking if anyone knows where I can buy a burger!

I don't know why I was more surprised, if because of the beautiful love movie they lived when they met or because of how you write and tell everything in a way that is so easy for the reader to imagine.

I would like to learn to write like this, so specific, writing down every detail, I have a lot to learn but your post opened up a world of possibilities for me.

thank you

Thanks for your kind comments! I don't know if it is quite as well written as you describe, but I appreciate it nonetheless. I use this blog to try to improve on my self expression and perhaps in the end make myself a bit more articulate with practice. Thanks for reading!
